Theorhetically, yes. In pratice there is little difference between HDMI and VGA or Component. However, you are opening up the choice of displays. You will find many more displays that have HDMI than Component in, especially the cheaper displays.
However, of course HDMI, really, is all about DRM rather than optimal picture.

Why on earth they didn't include built-in wireless I don't know. Well I do, actually, why build in something when you can charge for it seperatley?

C&P. . . .

Q. What are the advantages of HDMI over existing analog interfaces such as composite, S-Video and component video?

Quality: HDMI transfers uncompressed digital audio and video for the highest, crispest image quality.

All-Digital: HDMI ensures an all-digital rendering of video without the losses associated with analog interfaces and their unnecessary digital-to-analog conversions.

Low-cost: HDMI provides the quality and functionality of a digital interface while also supporting uncompressed video formats in a simple, cost-effective manner.

Audio: HDMI supports multiple audio formats, from standard stereo to multi-channel surround-sound.
Ease-of-use: HDMI combines video and multi-channel audio into a single cable, eliminating the cost, complexity, and confusion of multiple cables currently used in A/V systems.

Intelligence: HDMI supports two-way communication between the video source (such as a DVD player) and the DTV, enabling new functionality such as automatic configuration and one-touch play.

Makes absolute sense to me. Why tie yourself to outdated wireless standards that will no doubt change over the next couple of years?

MS have been smart by giving option to upgrade & evolve rather than forcing the consumer to take what they think is best.

Indeed. I wouldn't want wireless in the machine anyway. It's hopeless for streaming HD content (it's too slow). Wired ethernet (which is what I use) is much quicker. Best keep wireless an optional extra for people who actually want it, and keep the cost of the base console down.

don't you like games? I'm loving some of them on the 360. Gears of War I love, Raindow 6 is great, Pro Evo on live is class, Lost Planet is a blast, Fight Night v's mates and a few beers is quality for banter.

If people say there are no decent games on the 360 then I don't think they've tried one for any length of time.

too many gruppy old 30 somethings out there these days.

Of course the problem with this answer is that even if they built in wireless capability (you know, like every laptop you can buy, plus PSP and Wii and DS and PS3 and Pocket PC's etc etc) they could still release a dongle that would take on any new standard.

Instead they decide not to include wireless so they can still charge for the overpriced wireless adapter.

Well, it doesn't really add much in the way of cost. On board it's as cheap as chips.

Agreed, playing it on PS3 last night and confess to being fairly uninspired.

Does the PS3 have an ethernet port as well as wifi? Wireless is just too slow for HD streaming, (plus it's slower for downloading stuff etc). Personally I think wireless network stuff is pretty useless in any console being touted as a media hub...

That's good, (I'd only seen mention of the wireless stuff so wasn't sure).

I still maintain that the wireless stuff is pointless, so the MS approach of making it optional is a good thing. If Sony had done the same, they could have afforded to put an hdmi cable in the box

Agreed, wireless is woeful for multi media such as streaming HD as you mention. I wouldn't have used it if it was included. Hard wired all the way

That maybe ok in Yank land but here where most ISP's have usage caps, this just isn't going to happen!

Fair enough, if you have an unlimited connection you should be ok, but even so, streaming everything all the time will use a lot of bandwidth and even 'unlimited' providers will soon send you a nice little letter

A little bit off topic by now. When will the Elite come out in Europe? I know it's April for the USA and Canada. I am thinking about getting one because currently I am on the 3rd Xbox 360 and I am hoping that the Elite will be more reliable besides the quieter optical drive and the other neat stuff. I know that it is pretty bad giving one system a 4 chances but I still love this system as on the 1st day. Does anybody know when PAL is coming out and if there is (next to the HDMI connection) also a regular component cable. I am planning to upgrade my current TV to a new HDTV around christmas this year.

We don't know the launch date for Europe yet, we do have the prices ... announced in the official press release yesterday: 479.99eur/349.99gbp.

* Gizmodo: You did change the DVD drive, didn't you, so that it's quieter?
* Penello: What's interesting is, that was a rumor that was going around that's also interesting in its propagation, but the reality is, we have several different manufacturers of DVD drives, and people claim that they believe that they've heard ones that are quieter, which is interesting, because I don't really know anything about that.

The HDMI socket is in addition to the current regular analogue output.

LOL i thought the same

i`m still playing call of duty 2

just finished the British stuff, and only have the yanks left to complete
must say i have had the 360 suffer from some serious slowdown at times playing this, doing stuff "to quickly"

ie: instead of picking off the jerrys properly i just run on in with a big gun and loads of smoke grenades

You missed your gp2x didnt ya?

Just followed the link to that page, 360 looks cool in black but it mentions no wi-fi, is that right? 360 doesn't have wi-fi? Surely a missed opportunity there.
