ahhhh, so i loosen the but directly on the pulley a little, allowing it to move up and down the tensioner thing ( ), and then the long bolt loosens the belt... gotcha. will give it a go, and turn the engine on.
il see you 19th september, as it me, something will go wrong/fall down a drain/blow up/go missing/**** oil everywhere

suprise suprise....
i cant get access to the bolt which loosens the pulley slightly. the bloody fans are in the way. can i just cut the air con belt off, as i never use the air con anyways... and can get a belt cheap enough.

chris, you are a legend, and you saw im eternally thankful.
just spent about 90 mins looking over the car. straight away, he put his finger on something. the noise is hopefully a knackered tappet, or one of the fuel injectors sticking.
this is much better than a fubared engine, me and chris having a good listen via his clever listening tool
so good news all round. at worst, if its a hydralic lifter/tappet, then il get all 8 replaced, and see if theres any damage to the valves. hopefully not as the noise hasnt been there that long.
if its an injector, possibly even better news as chris says its easier access to them. think its the rear one on the passenger side of the manifold. had a listen via the screwdriver method, and the rear one is tapping quite audably, whereas the front is quieter all round.
it all fits into place with regards the tappet theory, because when the engine is cold the oil is much thicker (i didnt know this ) so is probably blocking
the noise or whatever. but when warmed up, oil is much thinner, and thus the noise is easier to hear.
with me its blind leading the blind, so please excuse my stoopidity on this one. gonna get it to scoobybits asap, have jase look at it and see what he thinks if its similar to chris opinion.
thanks again chris, really appreciate your help on this, also sorted out a leaking fuel line with another clip.
im true to my word, you will have a free commission out of this mate. will talk to you about this in due course.
much happier now

No problem Andy, pleased to help, got me out of the grass cutting
I,m sure its the injector or at worst the tappet. It sounds nothing like the clip on here.
I'm amazed you've never used a screwdriver as a stethoscope, their not only for removing screws, stirring paint and chisels

Mine makes the same noise again from the pass side i have no aircon either and driveability and economy havent changed, been diagnosed as everythin from piston slap to blown exhaust manifold gasket making the valve noise louder.
