I was in a 730d previously as a passenger, and it was indeed very nice. RWD though, and I really want AWD. I really tried to convince myself that RWD with a limited slip diff would be OK through our winters and I didn't enjoy it one bit. Even when it wasn't raining it felt unstable when pushing on when the road temperatures were low. With winter tyres it might be OK, but I don't want that hassle.
I know I make it sound like the North pole, but RWD feels like a donkey with two legs compared to AWD to me. Maybe I upset the drift-meister RWD lovers, but that isn't what I want out of a car. I want huge gobs of torque that always get put onto the tarmac
So unless I go for an SUV which I don't really want to do, then it is Pork (X50 or tuned) or Audi RS (tuned if turbo) model I think. I wouldn't go for the aftermarket supercharger option because of maintenance, warranty, expense, resale, looks of the bonnet vent, although the RS4 supercharged looked great fun and sounded very nice indeed.

........
John..... AMG going , RS4 coming .......
I had a chance to look at a few cars to replace my AMG , and after pondering i went to the RS4 for Sept 1st. Overall it seems to do the daily driver in luxury with a sporty and refined ride better than most.
Cheers

Doesn't really qualify on the handling side (although it is very good for what it is) and I know it's an SUV, but what about the Toureg V10 diesel? Hilariously funny car to drive - worth it just to see the face of 911 owners when you stay with them on the motorway
They are going to be releasing a new 'sport' version very soon with another 50 / 60 bhp and god-knows how much torque. It will do mid 30s mpg if you are being sensible too.
Sounds fantastic too (for a diesel!)

RS6. Big power, effortless torque...and lots of power upgrades
You don't seem to mind spending out on brakes so you would have the cash to spend on aftermarket shocks should the DRC fail.
Mine hasn't (touches wood) but there are now kits available for the RS6 and that is what I will be doing if mine ever does.
