Just waiting for Saker to get the conversion kits in, sounds like it will be next week hopefully when I can order.
Apart from that looking around for a box. The late and early 5sp boxes (thanks for the dims for early) should be ok. Ideal one would be good main box and front diff, and duff centre diff which I don't need, at the right price

To get the car sorted you can privatly hire a full sprint track TO YOURSELF.
The track is at Curborough near Fradley off the A38 going to Burton on Trent.
The game is to get others to join you to spread the cost, you can have up to 5 (for noise reasons).
Cost is £250 so about 50 each.
This is 3 or 4 hours track time all to the group, and it can be driven in 2 directions so the variety is great for suspension/fun.
3 hours will knacker you and the car I assure you.
I'm doing one very very soon with 3 of us, all hillclimbers so we know each other and will respect track time too.
pm for tele number if you want to enquire about hiring it.
It is VERY popular indeed so plan ahead.

just kidding! ive had never touched a welder in my life untill i started this project, i just followed the instructions, lol. the welder is a gas Clarke 150 amp fan cooled. Its pretty good ive been doing alot of constant welding, its meant to be wired strait to the mains with a 20 amp supply but ive just put a plug on it and avoided the highest setting,i got it from machine mart at £200, seems a good price to me it can weld plate up tp 6mm thick.

Bloody hell, for someone who has never used a welder before your project started, all i can say is well done mate that is very good work.

I've seen welding on thin stuff from people who are allegedly professionals that isn't as good as your recent stuff
The least said about your early efforts, the better though
I don't know about everyone else, but I'm dying to see this project completed

Great project, very ambitious.
As for your TMIC air feed, i know a guy who has a front engined MK1 golf, 4wd, but no room for a front mount, so its in the rear of the car with air scoops in the rear side windows.
He does 10 sec 1/4s so can't affect it that much.

Certainly meant no disrespect.
Normally, MIG's are difficult to use (continuouisly) on body metalwork unless it is a specialist unit from Snap-On etc hence the question.
Very good going, you have mastered the 'touch' well to say the least.
You must soon be ready for the tricky bits, the loom, exhaust and cooling?
Looking forward to the pictures you are obviously storing up for us!

My project has slowed down a bit now as ive got the keys to my new house and its an even bigger project as ive had to totally strip it all out so it needs a rewire, new plumbing,plastering, windows etc so im spending most my time on that, i'll try and find a few hours to work on the car though over the weekend

Hats off for the welding skills, i was nervous about welding some stuff up but you have dived in at the deep end and it's worked.
I may have a little more courage now to try it myself, rather than rely on others.

Hi mate, no probbs, that looks ok to me but i dont know enough about welders to tell you for definite, it is 170 amps which is more than enough power the only thing is that you havn't got any gaurentee with it.

wow mate your project is wicked im tempted to start one myself i have found a vw beetle for £125 might get it and mount a legacy lump in it but its just finding time i will keep you posted if the misses lets me lol

Bit of an update ive managed to steel a few hours.. ive finished and painted the engine bay and bolted the engine and box in place...
this is what ive replaced the steering rack with..
My mate enginered me these with tapered holes so i can fit ball joints to them and connect to the ball joints on the hubs
J I C coilovers..

Hi James, I managed to get the wrx motor sat in my Spyder yesterday. once I leveled it on the hoist it was really easy to drop in. Took a wheel off one side then fed the engine in from there. Not sure I will use the stainless bellmouth it fouls the De-Dion axle, a case of either cutting and sectioning it to another angle using a twin-dump one made to fit.

so does the engine sit on the origional mounts on the car? looks like it does in the pic, its a shame about the bellmouth if you do want to sell it though i will prob buy it off you as i need something like that, could you post up a pic of it.
have you had a better measure now the engine is in place to see wheather the box with miss the De-Dion axle?

The motor sits on the rubber mounts, but a new crossmember was made up to sit the engine on. Should be ok for the box from the dimensions I have taken, if not some notching to the De Dion will be required..

Ive fabricated a foam filled cell to sit my alloy fuel tank inside, the tank itself seems very thin so i thought this would be a good idea..
And made some stainless straps to hold the rad in place..
Ive knocked up a temporary exhaust so i can get it running..
oh and i nearly forgot this gearbox mount..
