1080p needs a digital signal and component is analogue. I don't think there's anything wrong with 720p out of the 360 though, the dashboard does look a bit bo11ocks compared to the PS3's 1080 offering though, but all of the games are all 720p anyway. (only 1080p game I've seen is the GT5 demo)
Unless you have a 1080p TV and the 360's HD DVD drive I see no benefit in connecting via HDMI rather than component, unless your TV's component sockets are being occupied by something else. The only time you may get an improvement is if your 360 is a long way from the TV and you have you a very long cable then you might start getting signal degradation that HDMI isnt affected by (well, only in extremes...)

That makes no sense at all.... you do know there are TVs out there (samsung F86 series etc) that accept 1080p over component fine. And what about VGA, also fine for 1080p.
The xbox will also output 1080p fine over component for games, it has done ever since the first 1080p update. You just have to have a tv to accept it, most are 1080i only via component. The box for the cable states 1080i max but that has never changed since the console was launched... i.e when it was 1080i max. They just havent bothered to update the packaging.
As a summary the 360 will do...
HDMI:
* HD DVD - 1080p resolution and all others
* DVD - Upscaled as high as 1080p resolution and all others
* Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p and native 1080p games
VGA:
* HD DVD - 1080p (1920x1080) resolution and all others
* DVD - Upscaled as high as 1080p resolution and all others
* Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p and native 1080p games
Note for VGA, 720p is the resolution of 1280x720 and 1080p is 1920x1080. All signals via VGA are progressive, it is not possible to do interlaced with this cable.
Component:
* HD DVD - 1080i resolution maximum, limited by AACS
* DVD - Standard progressive 576p maximum, limited by CSS
* Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p and native 1080p games

The TV may be able to accept it but the 360 can't output 1080p over component - VGA is digital and the only other way to get it do so, but its a PITA by all accounts, I've tried myself and it wasnt worth the hassle, gave a worse picture.
Unless the last update added anything, the 360 does not upscale anything to 1080p over component, and I could be mistaken but games aren't upscaled to 1080p over any connection, and there are no native 1080p games.
The HDMI port is also an "old" type if you will, its to the 1.2 spec which doesnt allow for any of the HD audio codecs.
I stand to be corrected, but I'll be severly pi55ed if I could have been gaming in 1080p all this time...

Tried it this morning, yes the option is there to output @ 1080p but it wouldn't work for me, had a black for 10 secs before it switched back to 720p.
I know that when you plug the VGA cable in the display settings lists a set of computer screen resolutions for you to choose from, so I'm guessing that the 1080p option is only for those with the HDMI port.

The 360 can and does output 1080p over component - And VGA isn't digital, it's an analogue signal.
Yes, it upscales to 1080p for games.
It all depends on whether your set can accept 1080p via an analogue signal (most can't)

The 1080p option is not an HDMI only thing.
I checked out the contents of the Elite 120gig hd lasnight,
It contains demo's of Cars, Test Drive Unlimited and a Viva Pinata video.
All current (As of manufacture date) arcade trials are preinstalled with the full Hexic installed.
Pretty shoddy line up tbh, if i was a new 360 customer and thats what i'm greeted with i'd be wondering if i'd bought the right console. Surely they could of atleast put some trailers up for forza, GOW, Halo 3, Bio, etc, i know the consoles where manufactured awhile back but they've had trailers available for awhile.
Luckily i already know theres plenty of good games available so i dont need to rely on MS's ****ty marketing welcome pack

However, rest assured that if you change your 360 to output 1080i, it is for all intents and purposes 1080p. (your set needs to de-interlace 1080i before displaying it - therefore it is a 1080p image, albeit constructed from an interlaced image) and with todays hardware, whilst not being quite up there with "true" 1080p, it is not far from it.

What TV is it, i'll tell you for sure if it will accept 1080p over component.
Tony.
