Well here's some pics of mine

We are in the middle of a self build. The wall shot is the living room. Will have a Panny 50PZ81B 1080P, PS3, Wii, Sky + and poss DVD - the main part is a Bose Lifestyle 48 system. Bose have done the first fix wiring and it includes multi room sound. Living room, dining room, bathroom and patio.

The patio shot shows wiring for a light above the french doors and the wires either side are for the Bose speakers

Did take a pic of the rear living room wall but battery was going so no flash and it came out crap. Just shows the wiring for the rear speakers.

as requested, not sure if i am going to leave this hooked up as its a bit to bright for me at the moment, but it does match the samsung tv and surround sound system as they both light up blue.

So does every one with backlighting leave it on when watching Movies?

I have everything LED turned off when viewing a DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray, even the AV gear displays.

Cheers

Leave it on. I used to be **** about switching off displays when I was into audiophile stereo equipment, but these days I can't be bothered. Plug it in, switch it on and enjoy. My old Cyrus amps had a power switch, selector and volume **** and that was it, not even a light to say it was on. The DAD7 CD player actually had seven independent power supplies inside which it activated only when needed, and I used to de-activate all displays and illumination during proper listening sessions. My Linn turntable only had a power switch too, with speed selection done by moving the belt to a different sized pulley on the spindle. Glad I've grown out of the obsession TBH.

Take your point about displays but what about the current trend for neons and backlighting?
Have been to a few HC's with this featured and found it distracting when watching a Movie as it alters the colour balance of the film.

I do have to dim the Onkyo's display as it's ultra bright in a darkened room and the illuminated Sony logo on the TV is always off as that bugs me as well at night.

I find a fully dark room leaves the screen just a little too bright, which can be tiresome and possibly lead to eye strain. With the backlighting on it's just right allowing the rest of the room to be dark, or maybe a couple of candles. As for colour balance, again, I'm not going to get into obsessing about subtle nuances in the hue. I set my plasma by eye, then checked it using a THX Optimiser on a DVD and it was almost pop on. I didn't have the red and blue filters to get it absolutely perfect, but it's good enough for me. I know some pay bods to come out and spend 3-4 hours in the engineering menus altering the gamut across the whole colour palette for £300+.

unsure at the moment, not watched anything film wise apart from king kong on freeview and tbh the quality was that crap, i forgot all about the lights

i do prefer to watch movies with the room darkened down quite a lot, but the main room lights are to bright.

need to sit down and watch some decent upscaled stuff to do a proper test, got the sarah chronicles dvd boxset to watch so might get a few episodes on tonight

at the moment, the back lighting is on a timer, it switches on when its dark and switches off at 2.45am, when the main tv power supply is switched off (tv is on a timer as well, because i am to lazy to switch off at the mains at the end of the day lol)

ps. my samsung sub/amp combo also lights up all blue anyway when switched on so i cant escape the blue unless i cover it in a blanket (its beside one of the sofas)

ps this is the kind of thing i used

120CM 60X Blue LED Flexible Strip Car Bar Line Light on eBay, also Lighting Customisation, Lights Lighting Accessories, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 10-Sep-08 05:07:08 BST)

very easy to hide and one side is stick so easy placed in hidden areas!

and all LED so costs **** all to run power wise

my room is not orange, that photo was taken last night with all lights off apart from the kitchen but the camera did as super long exposure to pick up some more light and made the room look a bit tango`ish lol

Backlighting helps with depth perception - with no lights on other than the tv, your eyes can't figure this out which leads to eyestrain.

Unfortunately cant wall mount as I have a late 1920's house and every wall is latin plaster, hanging a painting is bad enough let alone a big tv. May have them all redone eventually and think about wall mounting then but til then I am happy. One thing I do need to do though is get my finger out and spread my speakers properly to make the most of the surround sound
Cupradave - How much was your tv and surround sound?? I 'think' ive seen similar tv & surround sound in currys for £1000, is that about what you paid for it??

Everyone set-ups looks great!!! keep up the good work guys

I have had the surround sound system for about 3 years now, think I paid something like £250 for it

When I bought my TV last November the shop had a deal on where I could choose a free HD DVD recorder/freeview box or panisonic surround sound system for free, I took the recorder as I already had the Samsung surround sound system. I did alot of bartering and eventually came away from Comet with the TV and plinth, HD DVD recorder, black glass stand and all the gold plated cables I needed for everything you see in the pic for a grand, I was well chuffed.

I know the theory, Philips try to use it on their ambilght technology.

Both WhatHifi and Home Cinema Choice have done tests on backlighting and both concluded that a properly calibrated screen with low level, non coloured, room lighting gives the best results. The most common mistake on Home Cinema setups is to have the screen levels set to high for low light viewing which is the main cause of eyestrain (That and the screen being too small for the viewing distance).
It's all down to individual taste, I prefer the Cinema feel when watching movies.

Cheers
