Boiling water softens the letters glue ready for pulling off but it sometimes leaves a bit of sticky glue behind, you can get this off with petrol, nail varnish remover etc. Boiling water is safe, I used to work in a body shop many years ago and that is what I was shown, used it ever since.
After taking the letters off you may have marks were the paint has faded around them, polishing will remove these. I had to use an electric polisher and compound on mine you may not need anything other than a polish with auto gleam etc.
