The film was brilliant, however, calling any film these days
a "masterpiece" is way off the mark. The book is a masterpiece
but not the film. Just been to see the film for the 3rd time and it just gets better, and I'll do the same with the new SW film.
I think people read too much into films these days, treat them for what they are, entertainment and escapism!!
And for peeps who haven't seen the film, if you liked Gladiator, Empire Strikes Back & Jason & the Argonauts, you'll love this film.

Saw it on Saturday. As a film, pretty good, great effects and scenery etc.
BUT, huge liberties were taken with the storyline. There were many, many things that are integral to the storyline that were just left in the background or mentioned as an afterthought.
I've read the books several times and was dissapointed by the film, my girlfriend has never read the books and was also disappointed as she thought the storyline was crap.
And of course balrogs have wings, in fact the books calls it a winged creature specifically

I am going to see it again as the places like Rivendell when brought to life on the screen via animation were perfect
Having re-read the book, those liberties taken were bigger than I first thought and they were ones that would not have added length to the film!!!

lol... loads of posts about a crap film
GCollier/Everyone else
...
I just didn't like it - simple as that, sure the effects and locations where good but that is expected now, it's not special anymore. Re: the story I don't care how close the film was/wasn't to the book, I just didn't rate the film...
IMHO the most enjoyable/most ground-breaking film I've seen in the last few years was The Matrix, I just don't think LOTR comes anywhere near it in terms of being an enjoyable film or story.
Perhaps LOTR is a victim of it's own hype, if it hadn't been billed as the best film ever then it wouldn't be as bad, but as it is it is very pretty, mediocre and very long (boringly long).
All IMHO of course

well I just loved it from the begining to the end.
I would say that people who didn't like it never red the book or they didn't like it. That’s why they want more fights or other stuff mentioned above.
The movie brought the whole memory of the time when I couldn't wait to get a time off to continue reading and as the movie goes as the book (mostly) I was impressed and can't wait till next part.
My favourite character must be Gandalf, that’s how I've always imagined him

you of all people should respect Star Wars... LOTR is crap, simple as that...buncho ponces
You obviously missed the joke! George Lucas isn't SHAKESPEARE. He's not HITCHCOCK. Henry Ford or for that matter Arthur C. Clark. So get a life because GEORGE certainly needs to. Who wants to be remembered for one film/series of films only.
Nice work if you can get it but very stale when you look back. Not like he's mate SPEILBERG who reinvents himself periodically each film.
I nearly forgot he was a film maker and not a one man commodity for fleecing so called fans with numerous re-releases of what is essentially the same thing each time. Attack of the clones! Very apt.

I'm with Joy - Meet the Feebles was great! I'll never forget the shock I felt at seeing two muppets humping...
Enjoyed LOTR too, going to see it again this week due to bad seats first time (front row, left hand side - made everything look odd). Haven't read the book, but all the better to see a film without the baggage and expectation of a tolkein geek from what I've read. I'll read it afterwards. Problem is if you've got a good imagination a film of a favourite book never comes out as expected. Gerard Depardieu was not how I pictured the Count of Monte Christo, that's for sure.
Sadly, I can no longer get excited about Star Wars...

Well,
I quite enjoyed the film and was not bored - i did see it in a 'Delux' cimema (reclining oh so comfy seats) loads a legroom and a proper bar so i could get a drink duing the film.
Agreed Frodo looked like a girl
Gandalf looking like Obi Wan - I think you'll find Gandalf has been around a bit longer and all aging wizards look the same don't you know.
scenary was spectaiclar, good camera work as well.
I found the book great - but a little too much detail about everything - the film got it about right
I enjoyed it and i am lookinfg forward to the other two.
