Just out of interest, is everyone who runs high 300's+ running tougher gearboxes than standard? Just because one of the main reasons I kept my recent turbo swap to a 16G and no more, hoping for well under 350bhp, is because I can do without transmission worries.

Is a new transmission something that my fellow Snetters budget for when going for the 400 mark (or close) or is it just a case of drive it till it breaks and keep a couple of grand handy for a fancy gearset? Or do the later 6 speed boxes do the job?

It is torque that will kill the 5 speeder.
Several of us racing the 5 speeder are running 360 or more Lbft with slicks, slightly on borrowed time but mine is fine after 3 years of this: (20g)

Presumably that's the later 754 version, not the 752? I am fairly sympathetic to the transmission on the road, but on track I've got to admit I get pretty brutal with the gearchanges without thinking about it.

I ran over 300 in my Type R. I was also brutal on track and only ever damaged 5th gear synchro (It had the V-limited spacing).

mine ran the standard 754 box at 371hp then 390 and last 418hp and only buggered 3rd gear sinc after about 10,000 miles and then upgraded to a ppg kit which also crunches must get it sorted!

I have a 2.5ltr running approx 380bhp and torque, maybe higher, on a standard TY754 uk box. Upto press it's been ok with no un-usual noises.

so the strategy is; break a 752, get a 754. But what are the other options if you break a 754, short of a new gearset (for a couple of grand IIRC?)?

I have run 752 and 754 boxes on the same engine with no probs. The slicks though are only on the 754 Type R box I have with dccd in at the mo.

The economical option is the 6 speeder to the TY754/752

Few have damaged them. As a diy instal you will pay about £1800 for the box/shifter/prop/rear diff.
You will pay an extre 30Kg too but on a car that tips the scales @ 1250 ish KG hardly a big issue?

I do not know of another upgrade option other than the PPG kit which is well over £2K, but you have the light weight, the simple install to the car and you keep the rear diff.

I drove a helical/synchro PPG last month and it was very nice. no crunches when driving normally, but the owner said it can crunch (a little) when shifting fast.

I was running around 400lb/ft ish, on a TY754, and thought is was handling the power very well, was often loosing traction in second, then last week was in the process of hitting the limiter in first and then swiftly changing into second only to here all the cogs start grinding.

I drained the oil at the weekend and got some sovenirs

I Knew we should have turned the boost down

I am sure it would have lasted alot longer had I shown it more respect!

Just waiting for the christmas bonus now see how close I can get to the PPG gearset, oh and the new Ecu

I have just down tuned my classic.

From 450/450, 6 speed, down to approx 320ish/5 speed...

The 450 job happened so quick, before you knew it you were at mental speeds in such a short period of time, and were at known corners/bends traveling so much faster, you really did have to alter your driving style, and be very aware of other road users..

I am now in a lesser spec, and TBH actually find it easier and less frantic to drive quicker on the roads..

But then again, maybe I'm a bit chicken...

The 321H is totally fantastic, it spools much the same as the vf28 but does not let up at all im running 1.7 bar which arrives at 3400rpm going down to 1.6 so well within the turbos ability. on normal V-power the 321h will usually give around 30bhp more than the 20G and spool much the same. the AFP5/20G really does spool very well and not laggy like some cheap import ones. have a look over on 22b.com at the 20G thread and see some graphs.
I am very happy i went for the 321h cant stop smiling when driving now.
