So what? Senior management have made the call that burger flippers should be clean shaven. They're in charge of the loot! If little Oik doesn't comply then he gets managed out of the business. Sending him home for a smarten up seems like a good start; letter of concern next and so on and so forth. It'd be easier for the lad to simply get the farkin' razor out until he can find a stubble friendly firm.

Sorry, but to me this typifies modern Britain.
You're surprised that an employer has sent your son home for being scruffy - rather than being defensive and wanting to find out the policy so you can have a moan, how about bollocking him and making sure he's learnt his lesson. Pride and professionalism have to be more important than whinging and thinking it's ok to turn up at work looking scruffy.

Asking what the policy is, isn't whinging is it

There was a time when a gaffer said jump you automatically replied how high. Times have a changed though. In order to attract business in ANY trade one has to sell themselves before the product, appearance is one of those facets that helps.

Managers are there to manage. There is a lot of responsibility on their shoulders and they didn't get to that position by chance. Fact is like it or not they have the authority to ask/compel you to do something. However any workforce including the manager must work as a team not individuals.

The point I was trying to get at, as I detected a little sarcasm from Paul , was maybe the reason his son had been able to have a beard or stubble before, was down to a different manager being in charge at that time.

I think you're right, different managers seem to keep to the letter of the law. I was just wondering if it was a sending home offence, after he had just done six hours of an eight hour shift

I think it would have been fair play tbh if he'd been sent home straight away, if that was how the particular manager was running things. However, I do feel it is a tad on the harsh side to say the least, to do this after 6 hours already at work. Perhaps it was the first time the manager had seen him, I don't know, but maybe a fairer way of dealing with it, would have been to say carry on with his shift, but make sure after this he comes in clean shaven, if that is their policy.

I'm sure it only just about meets EU regulation to be called food..
Anyhoo its not like he's got a huge professor's beard is it?? And I'm sure his contract will give him the opportunity to wear a beard sock, because they wouldnt want to discriminate now would they?
Tell him to go back to work and request a beard sock, if they cant supply one then its the companies problem.

your son has learned a good lesson in appearance and being smart to work in the public domaine
I hope they docked his pay too
I have sent people home with no pay for similar things
If he want to be scruffy he is in the wrong job and you have to learn disaplin to get on in this world
