I don't understand why the webmasters post was considered trolling, he quoted what was in Jap Performance mag and asked a question

back to topic.

Developments are never without setbacks. I am sure that given the choice, Paul and the gang at Zen would prefer not to do development on the new car during events but were forced to as changing cars mid season was not an option due to points not being allowed to be carried over.

Massive progress has been made but some problems have been experienced - it is only natural given the hugely ambitious plans and limited time. They were forced to run a part finished car to get points and in true gritted spirit did some damage in the progress. In terms of trolling on here, I am sure webbie had the best intentions as Paul and Liz hadnt really updated threads with post donny stuff as they went for a well earned rest. Please dont use this great project thread to grieve other issues Sticky Mickey.

I am convinced that Knockhill will be a huge step forward for them and from my perspective I wish them the very best of luck.

Default ZEN wheels

The wheels are Hyper Zero-1, we first saw them in Japan in December. They are available to buy from ZEN Performance.

The wheels on our car (18 x 9) weigh 9.64kg. All Hyper Zero-1 wheels have full Japanese approval - JAWA / JWL / VIA (learn more here). The cost of the wheels in bronze, is £150 +vat per corner for the 18s, the price for the 17s is TBC. In chrome (if you want to go bling) the price is £215 +vat per corner.

Paul and Tom (ZEN driver) promoting the wheels at Knockhill:

Finally a chance to post something worthy.

As Shaun has pointed out we (I) didn't post about the problems we had at Donnington, but if he had bothered to read the thread carefully, I'm sure he would have noticed that I haven't posted anything at all, good or bad.

Progress up to Donnnington was I felt good, but we went with a car that wasn't finished, hoping to do some testing and maybe pick up a few points along the way. Unfortunately the headgasket failed on the engine early on, due to dropping liners in the block, despite having run the engine, stripped and decked it to specifically avoid that happening. We also ended up with more oil surge but weren't able to pick it up until it was too late due to the datalogger cable going **** up on the weekend. And that was that.

We would have liked to be more prepared for Knockhill, however we don't have the luxury of abandoning everything for 6 weeks to work on our race car. And we have in that time also doubled the size of our premises, taken on extra staff, installed a rolling road, had a small holiday, recovered from donnington and done lots of work on customer cars.

We have now moved the car on nicely, and it's a shame we didn't pick up a podium at knockhill given how close we were on times. Had the pinon not died in the rear diff on the saturday, we would have had a day of testing under our belt with the new setup, and the 3 seconds or so we picked up during sunday would have been already in place.

Timewise we have struggled in a number of areas, mainly terminal understeer on the car, caused by the rear ARB not being stiff enough. So to overcome it we worked hard on the front of the car, but by the final we had gone a little too far and resulted in quite a skittish car. Tom did very well with the car, and if you look at our speed traps you will see we were well down on power compared to normal, as we had too little time mapping, so ran with a known safe map, with probably about 540hp or so, less than many club cars.

But now we have a car to work with, and tweak rather than having to reinvent the wheel. I am paticularly happy with the rear radiator setup which worked well throughout, and having no oil surge or oil pressure issues throughout the weekend. The only two problems we encountered were the rear diff, and a coolant pipe poping off 30 seconds from the end of the final.

We have plenty of good data to work with, and will hopefully attack silverstone with a good deal more power, the handling dialled in somewhat better, and a few subtle developments on the car. Tom Ferrier will remain with us for Silverstone, and we hope to get a test in before then. For now I'm happy the car is in one piece.

I would like to thank our sponsors in no paticular order:

Do Luck Racing Service (side skirts)
EXE-TC Competition suspension (custom 4 way suspension system)
T.M. Works (ignition coils)
Hyper Zero One (wheels)

Whitfield Race Engines (engine build services)
AET Turbos

Great work Paul and your team, a few new faces too (well I've not met them before )

Car looks great, now with wing on and decals, wasn't sure about it at Donny, and the pictures don't do it justice.

Glad it was running on the Sunday after the problems the day before, you looked particularly stressed so I kept out of the way.

Some great times and the improvement in lap times was noticeably quicker, and even more impressive considering the power deficit.

I can't wait to see it running at Silverstone. I think its going to be very close there indeed.

Good Luck and see you there.

Dill

What a great day at knockers I had! cars went very well from a spectators point of view. Your scoob sounded sweet and looked the part.
Its a nice colour don't get me wrong, but when you see the RC cars I thought a brighter colour would make it stand out more! (not have a dig at your great build or work.)
Good luck for the rest of the season and hope to try and get down to some of them.

There was plenty of opportunity to look under the bonnet at Knockhill. I am sure that someone got some photos Either that or book your car into Zen

I actually managed to miss this thread up till today...

Awesome car you have build, I'm quite jealous of your skills and efforts, and parts too.

Paul, is your chassis the same as mine, I have no idea how many versions there are of these chassis.
I assume it is but if it's not I am curious how much they are different from each other.

Also, I'm very curious on how you built your suspension, any chance of me getting to know this for my project?

Good luck on your effort with the time attack, I'm sure once you get the car sorted it will put fear into the rest of the field!

It reminds me of the Hulk BTW.

greets

Aram

I've got a couple of under bonnet photos of the Zen car, but haven't had time to upload them yet.

You can view lots of other photos from the weekends activities here:

Time Attack & EDC at Knockhill May 2008 - a set on Flickr

The under bonnet photos will appear here later this week when I find time (I'm currently in a hotel on the other side of the world!)

There's even a hi-res photo of the Zen car here:

Time Attack Zen Performance Impreza on Flickr - Photo Sharing! (click on the all sizes button and select original)

There's some hi-res photos of other Imprezas taking part as well mixed in with the low-res ones, but you'll just need to go searching for those
