I remember some magic nights with my mates playing those. One friend was a renowned Atari joystick killer on Summer Games.

A mate of mine at the time was lucky enough to own a 1541 Disk drive with his C64, whilst I was still scrimping and saving for a microdrive for my Speccy. Back then game loads on the disk drive was the bees knees over tape drive. Seem to recall a lot of 5 1/4" floppy disk games were mostly Microprose flight sims.

And of course you always had the options of cartridges as well with the C64, remember international soccer?

I had a spectrum and my mate had the C64. Internationsl Soccer was one of our favs. The ball was a + iirc. You could score everytime by shooting directly upwards at the correct angle right, keeper couldn't work it out.

Match Day for the Speccy anyone?

C64 - Brian Cloughs Football Manger. We must have spent days on this, cross between a board game and computer game. The 'your entire squad has been killed in a airplane crash' was a bit harsh though

I take it cartridges for the C64 didn't catch on then? Wasn't the cartridge slot smaller than the VIC-20's?

Yes they were about half the width of the old vic20 'book' cartridges I used to have more carts for more vic than the c64, you're right they never really took off. Used to have all the scott adams text adventures on cart for the vic and they were damn tricky at the time!

My favourite football game, until Kick Off came along many years later!

Andrew Spencer, the programmer, also wrote International Basketball didn't he ?

It was ... one of the first games that Activision wrote (by David Crane).

Just call me 'sad'...

Did the C64 have any RAM expansion packs like the VIC-20 had?

Just came across this (which is brilliant):

YouTube - Commodore c64 orchestra plays Monty o/t Run by Rob Hubbard

I thought Rob Hubbard was a music genius back when I had my C64.

Yep he was the talk of the playground when at school. One of the issues we speccy owners had was the lack of clarity in our sound on games

Any one rember 'Ghostbusters'? Or as speccy owners whould hear through the speccy speaker 'Ghoshtbushters'

LOL - just re-reading this thread and picked up yours Steve...

I also wrote games for the C64, 6502 stuff etc. and then did a similar thing. Went on to write RPG and COBOL for large companies.

Back in the C64 days I used to calculate how much, per byte, I sold software for. My record was a program that copied games, that auto-loaded and resided in the top part of the C64 256 byte stack. It was around 113 bytes long and copied games... whilst I won't say how much I sold it for, it was by far the best pound per byte deal I ever did, and ever have done!

Quick test Steve, just for a laugh (as I still have an 'RPG Debugging Template' lodged somewhere in my brain) RPG... can you still recall the column positions for greater than, less than, equal to within the "Calculation Specification"??? (That must sound like complete codswallop to a C++ or Java dev)... LOL

Those were the days.... anyone that hasn't dropped a tray of 80 column punch cards hasn't lived!

Yep it was a bit on the hard side. My problem at the time was stopping my speccy from resetting itself due to the amount of add-ons I had plugged into the back

To be honest, I hated RPG with passion. Blo*dy cycle that you had to indicate out your code if you didn't want it to execute drove me insane. Great for reports (hence its name of course) but complex insurance systems no no no. So as soon as I thankfully left that job RPG dropped out of my head ...

And these days I don't program at all, just the occasional website in ASP for some spare cash.

Didn't the Hobbit make it's first appearance on the Speccy?
