my sister has an MGF and loves it

i have had to do the head gasket, which wasn't as bad as i thought, but she didn't cook the engine like most do, if your loosing water don't keep driving it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
people drive things till they stop, rather than checking under the bonnet once a week,
other than the engine its been ok, the rear tyres wear off the inside, which is another trait and are not cheap!!!
did you know that the MGF is 2 metro's put together
yep, its a metro 100% from front to back of seats, then rover got the front end of another metro and stitched it on the back with the engine in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so if you need brakes, steering, ball joints etc, take off the part and go to your local carspares shop and ask for a metro part much cheaper
i had to replace the steering rack, rover price, £275
so i thought its a metro , took it off went to local shop and asked for a metro recon rack £30 , exact match
is still on the car 2 years later, spot on

Good choice.
MX5.
I know each to their own and MGF is a reasonable looking car.
But just purely from an objective point of view. The MX5 is one of the best cars ever built.
1.It is a great drive. Handling and gear box are sweet
2. It is bullet proof - The engine was origionaly designed to take a turbo. You can massively increase the BHP on stock internals, gearbox etc. That is how overengineered they are. Fantastic. They are underpowered - stick supercharger in one and you have a Q car bullet on your hands.

watch out for water ingress comming in from the bottom of the car into the sills that run underneath the doors towards the front. Needs draining and re-sealing

Handbrake rear calipers tend to stick and need replacing.

There is smething else - but mind is a blank . Will post if I remember

Nice one Steve, good to hear!

I'm well impressed with it as standard at the mo. Concentrating on the interior to start with... then time to play with the important bit!!

If you want to upgrade the power then let me know and I can point you in the right direction. Performance 5 are good and reasonably priced.

But 5s are all about the drive - not the power.
Is it an Import or a UK? As if it is an import you may need a cubby box for the inside.

My mind is still blank..Duh there was something that went on earlier cars but I cant for the life of me remember

Might be you had the crankshaft problem of the very early cars in mind: Miata Crankshafts

And as already mentioned, rust in the sills below the doors is very common, check this out before it gets expensive. Spark wires need to be changed every 50000 km or so, even when they look fine, they die of engine heat.
Standard shocks usually are dead at around 80000 km, yellow Konis are the common replacement here in Germany, they last a lot longer and can be adjusted.

Owing one for about 10 years and more than 200000 km I completely agree that the MX-5 is pure fun. Apart from a new top the only money I've spent on it was for power and handling mods, but this can be a real money pit.
