Just spoken to ConsumerDirect ..... what excellent people!!

The Sales of Goods Act overrides any warranty

It states that the product must be of Satisfactory Quality for the price paid - it should be free from MINOR defects (which ALSO covers it's appearance and finish)

Clearly, a flashing bright green pixel in a reasonably central position destroys the viewing pleasure and should not be expected of a £799 Flat Screen Plasma TV.

Basically, they said, I am well within my Consumer Rights to demand a repair or replacement .................. this sounds good, I LOVE a fight!!

I had a problem with my Viera that I had purchased at Currys. The tech guys were useless. The TV was buzzing and their rules said that unless it was more than 40% of the volume slider it was within spec. They didn't listen to it or anything. And we never listen to the TV at anythign like 40% of the slider. If you had to have it that loud the whole street would be able to hear it. Unfortunately this all fell on deaf ears and I really was made to feel like a wierdo and the only one who could hear it.

I rang Panasonic and asked their advice. Apparantely I could take the TV to any Panasonic authorised repair dealer (as it was still in Warranty). A guy round the corner agreed to check it out at no cost. As soon as he heard it said " it's pretty loud isn't it?". After checking with Panasonic it appears this is a manufacturing fault and there is a special repair procedure. All done under warranty.

Won't be buying anything from Curry's again, simply because their technical department is rubbish.

Word of advice Pete

Dont accept a repair. If you accept a repair, you forfeit your right to rejection/ replacement, if the repair, or subsequent repairs does not cure the problem.

They may call your bluff, so be prepared to go through the small claims court.

Its about £35 notes to register a claim

Well, the 'Tech Guys' have just been ................... is the pixel inside the area or outside??

It's borderline, which is what they said last time I TOOK TIME OFF WORK!!

We will take it away to the workshops for them to decide what to do - NO I DON'T THINK SO!! .....................

I said what will your report say? They said "Offered to take away, customer refused"!!! Cheeky gits!!

I asked the MD to send someone who could make a decision to repair or not - not someone who needed to ring the workshops again!!!

He asked how to measure where the pixel is - is it the panel, the case or the visible area ........... the workshops didn't know (and he wanted to send it there for up to 28 days to assess!!!!) NO WAY!!!

Thats it - gloves off!!

How noticeable is it from the distance that you actually sit at? I doubt i'd actually notice one dead pixel from 10/20ft! You do right in trying to get it changed though!
I once had a PSP that I bought from Dixons that had a dead pixel, they swapped that no probs, it took the testing of three other PSP's to get one that was fine though!

Didn't they swap a PCB or something the first time they looked at it? Sounds like you're fooked / stuck with it either way

The buy cheap buy twice motto certainly does seem to ring true here. Just write it off as a bad experience and get a proper TV Pete (Pioneer etc.). An insignificant amount of cash to a man of your means, sounds like the two times you've had to be off work for the repair men to turn up would have paid for a replacement.

so what is actually better for watching sport, music and films on say a 42" tv?

im considering getting one to replace the 24" panasonic widescreen ive got in the front room. well when monies better...

whats the pro/cons of plasma lcd?

seen loads in curries etc for around £800. always deals with discounted home cinema/stands etc etc...

They have carried out no repair whatsoever ..... simply turned up and shook their heads.

Apparently, I have given them 2 chances to repair the TV - they have chosen not to ...... now, I will reject the TV and demand a refund or like-for-like replacement.

Depends where you look, for £800 in the right places you can find a good Panny Viera which will outperform everything other than Pioneer on the market. And telling him to go with an LCD... Which are the sets renowed for pixel failure? Maybe you should read AVForums a bit more than for 10 minutes

Plasma all the way, no ghosting etc. You dont get many cheap plasmas like you do LCDs because Plasma is known for quality which, as testified by many already in this thread alone, you get whatyou pay for

Ooh! Get her! I have a Panasonic Viera myself, though it cost considerably more than £800. If you can indeed get one for that price then it's a bargain.

When I was looking at the forums (about 18 months ago) there seemed to be issues with dead pixels on both LCD and plasma sets, but you're obviously the authority here

Not authority, I dont know how you decide to make such presumtions. Im only getting involved with stuff I have a half decent bit of knowledge about.

My Viera is 2 Gens old now, I paid £2k when it was new, thats going back some now, yet still better than most LCD's out there but outperformed by alot of newer plasmas.

Well, another letter is being composed for the Managing Director of Currys.

The legal advice I have had is that Currys are trying to restrict my rights under The sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) .... by quoting warranty 'conditions'.

The Tech Guy said today that The Sale of Goods Act has nothing at all to do with the faulty TV Classic

Why are CURRYS Customer services so ****?? It serves no purpose except to get them a bad name!?

Thing is Pete, Currys are operating to whatLG can get away with Legally.

I honestly think its going to get you nowhere unless you speak harshly to the Currys manager or go to LG directly.

LG direct are crappier than CURRYS!!!

I go straight to the top - the Managing Director - ain't no higher than that.

My Legal Info is that I should go to court sooner rather than later - £35 to raise a small claims summons - let the judge decide if he thinks it's of 'Satisfactory Quality'.

I love things like this - I always get my way in the end - CURRYS simply do not want to go to court ....... quite why they are acting so arsey is amazing really.

Lets assume they made £450 on my TV - a Replacement would not cost them a penny as they would use their clout to tell LG to supply a replacement. I mean, to say that LG tell them what to do is pathetic!! LG need CURRYS to sell their stuff!!

So, why don't CURRYS act more like John Lewis??

That's what you get for investing in new technology before its really ready for market!

You assume they made £450 on your TV? Only if they sold it to another 100 people would they have done that Pete. Oh and its ok, I believe you spoke to LG's MD Dont tell too many people though cause they might not believe you

Oh as for the £35 to start court proceedings, all good and well until it goes further than "well roll over Mr Lewis"

Anyway, Your now starting to act like you know how to deal with the proceedings (all good as far as Im concerned, hope you shaft them and get a 50" for all I care) so why bother asking here?

p.s. Forgive me Im in a strange mood tonight, lost a bot of cash on the footy lol

Sounds like a typical Lewis **** and bull story - Been winding up for it for months since he bought his TV..

Plenty of opportunity to big himself up and act the big i am, do a bit of fishing along the way, then proclaim he is the new messiah at the end of it when he takes on the might of Currys / LG and single handedly wipes the floor with them.

Hollywood Pete - has a nice ring to it?

Maybe you didn't understand quite, I meant the MD of CURRYS not LG.

And £35 is the cost to bring a small claim into court, remember I have acted MORE than reasonable in this case; I have taken time off work on two seperate occassions and on both occassions CURRYS have failed to repair the fault ......... CURRYS have acted unreasonably in not dealing with the fault and putting the buyer through significant inconvenience.

Ah it was because you'd already been back on something else before that.

Not too big to say sorry.

JL would have delivered it to you for free off their website though - doesn't have to be a store near you.

Basically i use dto work for them. They'd have swapped it and then put it on sale as ex-demo and highlighted the fault but they'd have left you with a TV you were happy with
