Well I have just spoken to the consultant, and following the operation mum is officially cancer free in the right side now. During the op he changed the plan a little in her favour and whipped the whole lot out. Biopsy shows a positive result.

She is of course left with the left side which is unfortunately the side that not much can be done with at this point. However this is great news, and once all healed she can enjoy comfort and life a little.

Cheers Les, she is feel quite poorly right now but hopefully when that passes she will perk up a bit.
Sister in the meantime has agreed to come around each day to check in on mum. However since I mentioned not coming round with the whole family and wearing mum out, she has not replied. So she is either ignoring that comment or offended by it. Either way im sure she will pay no attention to my request.

Thank you all, I thougt it only fair to share the good news to balance the constant flow of depressing news I post.
She is feeling rough still today, hardly seen her today, but with the set up in the front room she is self sufficient in there.
Back to the hospital tomorrow, and if she is still rough I will get her check out.

Cheers Lee, indeed never say never. Not written the old girl off yet lol

lol Les you cynic!
Took mum for a drain today, they are happy that all is well with the wound but she is still very weak. Possibly due to the recovery process, but best to keep an eye on her for the time being.
Back for another wound drain on Tuesday. No fresh blood in it, so no problems there.

Annnnd another update.
Just got to work after a long morning at the hospital.
Routine appointment to see the care nurse to drain the op site. However as mum went in I had a quick word with the nurse stating my concerns about mums current physical state. Very tired, drained, not eating and VERY wobbly.
She said she would get some bloods run and get the consultant in to see mum during the drain.
30 mins later I was called in by the nurse to explain what has been decided.
They are not happy at the rate the op site has been draining, and that it is on going. So to save any issues they have decided that they are going to operate again, clean the site up properly, and put a drain in (hopefully she wont pull this one out), and keep her in til its all done and drained this time around.
She is suprisingly happy about this, and has come home feeling positive. She has antibiotics for now, a whopping 16 tablets a day lol. Took her to M&S to get some nice food that she will actually eat, just to make sure she has some kind of intake.

So, just waiting on a call over the next few days to confirm the appointment, and give me the details on when, where and what time. The consultant said he is going to apply for an extension in theatre to fit her in his schedule. Hopefully its granted. He said he wants it done asap, so its a priority to him.

Sorry about the complications Snazy, hope it all goes well this time and It is very good that your mum has a good attitude towards it all.

At the risk of embarrassing you, you are the epitome of a very good son.

Cheers mate, but in my opinion pretty far from it really. None the less much improved to what I was a few years ago lol.

Main thing is they are being proactive about it. Its a routine follow up op at this point. Spoke to admissions this morning who said they will confirm asap.

Got a text from my sister this afternoon when I went to work to say she was round at mums and she looked really ill.
I asked her to call the doctor and tell me what was wrong. In fact mum was as bad as she has been for a week, its just the fact that she sees her so infrequently. So panic for nothing there.

Hopefully the hospital will call back tomorrow to confirm. Only bit that makes me feel slightly bad is if the consultant does not get his requested extension in surgery, someone may get bumped so that they can do this for mum. (if thats the case, im sorry to whoever that is)

She is really tired now, just like she was with the bleed she had a few months back, so its pointing to something like that. Just wish she would get some more food down her neck. She just buys, cooks, and leaves most things right now, which is frustrating to see.

Roll on Monday if all goes to plan.

Sorry you mum is having such a bad time of it Snazy, have to hope that they can sort it out for her. As you say it won't help if she won't eat. I felt the same way when I was in trouble too. Think the chemo affected me in that respect and I lost a great deal of weight. Once the chemo course was finished I gradually went back to normal and wish I could get some of the weight off instead!

Good luck on Monday.

They called back and left a message on the house phone yesterday which irritated me slightly, as I had left instructions to call ME not mum as she is deaf and cant hear what they are saying. Instead she just says yes and no all the time and agrees to whatever they are saying. On this occasion it was just a voicemail, but she could not call them back as she could not hear the number they left. But she didnt let me know either.

Thinking this was the confirmation phone call I was a bit worried that she would miss her slot, so called them back first thing this morning, only to be told that someone in the office had accidently called to confirm, however there is still no actually confirmation that they have fitted her in on the theatre schedule.

So instead they are going to call ME back later on this afternoon to let me know for sure what is actually happening and confirm one way or the other if the op is on or not for Monday.

Got my fingers crossed that its all go.

In other news, my sister went round while I was at work yesterday, and when I got home I discovered she had helped out by tidying up a bit in the kitchen. Unfortunatly on neatly stacking and packing things, she put most of the stuff my mum CAN actually eat out of reach lol. Her intentions were good, sadly her knowledge and common sense levels were poor.

Hope its all confirmed anyway Snazy. Sounds a bit like left and right hands at the hospital.

Good to hear your sister is showing a bit of responsibility at last. Sounds like she is not so good on the lateral thinking bit!

Indeed mate, its nice to have a little weight lifted, even though the outcome is not quite as desired.

Hopefully the right person will deal with todays call back and will know what the right hand is doing too.

Ok, so after a long day, an update.
Spent the day at Guys surgical admissions lounge for mums operation. A brief assessment on her arrival showed her BP down low. So low that the nurse used a second machine, then did it manually only to get the reading 80/60.

A few more consultations with the surgeon, and the anaesthetist and the concern about her BP remained.

By early afternoon she was flailing a little, and the nurse was paying close attention. Mum was starting to get a lot of pain as she could not take her usual pills.
By 4pm the nurse decided enough was enough and on taking her BP again, failed to get ANY reading at all, 3 times! She requested mum be taken to a holding bay by theatre, and put on a drip to stablise her. The staff who dealt with this were fantastic, and the nurse who moved us to the holding bay was super. My god the blankets from the recovery rooms are toasty warm lol.

Once on the drip things immediately started to look up, and I'm pleased to say, by 5.15 she was being taken off to theatre.

I have just got off the phone to the wards staff nurse who says everything went ok, mum is out of recovery and on the ward....... Asking for food! Which she has not done for days.

Now to take the new hearing aid I bought her into her tomorrow and make yet another thing better for her.

PS the day started on a crap note, half way to admissions they had a fire alarm and a full evacuation. Which is no mean feat with a hospital the size of Guys.

After a shaky start, things have picked up no end. I'm sure that's a huge relief for you.

Plus, she is wanting to eat (and managing), that is a good sign surely. I bet that will make her feel better and stronger. It's good to hear she is doing well.

Not sure things did pick up lol, just carried on badly really. Glad she is eating though.
She has just sent a message to say there is a problematic bleed again, so unlikely to be coming home today. Rather demoralised at the moment, so trying to lift her spirits a little. Hoping to get into the hospital before the doctors do their rounds so I can get an understanding of what's going on, rather than depending on my mums interpretations of what the doctors have said lol.

Going to take her new hearing aid in to her today too, fingers crossed she will wear one again, and it will help her communicate and make life a little more bareable.

Sorry its such an up and down business Snazy. Puts a lot of pressure on you as well. Good to hear she is eating, always a good sign. Hope the managed to get the bleed stabilised and that the doctors give you better news as well.

Best wishes to your Mum, thanks for keeping us informed too.

Just got back from the hospital. Interesting visit!
On my arrival I gave mum her new hearing aid. She got it set up and voila is now hearing again. No sooner had we started talking the woman from a bed over walked up and opened with "would you mind being quiet at night, you kept me awake. Could you just lay still?"
Slightly taken aback I waited to hear what else she had to say. She went on to say "you were alseep all day downstairs (the admissions lounge), then kept me awake with your messing about last night"

Time to put her straight. I pointed out that mum was actually almost blacking out NOT sleeping, and was very ill yesterday. However it appeared she was more interested in telling my mum how she expected her to behave.

In fairness to the woman, mum did say later that she was trying to read her paper as she could not sleep last night, which I am sure was very annoying for the woman. However this did not excuse her manner.

I think due to the painkillers, mum is a little fuzzy about what happened last night, so naturally she was not very polite back to the woman.

Anyway, moving on lol.
She has a drain in again, which to prevent snagging it again, she is carrying around in a bag (again a bit noisy). Realising this is both not a smart solution and is likely to cause more grief I tried to think of a way for her to carry the bottle. Quick thinking, she is now wearing my belt with the bottle attached, while I struggled home trying to keep my jeans up on the train lol.

Good news is, she is eating well, inc the choc from Hotel Chocolat that I bought her. Boasting about what she had for breakfast and lunch, things are looking up.

And just to round it off, I have bought her a new TV for when she gets home, a nice little 32" LCD jobbie.

Your poor Mum. She is really going through the mill. Let's hope this sorts things out for her and she can get back to normal.
Bigs hugs to her. Does she know about the tv or is it a surprise. I would love to see her face when she gets home

Oh and this might just make you smile. Just about bad tempered patients.
One of my friends thought he had a stroke, it turned out to be Bells Palsy. Anyway, to cut a long story short, whilst he was in hospital (all of 2 days) the bloke in the bed opposite moaned and whinged on all the time.
My mate ( he is not the most tolerant man) finally had enough and went over to his bed to ask what was wrong with him. Blood pressure he said. Is that all, said my mate, if you don't stop effing well whinging, I will wait until you go to sleep and smother you.
The bloke went rigid.
A nurse who heard it all, came over to my mate and said Mr S*****, are you threatening my patients, she then bent down and tucked him in and whispered, cheers, we've been wanting to do that all day, but couldn't
Everytime the bloke moved, my mate rustled his newspaper, and the bloke went very quiet
Hope that cheers you up a bit, Snazy

Lol brilliant story.
I was considering having "a word" with the woman myself, but thought better of it. After all it would be me getting kicked out and told not to come back. Nothing nasty, just telling her a few facts, and asking her to ease up.

From recollection she was whining about the wait in the admissions lounge too, stating she had asthma as a reason they should put her first.

Mum usually gives as good as she gets, so if the woman carries on I can see it getting nasty lol. The funniest part was the woman standing in front of us both and stating "I'm bed-bound" errrm, no ya not luv.

I have dropped a hint about the tv, but not fully. Her sister was poking fun on the phone the other evening because she just got a new one lol.
The thing she loves the most is her hearing aid. Hopefully that will make life a little easier for her now. She has been without one for about 15-20 years, I'm just slow to think of these things.
