Frayz, not going to be too many regular updates for the short term, I'll leave that job upto you for a while..



Suffice to say, that it's bloody hard driving ths car whilst trying to keep it under 1 bar of boost, it just wants to **** orf....

I've only done 350 ish miles so far though, and I will probably be getting fully mapped sometime this month.

I have also got someone lined up to take some decent photos of the car pretty soon.

Oh, and BTW, also been busy looking for the new donor car for the next project, as soon as I find someone willing to pay for a ' 2 door, wide arch, newage 500+ bhp build'

Something similar could be done for an Impreza, with sufficient funding.

on a serious note, and without sounding too cheeky, what sort of cost would we be talking to build a car as you have done with this, parts and labour inclusive???

Depends on what car you start off with, and what spec you ultimately want...

If you start off with an STi for example, there are many parts which could be sold on for decent money, which will help pay for uprated stuff.
Similar with a WRX, but it will not generate so much recouperated income...

I will get my abacus out, and work some rough figures out...

that would be appreciated, genuinely interested to know roughly what sort of money is involved.

amazing project by the way, attention to detail is immpeccable and a truly stunning looking finished article.

OK, for those interested, I have worked out a rough figure to create something like I have done, based on a donor car of a 2003-5 STi, 6 speed box, R180 rear diff, in reasonable condition..

This price includes most, if not all of the modifications I have carried out, and would only go upwards if the spec was altered in any way as regards parts.

It wouldn't have been possible other wise...

I have been very careful and a bit lucky when it came to sourcing parts, doing deals here and there, getting trade discount wherever possible, and even making the most of Group buys etc..

Even though, it has still cost me a small fortune...

thats a lot of money, but after seeing the finished result, well worth it in my opinion, what will yopu end up with power wise when fully mapped?? 350-400 bhp possibly more, not much on the road that will touch it other than vastly more expensive italian exotica, one hell of a car for 60k.

not necessarily...Neil's car should be capable of handing lots of exotica their asses...I'm only running circa 360 in a classic wagon and I own my friends 355GTS

fair enough, on thinking about it, i think a ferrari 355 has approx 375 bhp, all going through rear wheels, it stands to reason that some of these scoobs and dare i say it evo's with 375-400bhp should be able to stick it to em, as it is going through 4 wheels in these not 2. makes for one hell of a road car for sure

OK, update time, entitled, Teething problems...

Having now done 500 ish miles, I decided it was time to give the car a quick once over and give it some decent oil, ready for a mapping session next week.

I also needed to address a small oil leak which had developed around the oil cooler area..

So car on ramp, and first thing I notice, is a whole lot of CV grease around the inside of the nearside front wheel and over not so shiney brake calipers.



Upon further inspection, and then even further-er inspection I found the smallest of slits in the CV gaitor, so new gaitor needed this week.



Oil leak next, having doubted my assembly of the fittings and re-tightening all the unions as tight as I could, I still had a leak somewhere.

Turned out to be the actual swaging of the fitting, which I was not happy with at all.



So a small phone call later, and I have the company who made them coming out to myself next week to address this problem.

Other than that, all seems well, so with a bit of luck I can get mapping next week.

Awesome car mate

Who made your blow through MAF tube for you?
I have a MAF flange already, but will need some custom pipework made up to work with my APS FMIC and the flange welded on and would like to have a contact ready for when I get to that stage of my build.

No unfortunately only Perrin do a blow through tube for their FMIC. 83mm I think and according to Perrin capable of 550 whp!

I would be interested to know how much headroom you have left on the MAF scaling with the 80mm tube. The stock APS FMIC tube is just under 73mm internal diameter, so that might just be enough for 450 to 475bhp I expect to make. I will try the flange welded on the stock tube first ... if it doesn't have enough resolution on the MAF scaling, I'll get some custom pipework made up.

OK, small update..

Had a mapping session last week, running the engine upto 1.25 bar.

So far I am more impressed with the smoothness and driveability of the set up, due largely to the blow through set up I am using, than anything else.

No hesitations at all under varying driving conditions, and I would recommend a blow through MAF with a std ECU as a very good budget set up...

It would seem that we have plenty of headroom in the MAF housing as well, so all good there.

Going to do a few hundred miles before another session of mapping in a fortnights time to exploit the engines full potential.

What size MAF pipe did you end up using in the end. Really pleased shes running well. Cant wait to get mine done now

Not exactly sure how much, but Andrew C (mapper) reckons we should be good for over 450ish.

MAF pipe I used was 73mm ID.

Mapped upto flat 1.3bar and rev limit increased to 7500, peak airflow voltage a smidge over 4.5 so plenty of headroom.

That's easy for you to say - personally I was well impressed with how little learned fuel correction there was from the first map and how smooth the closed loop to open loop transition is, must have just got lucky with the injector and MAF scaling I guess
