A mate of mine at the time was lucky enough to own a 1541 Disk drive with his C64, whilst I was still scrimping and saving for a microdrive for my Speccy. Back then game loads on the disk drive was the bees knees over tape drive. Seem to recall a lot of 5 1/4" floppy disk games were mostly Microprose flight sims.

Match Day for the Speccy anyone?
C64 - Brian Cloughs Football Manger. We must have spent days on this, cross between a board game and computer game. The 'your entire squad has been killed in a airplane crash' was a bit harsh though

Yes they were about half the width of the old vic20 'book' cartridges
I used to have more carts for more vic than the c64, you're right they never really took off. Used to have all the scott adams text adventures on cart for the vic and they were damn tricky at the time!

Just came across this (which is brilliant):
YouTube - Commodore c64 orchestra plays Monty o/t Run by Rob Hubbard
I thought Rob Hubbard was a music genius back when I had my C64.

The Atari wasn't too bad to program, I got some contract work converting games to it and some of them were even published. I remember reading 'De Re Atari' quite a lot!
Then I discovered that games programming was hard, all the math and collision detection ... and I could get paid more writing Cobol or RPG for companies.

I also wrote games for the C64, 6502 stuff etc. and then did a similar thing. Went on to write RPG and COBOL for large companies.
Back in the C64 days I used to calculate how much, per byte, I sold software for. My record was a program that copied games, that auto-loaded and resided in the top part of the C64 256 byte stack. It was around 113 bytes long and copied games... whilst I won't say how much I sold it for, it was by far the best pound per byte deal I ever did, and ever have done!
Quick test Steve, just for a laugh (as I still have an 'RPG Debugging Template' lodged somewhere in my brain) RPG... can you still recall the column positions for greater than, less than, equal to within the "Calculation Specification"??? (That must sound like complete codswallop to a C++ or Java dev)... LOL
Those were the days.... anyone that hasn't dropped a tray of 80 column punch cards hasn't lived!

And these days I don't program at all, just the occasional website in ASP for some spare cash.
