Thanks for all your input, but realy it doesn't matter anymore.

Interesting to see that people don't read and digest before posting though

No turbos allowed.
Are you allowed a supercharger though?

N/A Toyota TRD Sports M Celica churned out 200bhp from 1.8 litres

I still think the S1 Exige would be quickest, if the S2 wasn't allowed.

Only 190HP, shame they didn't stick the R500 TB's on it - 230HP from a 1.8!

The VVti (without lift) is a mere 140 bhp.

I'm still sticking with the 200bhp 1.8 Toyota engine from the TRD Sport M Celica - standard model you could buy

The Toyota unit is pants though. Pathetic torque and a powerband as wide as my little finger which also happens to be right at the top of the rev range.

I bet I could tune a BDA to perform better in a car of equal weight

Might well be pants....but the OP asked for the most powerful NA 1800cc standard production engine without a turbo I believe

I did ask if a supercharger was allowed in which case I would have changed my answer

Anyway, aside from the perceived qualities of Japanese high revving engines , anyone know a more powerful NA 1800 as I'm interested to know

The op asked "FASTEST car with less than 1800cc n/a"

Anyway, BHP is not a definition of "powerful" though, it is a measurement of work (torsional force) in a given amount of time to cover a distance (rotation). i.e: torque x rpm/5252

"Powerful" is defined as the capeability of exterting power: That could be BHP as a sole number be it at a point at 8500rpm with a huge trough of nothingness below that, or a broad spread of power from 2000-7000rpm

By mathematics alone, an engine revving past 5252 rpm will display a higher bhp and even more so as the maximum revs increase; despite lack of effective torque, this is why a 1300cc Hayabusa engine will produce 170bhp

The BDA is a production engine in a production car (with a roof), albeit a very rare one

Well he actually asked both questions

What standard BDA engine in what car are you nominating then?
I think if you asked 10 people on here to measure power on an engine they'd quote you the BHP figure no matter how technically wrong that might be.....

Sorry but Power is work done in a give time, nothing to do with rotation. the m part of rpm is the important bit.

Work does not have to be torsional, altho in an engine it clearly is. Given amount of distance (Eh!!!)

Bravo to the man who spotted my slip of the formulae

And seeing this is in relation to an engine I pretty much hope that rotational work /torsional force a given, unless we want to start talking about the reciprocating parts

the VAG kr 1.8 16v 139 bhp as standard but pulls like a train. no use in a heavy mk2 golf but put it in something a little lighter and they're unreal . Can comfortably pull 170bhp with cams and porting.

So the TRD Sport M variant Celica with the standard 200bhp 1.8 ( naturally aspirated ) is the most powerful? Max of 148/149mph for top speed.

I thought there would be something quicker/more powerful lurking around?

EK9 was 185bhp, DC2 187 UK/197JDM I believe?

And it was only quicker on the 0-60.
