If its 3d/wireframe then agreed the extra Mhz give a smoother game.

I must admit the colour clash was a very annoying feature on the speccy, but it still had some cracking games - I suppose most of them were available on the C64 too, but speccy could load them faster on its microdrive

Ah, those were the days

C64's 1541 Disk Drive + any fastload cartridge (Action Replay?) 5 second load time

Writing games for the C64 was the most fun

started off with a Vic 20, then a Speccy, then Amstrad 128, but eventually bought a second hand C64. Should have had one from the start!

Way of the Exploding fist on the C64 was just superb (played the emu version the other day on my pc). The c64 was way ahead and pretty much all the games were released on both formats.

Then came the Atari ST and Amiga - never could afford either

So for me C64 every time

The Dizzy series was a classic! Dizzy 1 was only ever available on the Speccy, C64 and Amstad too I think!

Many a happy hour playing those on my Speccy 48k! Never had a 128k one as I moved on to an Amiga 500 - which brought on a whole new debat vs the ST! Amiga or ST actually defined who your friends were in school!

As you can tell I'm a huge Spectrum fan - having had one of the original brown box versions from '82. Fave games included 4D Timegate, Manic Miner, Jetpac, The Hobbit, Penetrator.

Only the "posh" kids had the C64, although I eventually bought myself one - used to review games for Prestel as a 12 year old for the princely sum of £25 a pop. Didn't take long to save up for the C64 ;-)

The C64 was a really party machine - used to have 5 of my mates over during the weekend and hammer summer games, winter games, pitstop II, racing destruction set, exploding fist, etc...

C64

I did have the misfortune of aowning a c16 plus 4 before that though, had about as much support for it as XP x64

Started off with a VIC20 when I was 11, blue meanies anyone?. Then entered a Smith's crips raffle at the local Supermarket. 1st prize was a 48K spectrum, and runners up got a 16K Spectrum. Ended up winning a 16K spectrum. Then the upgrades began To get it up to a 48K model got a 32K RAM Pack. To plug in the joysticks got a 2x Kempston joystick port add-on, and to top it off a Sinclair/Texas Thermal printer. Only problem is sticking all of those add-ons into the back of a speccy is that I blew the CPU a couple of times. May still have the Joystick add-on somewhere. And still have the VIC20 but the RF modulator is knackered

Yes I remember that game. A mate of mine had it. Seem to recall they made funny grunt noises. The first SIM game as I recall. Unfortunately I don't recall the Spectrum having it.

Spectrum!!!

Although I did go to the Amiga when I eventually "upgraded". Re: Amiga vs. ST - you did always have those kids who had Acorn Archimedes and ranted on about them having "RISC" architecture.. when we knew the truth was that their parents were teachers and got massive discounts on them

There are some good remakes around of some of the classics too:

Retro Remakes Showcase
Retrospec - Retrogaming at its best
YS3 - It’s not that bad, really. » Target; 2006

Anyone know any other good sites?

sorry guys but the BBC micro was the best all rounder.

The BBC's pascalised BASIC was an excellent programming jump off. and the 6502 cpu was a joy to code with too.

It started me off into the world of assembler on 6502, Z80, 68000 and IBM ES9000

And we got Elite first

what is it with commodores and duff RF modulators?

Yes, indeed it was.

Infact I did that for a living for 4 years with a local company.
We used to do arcade conversions for Ocean & US Gold.

I was waiting for someone else to mention M.U.L.E - what a game! Used to have my mates round and we'd play Exploding Fist, Impossible Mission ("Stay a while, stay for ever.....") and MULE. I'm sure I even dug out a C64 emu a while ago just to have another thrash at MULE - the music was great!

So, after going through:

- ZX80 (original 1K and with a 4K ram-pack). Anyone else remember the cold carton trick to stop these 'yoghurt pot' machines from overheating?

- ZX81 (original and then with a 16K wobbly ram-back). QS Defender amazed me, as the screen stayed on all the time and it was quick!

- Spectrum 16K and 48K - some classics, but it wasn't designed for games, it just became a games machine!

- Commodore 64 - which WAS designed as a games machine, right down to the SID sound chip and the SPRITE capability. 1541 with turbo interface made a very good machine. I wrote quite a few games for the 64, and wrote and sold a great many "Rip Off" and "Tape to Disk" utilities for them, to allow game backup to tape or disk.

- Then it was down the slippery PC slope... to having a small room full of the damn things today!

So - when it came to Speccy vs C64, I "upgraded" to get a C64 - so it's an obvious winner. Speccy had some good games, but they were highly playable rather than technically superior... fudged noise from the speaker rather than full blown multi-voice sound on the 64, bitmapped objects where the colours bled (due to the way the colour was handled on screeen) rather than independant sprites on the 64.

May just have a dig around (quite apt really) for M.U.L.E again now... Haha! This is awesome, Atari version online here: Atari MULE Online!

like the C64, THAT was a dedicated games computer!

your parents were obviously loaded!

Incidentally, if anyone's after a PERFECT spectrum emulator, I'd recommend SPECTACULATOR, its superb. Some things ARE worth paying for.

Atari ST was the mutts. Much better than the Amiga. No RF problems for a start (built in not hanging out the back) Easy upgrades to memory, built in desktop system (not disc based) and way better sound.

Really should have done better. I did have all the Dizzy games though!

Still, i moved from an amstrad so it was a real joy. Mates all had Spectrum 48s, spent hours on them!

5t.

I had an Atari 400, then 800XL, then 130XE and all the time I felt like a Tory voter in Scotland compared with my friends who had more popular models, great computer though, and some amazing stuff you could do with the graphics hardware re programming. The interpreted BASIC was slow though, but the joystick ports were fun for controlling technical Lego!

I enjoyed BBC Basic with the in line 6502 you could do and the graphics resolutions/colours were good, but it just didn't scroll and do sprites like the C64/Atari.

Amiga was great too.

I've had a renaissance at programming the last few years as a hobbyist. The Atmel AVR are like a computer on a chip and good for fiddling in car apps. My latest is the 32 bit Renesas SH2 in the Evo/Subaru CPUs which I write custom stuff for in assembly (same CPU as the Sega Dreamcast). I've also been learning .net and visual studio and that has been good fun getting my own stuff running on the PC and especially Pocket PC for car logging etc.
