Just got receipt of my Natioanl B licence application. Hopeinmg to do the May 6th Sprint at RAF Bentwaters which is the new Japanese Sprint Championship.

After researching the regs a bit more, seems the best for me is to stick to 1a tyres in the road going class, as my car is not too modified and still retains a full interior.

Can't wait

Full report is required!
That series looked good to me as does the Jap Intermarque Series forming.

What have you stickered up for Graham?

How has your clutch lasted so long, mine was toast after 12 meetings, first 10 with 300hp?

The Midland sprint series I have entered has a round at Barkston heath, has anyone ever heard of it before or more importantly driven it?

Never heard of that one Rob. Where is it?
AP clutch has been through about 140+ starts! @ 312/380 bhp and 3 sets of Kumho's, and hopefully slicks...
I've stickered-up for the people who have helped me with services/support and the dreadful Midland Hillclimb 'Roundel'

So I suppose I should contact Carling, Fosters and Becks for some decals for their continued support.

It's in Nottingham, there are no class records according to the regs so I guess it's a new one.

The HSA does a round at Barkston, see if there's anything on their 'site...........

ps. I'm using a 4 paddle from a company called techniclutch - going alright so far and it's had some abuse and a fair amount of torque through it. Fraction of the cost of AP, Exedy etc, worth a look? This is the one.......

And there was I thinking quickracks don't grow on trees. Obviously I was wrong? Where can such a tree be found?

Graham.

This round is part of the Jap Intermarque one, basically its piggy backing sprint rounds in the Eastern and Midlands Championships if I remember correctly.

I shall report back, I just need top get a new helmet and some overalls now. Not got teh blue book but thats what I have been told.

Was thinking of just some Proban overalls to start with.

Also, can you recommend any decent helmets, not after full WRC (read expensive spec) but am wary of the £60ish clubman ones, are these any good or is it best to stump up a bit more??

Cheers

Logan

The MLR hosted a Sprint there last year, the report from people I know that went are very good, and the course looks spot on, lots of tight corners but lots of run off.

have a read through this, might help

blacky:
It's your head!
Having been in a heavy hillclimb crunch some time ago in my 911 I hit my hat on the roll cage! Fractured the case (cheap hat)

The £180 Sparco I bought after is much lighter and is great (open face).
If the car was open, then pay all you can!

As to overalls: I like the 3 layer nomex ones, strangly cool in the summer/warm on the cold ones.
Above all get the right one in the Blue Book, and remember that the Scrut's need to label it first (another £5) before you can race.

Richard:
What a great report on Loton

Managed to crash a party of testing at Bruntingthorpe tommorow with some well known monster cars that will reduce me to a mobile chicane, that should give some indication of the nature of the other cars testing when a 420bhp 1150kgs short ratioed car is much, much, much slower than the others. I'll post my pics and findings up here tomorrow if I haven't been sucked up into the intake of one of the other cars!

In this game even though I am really new the one thing that is apparent in the paddock is that you will only buy 1 helmet and 1 race suit, so you might as well make it a good one, and as Graham rightly said it's your head. I drove to Demon Tweeks to get my safety gear because nothing I have ever bought without trying first (Race seats included) has been anything like it was advertised as, or fitted correctly. So it is worth getting it right first time, and if you pack it up, well the better gear will fetch a better 2nd hand resale price.

I too drove up tp DT to try it all on before buying, including seats and especially important to get a helmet that fits well.

If you buy all in one go, you should get discount anyway - I did. I believe you can also get discount with race lisence? The Proban isn't as 'long lasting' as nomex and tends to be worn more by marshals. You should get a good suit for about £100 and I think I paid about £200 for a full face Bell helmet.
Don't forget your boots and gloves.

Give Gareth (01978 663006) a call at Demon Tweeks and say I recommended you call him - I'm sure he'll help you out.

Rob, that stuff I posted any good for you?

Graham, im in need of help! I lost my speed national A license as you know at the loton practice day. The next day i was on the phone and also sent a letter requesting a new one. MSA phoned me the next day to confirm my card details and tell me that it was being sent express handleing, i still have no license and not even a temp license. I called them today after work and asked where the **** my license is!?! after a short argument the bloke said he would fax me a temp one, still nothing! im now into the bank holiday and have no license! Am i going to have to pay another 45 quid per day? or is there a way of proving i do have a license?

Default Safety gear

AWS in Kent (search on net) do made to measure Nomex very cheaply and they last well, in any design or colour.

Helmets should be the most expensive you can afford.

I have full face with visor since my pal crashed through a barbed wire fence. The fence post came in through the screen and went out through the back window. The open face helmet stopped him having too much of a face lift, full face and he wouldnt have a permanent 'smile' on his face now poor bloke....think long and hard!

Pete:

You will find yourself in the same position!
No license: fine or no racing.

Get to Loton early on Sun. Find Jim Gazey who is the Clerk of the Course, who will find the MSA Steward. It is the Steward that fines you, not Hagley.
Bring EVERYTHING with you to show payments whatever.
The issue is insurance via the MSA. Someone without a license would be without insurance unless cover is arranged, The Fine.

This is not a slap on the wrist issue, it is cover.
I think there is post on Sat? If so, you may be lucky?

Otherwise, bring that cheque book I'm afraid.
These are the rules as I know them, and could be wrong. Being up to be fined for a second time will not be seen well. Bring everything you can.

Graham.

Be nice to think so Rob, that's why i say get there early, see the right people and take everything.
Pete: You should have the email from MSA acknowledging reciept of your documents/payment. A print-out of that is crucial.
The Steward can verify with the MSA if the application is in, has been processed etc. Do you have the number of last year's license? Take that too as it should be the same for 2007.
Cool, calm and firm approach is needed.

Get to it all early, about 8.30am when Jim arrives.(in case: Big Bloke, drives white A6, about my age)

Graham
You only sign on once fo the meeting of course, so at worse one fine.

I have a 2007 temp license that was only valid till the end of feb, msa sent it before i got my photo card one because of the back log, will that help i know its not valid but it proves i have a 2007 license with my number on. I also have the receipt email off the msa. Who knows post tomorrow may show up yet!!!

Got my car back today, new clutch twin plate carbon clutch, a massive exhaust which i could fit my head up, not my thing but i have 440lb-ft of torque now with new map so its staying on. Couldnt afford the slicks so still on the crappy rubber, need to work harder! All the fluids changed, brakes checked, ready for a season of racing! wooooo

I think with that lot you will be ok, depends on the steward!
I also think you will have a major chance of taking the fight to the AUDI, and I sincerely hope you do just that.
I will be very happy to bag 5th in class over the weekend!

See you all there!

Tagged along to Bruntingthorpe today which had been booked out for the setting up of my Dad's new racer, only problem is it still isn't ready and could not run. So it was just Paul from Zen and I there with the track to ourselves.

This was my first outing with my new suspension courtesy of sponsorship from Zen performance. Paul has fitted to my car a set of exe-tc competition coilovers which with his skills of negotiation were specificaly built by exe-tc to suit sprinting and hillclimbing. The spring rates have come down to 53.5 front 49 rear and the car immediatley felt more compliant and the extra grip in the tighter corners was instantly noticeable. After trying some corners with the diffs run up strong like i would at Loton there was a little under steer at first which after Paul messing around with the 40 damper settings he managed to make totaly dissapear and the car felt great. Obviously the track surroundings were a million miles from what the car will be used for and as a result not a great place to try and get the suspension set up for hillclimbing, but when your car is not road legal like mine any time in the drivers seat at this early stage of the season is great and getting tuned into throwing the car about and judging how it will react and where it's limits are can only help.

The car as ever is extremley quick and not suited for long open track driving as I hit top speed at several parts of the track, 150mph if the speedo is to be beleived, and had to just back off, wait, and just chuck it through the 2 tightest corners which I can only compare to a long fast corner in hillclimbing. Paul also got the lap top on it and got it to hold some more boost at top end and run smoother.

My car now looks like it has been in a 24 hour endurance race and track driving is a tyre wrecking, brake killing experience so tomorrow will be spent trying to make it look respectable and get it stickered up and ready for Sunday at the first event of the midland championships at Loton park. I am also 100% going to get my wheels sprayed black or anthracite as you only have to look at them for them to get filthy and cleaning them is a monster of a job.

Highlight of the day for me was Paul letting me drive his car as he was setting it up for his time attack event this weekend. Words cannot describe the speed of that thing, 650bhp and 1100kgs I simply could not get my head round how fast it is, and also how easy to drive, like my car just harder to get in and out of and a stiffer clutch/gear change. It would make a serious hillclimb and sprint weapon especially on the right rubber.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank Paul for his support so far and especially today, he has taken a genuine interest in the car and the sport and it shows when he puts in all the extra time off his own back to try and get the most out of the car. It's getting very good now and I am going to need to get some excuses together if I cannot get some good times out of it!

Check out my new gear at Welcome to exe-tc Competition Suspension

Also the company that kindly sponsored me Zen Performance Zen Performance - Performance upgrade solutions for Japanese cars

I drove this Wooooo0000ooo Hoo00!

Rob.

Fantastic!
You can chase your bother now!
Such a shame your dad's Quattro is not done though, but hope it can be done for tomorrow?
Off to Loton now to do more track side work, never ends....
See you there.

Pete's car is a bit serious now and will take some catching, it looks and sounds great and is a perfect advert for what the class should be like if common sense prevailed.

Dad has gone to collect it today, but you never know, he was told 2 weeks build time in october '06 so I'm not holding out too much hope.

After getting so many runs last time out it will be strange getting just 4 runs over 2 days and there is not much room for error, I will be happy if i can creep into the 58's again, I think my launches will govern my times as out of 11 I only got 1 right last time but that was the last one so I hope I have found a formula that works.

Looking forward to it and hope the weather stays like this.

58's?
Never.
I was at the track today doing yet more signs, and the surface is a peach.
Even the Jaguar felt fast! (not practicing of course)
57/56? yes I think so for you and Pete and Roy.

The start time is not everything, but i know what you mean by it's effect.

You still got those AST springs?(the 40's to be exact)
I need to get serious with the setting of those 3 ways, so that will be the order of the day/weekend while you lot slug it out at the top.

Has Keith E got his Quattro?

I really want to see Roy lane's turbo powered 911!

See you all bright and early.

Those kind of times will be nice but my car will behave very diffrently to the last time I was there and I just hope I can adapt/take advantage of the new set up in 2 practice runs.

The AST springs I originaly ran were 60/50's which have gone back onto the shocks to sell.

Keith Edwards has his Quattro and my Dad has this

650bhp 901kgs

Catch you in the morning!
