"Give me a f***** HD DVD drive or I'm going over to the PS3" will do the trick

Seriously, I got half price repair when I refused to pay the £90 they wanted saying I'd be putting towards a Wii instead. Calling them a bunch of pirates can pay dividends. If you're not agressive with them they'll know you'll back down so dont be half arsed about it.

I've read that MS have now revoked the "free repair on Pre Jan 06 Consoles" pledge?

That offer only existed for US customers anyway - it was the argument I used when mine went pop in January - typically when it was 13 months old...

Eurogamer twisted the statement in the hope that Ms would buckle under the demand from the rest of the world - they didnt, all we got was £5 knocked off the repair price.

As Messiah said, that was only ever for US customers. (am intruiged to know exactly how KiwiGTI managed to get his done under it Unless, of course, he is in the States)

Also, it was withdrawn way back in April.

As I'm a 360 Return Virgin what's the process?
Phone up MS Support obviously, but what info do they need?
Mines a launch day machine (Dec '05!) and I've erm lost the receipt
I'm guessing they'll just need the serial number off the 360 and my details?

Serial no. and your email, they'll send you some labels to stick on it when you've packaged it up. When you get it back it'll be in a special 360 shaped box - keep this box safe for the next time you have to return it... oh if only that last sentence was a joke...

Just got the email to say the 360 has been repaired and shipped, and will be back to me in 2-5 days...not too bad as it was picked up 8 days ago. Just got to see if it is my old 360 or a refurb one.

Default PS3 failure rate @ 1%

The inquisitive folks over at Ripten decided to do a little research on the failure rate of current next-gen consoles. Their conclusions should come as no surprise, with the PS3 resulting in a low failure rate. What is surprising however, is the failure rate for one console in particular appears to be higher than previously anticipated. An EB Games associate singled out the Xbox 360 console by advising "failure rates for all other consoles were not high enough for EB to consider revising their policies" further claiming the failure rate of the Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii to be "less than one percent." An EB Games manager reiterated the low failure rates of the Nintendo Wii by exclaiming that "zero [consoles] have come back defective." A Best Buy manager then went on record saying "a quarter to a third" Xbox 360 consoles sold, come back defective, confirming the 33% failure rate percentage. The methods used to determine failure rates for these consoles appear to be too elementary to really prove anything concrete. Nevertheless, this story allows us to breathe a little bit easier, as it continues to prove our console of choice can still fold like a champ and have a longer lifespan than that of its direct competition.

Didn't have much time to test the 'fix' last night (by fix just emptying the HD cache) but I did manage to do a 6 lapper, 8 lapper and a 7 lapper all in succession so maybe it has helped (my free space went up from 5gb to 8.3gb!?!)

Mine froze last night in an online race. the race was a nightmare though with dodgy connections meaning the cars were all over the place.. even flying through the air at times restarted and played free run and was fine... will keep an eye on it.

The curse of Forza 2 cuts down more 360s in their prime!

Delivery times seem to be quite random. Mine was picked up on the 5th June and still not back with no predicted delivery date yet either. They also announce on the telephone system that its now a 25 working day turn around!

Have had mine crash twice in Forza 2 now. Don't mind too much if it blows up again though because my warranty should cover me until October. Can't say I'm overly impressed though, a replacement would be my fourth console so far!!

I am told that MS have now begun 'repairing' consoles by replacing the entire motherboard and fitting both larger and additional heat-sink units. If this is true then surely the number of failures should now begin to dwindle off as this should correct the initial problem???

fair enough maybe on an intensive game like forza but i wouldnt have expected it with something as simple as bejewelled & why would it erase the save game which presumingly is on the hd. it must be a dvd drive thats causing the crashing.

Depends if its an inherent problem with the actual design of the case.
I bet it being concave doesn't exactly help matters.
Personally, I'd rather have had a slightly bigger console that incorporated the PSU and didn't have heat issues!

Wouldn't the PSU add the the heat issues?

Last night I noticed on the free runs that the DVD drive would go silent. As if it had stopped. That's not something I'd ever noticed before.

Not if the case was designed properly
Original Xbox, PS2 and PS3 all seemed to manage ok with internal PSUs.

I'd be worried if the DVD had stopped spining mate. Mine never stops spinning, bloody noisy thing!

Yeah I know... I knew it wasn't right... it better not break. I'm trying to save some cash at the mo. If this goes I'll have to go out into Leeds ever weekend getting drunk and letching at women. (break you b@stard!!)

They've just extended the warranty to 3 years in the states. The extra warranty period only covers the 3 rings problem
