i used to work for the local club pro shop as a teenager and got into playing golf , being coached by the pro.
he gave me a load of second hand clubs to choose from and basically told me to take a couple from each set and go practise. the ones that looked the best wernt the ones that i played the best golf with! hence i bought what felt and played right for me.
i suggest you try a few clubs and get a feel for what suits you

so true.My step father must have 6 drivers now and 7 putters in his quest for the 'club of dreams'.
I still tonk my 3 wood longer and straighter than his 'Big Bertha bazooma BoomBox' or whatever it is he uses.
As for clubs,I just like my Mizunos that I was given.

Well one stage closer - Pro has recommended Graphite clubs
Given me some homework - to hit 400 *****, THEN book my next lesson
(Had 6 lessons as a Birthday pressie - 2 to go)
Might even get my chequebook out next time

go hit 400 *****!!!! thats nice advice! poss go and do the wrong swing 400 times and learn bad habits!!!!
dont buy cheap clubs, you are definatly better buying a big brand thats a couple of years old, something like callaway X-14, X -16 irons, these are very forgiving and hit the ball nice and high and will give you lots of confidence. you can get these for £100-200 for a full set now second hand, just get them re gripped if needed.
i would not go for graphite in your irons mate, not the best idea at all imo, steel will be much more consistant.

I know what you're saying B8GLY,
But to be honest, my last lesson, my knowledge went through the roof, as up until now, I'd been concentrating on my leg movement/position.
I picked up some bad habits from playing tiger woods on the Wii , which my teacher sorted in 30 seconds! I was shocked in the space of 2 or 3 *****, my transfer from the back swing to front was soooo improved.
The 400 ***** is basically to put into practice what I learnt on that lesson. Been there a couple of times since, putting in 50 ***** (£2) at a time......
He also has video'd me - that's on my phone so I've got a reference to look back to when I don't remember( ie screw up a shot!) what to do.
Shaft-wise, I've never picked up a club in earnest before, so I've been using Graphite since day one, and I'm not really overly hooking or slicing the ball (not in a ridiculous manner, any way!)
Going back down later - will try some steels at the same time (got free run with several "test" sets)....
Key thing is that I'm loving it I'm just keen to take advantage of the fact that I haven't got any bad habits yet to get out of, as golf-wise, I'm a blank canvas

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo not graphite. You'll only change to steel when you become a better player and will go backwards for a while as it is so different! Dont do it!!!!!
I've been out at the Spanish open this week caddying and not one of the players was using graphite shafted irons! Even the Jap players dont use graphite anymore, which they used to swear by!
Hoskib is right, the gap between the club pro and even your average tour player is huge. Like the gap between a scratch player and a 10 handicapper, the difference between a club pro and Tiger is that of a scratch player and a 15 handicapper! He is in a different league to some of the best players in the world
BTW i saw the new Callaway prototype irons this week and they are stunning. If anyone is thinking of changing to more of a "players" club, you wont go far wrong with these when they come out
Off to Milan tomorrow for the Italian open

Mine had an altercation with a tree this weekend and is now in two pieces...

FWIW my woods are all graphite shafted (Taylor Made R5 Dual, Nike SQ 3W, Nike CPR 3 rescue) and my irons and wedges are all steel shafted (Mizuno MX-20, Mizuno MP wedges). True Temper do a lightweight steel shaft for irons that doesn't have the "dead" feeling associated with graphite.

Well, I *may* have had a bit a luck.....
I've been given a set of Wilson Firestick Golds.... less than a year old. The guy has upgraded to some Pings and said that I could have them!!
Picked em up yesterday - they look brand spanking new
Don't know how good they are, but I'm going to take em down the driving range later (my "homework" is done now - and I'm MUCH happier with my swing - shooting em long and straight. Just need to work on the consistency)
Any thoughts on these - knowing you lot, they're cr@p
