I'd have a BMW in that respect then it wouldn't go wrong lol.

I do see what your saying. What would you do if the 172 went wrong?

My choice would be a Porsche 944 Turbo with MO30 Koni suspension, nice big brakes as standard, strip it out, pair of bucket seats and harnesess etc.
I had a 250Hp one tuned to 300/300 and it was very quick and they do handle fantasticly well, it would redline in 5th showing 180mph 170mph according to GPS !!

well it was a friday afternoon car. brought it brand new and was on the back of a recovery truck 6 weeks later because the gear linkage was knackered. After that most of the time i had it i was sat up the vauxhall dealership with more problems, engine managment light etc. The engine sounded like it was tapping, so it took it back to vauxhall and it was the pistons. the car was in the dealership more times than on the road.

Like the cage mate did you get it from custom cages? Have you driven it on the H&R coilovers? I had the H&R Cup Kit on my old SE, Got to say it was one of the best handling cars I've driven

The cage was from Custom cages. Now it is in it is a work of art. I would suggest 50% of the bars needed modding in some way or another. I wouldn't buy from them again.

The car hasn't done more than drive 20 yards in and out of the workshop for the past 8 months. I know the coilovers will be good as I have followed a local car with the exact same set up at the ring and it is very good.

No idea, it goes to paint in the next couple of weeks, then the rebuild starts. Once that is done we will have a look at the running gear. I would like to think it will go over this year though for sure.

Yes in deed. Back on subject.

E30 is a good tool, you can also pick up an E36 M3 for reasonable money these days too

The answer is: look what the regulars drive. Buy German is a good starting point. My recent carpark survey at the Nordschleife entrance revealed:
BMW 3 series - either E30 325/M3 or E46 M3 CSLs were everywhere. E36 models very thin on the ground.
Porsche 911 - any age, any model
VW Golf - mk2 GTi very popular, usually track prepped.
Peugeot GTi/Rallye - a few 205/106/306 knocking around.
Subaru Impreza - any age, any model
Mistubishi Lancer - Evo IV and later

And that was literally 90% of the car park. The remainder were a handful of Alfas, Clios, Skylines, Cossies, Ferraris and Audi diesels.
