yep, i get flashed loads, its mainly other car drivers that seem offended that we drive something faster than them. muppets, all of them.

i find van and lorry drivers surprisingly polite. Even had one lorry indicate left on a straight to imply it was clear and i could pass him as i couldn't easily see round him

Never been flashed by a car I've overtaken, but I've been flashed a few times by cars coming in the opposite direction. I must add that these have been very comfortable overtaking manoeuvres, no desperate swerves back into the left lane, no need for oncoming vehicles to alter their driving at all. Again, it's as though overtaking is by definition dangerous in the eyes of some motorists, no matter how safe the manoeuvre actually is.

On the other hand I do flash when overtakers in the opposite direction get it wrong and I have to brake to avoid a collision ! If you need to rely on another vehicle taking avoiding action to prevent an accident, you're driving dangerously.

On the contrary I've driven like a complete tit and never been flashed once in the company works vehicles. These include

VW Golf
Vauxhall Corsa
VW LT transporter

And whatever rental we have lying around (usually a Focus, Astra or something French).

Never get flashed no matter how fast I drive or what I overtake, be it as stupid or daring as it be..

On the flipside, take a chavved up Impreza, or non chavved NSX, Monaro, BMW and sedately overtake a meandering 40mph'er on a NSL road, and its fists flailing, lighs a flashing and glares of fury.

Now, my old (non-chavved) Impreza didn't get that type of treatment either....unless I was tailgating like a tit beforehand - so they could see the scoop and conclude I was one of those rally-wannabe types.

This Goverment/Plod has by Big Brother Tactics, convinced Mr/Mrs I will do whatever I'M told, tooooooo not go faster than 35mph ANYWHERE!!!

ANYONE WHO GOES FATER THAN THE 35MPH INVISIBLE SPEED BARRIER, IS A RAGING LUNATIC AND SHOULD BE FLASHED/WHIPPED OR WORSE STILL SENT OFF SOMEWHERE TO WEAR AN ORANGE JUMPSUIT.

hmmm, there have been times where people are driving sooooo slow I have contemplated turning the car round and over taking them in reverse, at least they would be justified in flashing me then

Its not a new thing either. I remember my dad overtaking someone at night 20 years ago. Flashing lights and main beam left on. Dad slowed down, let them past and sat behind them with full beam on for a few miles before blasting past again.

No, that's not quite right. As Clarkson puts it, "Speed itself does not kill, it's the sudden stop that's the bummer!!"

I saw a HGV do the same while sat behind it and an Audi A4, A4 pulls out to overtake, I hang back as my visibility is now zero waiting for the A4 to complete it's manoeuvre. Audi then anchors on and would have collected me on swinging back in if I hadn't eased off when he went for it. Another HGV passes on the opposite carriageway a split second later. I could only assume the HGV driver caught his indicator and nearly set a fatal chain of events in motion. Either that or he thought a fatal accident would have relieved the boredom of the day.

Regarding the people flashing their lights when you overtake- the highway code says that it's a signal to let you know they are there, I take it as such then get on with my day and the next overtake. If they shake their fists I presume it's in solidarity with another road user and will often smile and wave back if safe to do so.

I always used to flick on the anti-lag for a while

My favorite by far is passing someone doing 40, then seeing them catch up with you when you enter a town at 30. I always slow to about 20, then on the national limit sign anti-lag back on, couple of large bangs and foot to the floor in 2nd.

I've always wondered what impression that gives

I get this all the time. Most of the time I tend to ignore it as I am way past the bugger by the time he has woken up.

What I find more scary (in fact down right dangerous) is when you are passing someone crawling along on a B-road with plenty of visability of the road ahead and the *******s start drifting across and try put you into the bushes. Just grateful for the scoobs acceleration, as on all three occasions I have managed to get past without being bumped. Can't believe these idiots actually think this is an acceptable thing to do on the road.

Use to drive many miles in fleet cars.. Always found truck drivers to be some of the most curtious drivers there are.. If im now getting overtaken by a truck (when drviing landy) i will wait till they have passed a safe distance and then flash them back in infront of me so they know theres room.. Awlays get the happy indicator left/right signal saying thanks.

Drove upto north wales once and was on a national limit road single gcarage way each way.. coming around a blind bend was this mazda rx8 overtaking a line of traffic.. I threw the anchors out and laid some tyre rubber on the road, he missed me by inches thanks to the other cars making space for him.. Muppet.. Although I was drivin a 2tonne ex MOD landy that would have really spoilt his day

My road to work is a 60mph road and quite often I overtake safely and get this happen to me, when i took my test 30 years ago my driving insturctor told me if it is safe to do the limit do it, I do beleive a lot of these drivers are the main cause of quite a few accidents, I did ask on the 5-0 website once why is it that people do not get stopped for driving to slow I mean if you go over the speed limit you get nicked and I do beleive if you drive under the speed limit you should be treated the same, sadly a lot of these drivers are older people who think that because of the type of car we drive think that we are the ones who should not be on the road.
Cheers
Colin

You lot have got it all wrong....

The flashing of the lights etc. is in recognition of your excellent overtaking manoeuvre, your superb driving skills, and appreciation of the fact they they've been overtaken by such a cool car. I always slow down a little and give a wave of thanks, before dropping a cog and disappearing into the distance.

They really seem to appreciate that and flash there lights even more. I'm soo glad that I've made there day for them.

The problem is the noise, I had someone shout at me whilst doing 15mph in 1st gear in a 30 (near a school) but cause the revs are so high (in the audi) people go nuts because they think your going much quicker than you are. Same when you drop a cog and go from 30 to 60+ v quickly, people seem offended by the noise and think your going at light speed.

Still to everyone out there doing 30 in a 60

Sorry folks yo9ur in the wrong cos your speeding, I have done nothing wrong lol! Mines an auto so a half throttle launch is very very sedate... Muppets!

It's a different story now in P.C. gone mad Britain, it's a terrible, anti-social, planet-killing thing to do and you're a deadly, accident-waiting-to-happen, foolish, crazed, drug taking/dealing maniac. Not a hard-working person, enjoying their hobby and overtaking in a safe place with a good view at all.

Oh, and I really love the flashing then full beams thing. In fact it drives me ******* mad TBH.

If I knew where to find a w*nker smiley, I'd post it in honour of them all.

Overtakers of the world unite.

NB: If you do overtake doing over 30mph in a built up area, you also deserve the above w*nker smiley.
ditto...its exacerbated by a loaud 'zorst because people think you are moving more quickly than you actually are...one good reason for running a quite system

When they do this to me I usually slow back down to 40mph. Drop to 2nd, floor it and call up vmax. I like them to witness that their stupid rant will only result in me driving like a lunatic and breaking the speed limit by at least a factor of 2

Happens, but I just ignore it and carry on - as I am now doing twice the speed I was before so need to be a lot more aware!

Everyone else on the road is a **** including you. Use this assumption and it will be a nice surpise when someone doesn't live up to your expectations and normal when they do.

I have been flashed occasionally but not since I have approached overtaking in a different way.

I tend to drive with headlamps continously even in good weather. I stay well back to maximise view and look at the road the road as far as the horizon, even if it is not in my direct line of sight.

I then overtake as rapidly as possible and leave it as long as is safe before moving over to the correct lane. This approach usually means you have put a t least 10 car lengths between you and the car you have overtaken and invariably they don't flash.

While on the subject of overtaking, the thing that bugs me is when trying to get past a wagon in the rain through all the spray and stuff, the person in front who's also overtaking wagon wants to try to do it within the speed limit, so you're stuck behind them in all the spray with wipers on full speed like driving under water. I'm thinking, "do we want to get past this thing or not"?

5t.
You're totally spot on there mate, I do plenty of B-road driving, and come across this type of driver all the time. Mainly the eldery too! 45mph no matter what road or speed limit they are on/in.

TBH, If you can see them flashing or shaking their fist in disapproval, you didn't overtake quickly enough and haven't put enough distance between you and the offending vehicle!

The Highway code says you should overtake as quickly as possible!

Happy to oblige!

I think I have an explanation for this behaviour.
This is the land of queues. It seems some people have deemed themselves to be in some sort of a queue (even if they are driving on a deserted stretch of road), and anyone overtaking them is an antisocial queue jumper, and should be treated as such. Good job the cars I mostly drive dispatches these idiots very rapidly, and I smile at the concept that losing your temper takes 5 minutes off yout life, and not only has the twit been overtaken (safely I might add), but he will grace this planet for 5 minutes less

The other thing that pisses me off, is when you get to a lane closure on dual carriageways. People start queuing miles before the bollards, and attempt to block people using the closed lane from overtaking them. Can they not think that only using one lane effectively doubles the length of the queue, including backing it up through god knows how many roundabouts behind them causing chaos for the other motorists crossing said roundabouts.
In said situations, if you use both lanes and filter right at the narrowing, that would be the most efficient and fair system for both lane users. Twits.
