I was very close to getting a 94 GTS R32 (can't remember 100%) coupe. I went up to see it, i wasn't overly impressed with the look of the car. The guy assured me 2dr's of this year were rare but when driving it I was very aware i was driving a big car, i was quite intimidated (and i drive Luton's all day ). The thing that stopped it for me was the price and insurance. Most insurers wouldn't touch me without at least 2 yrs no claims, and i was terrified if i actually found one that would what they would want although i believe they are group 20?. The guy wanted £4.5k and wasn't budging for a 12yr old car.
I'm a qualified motorbike mechanic and i'd like to one day buy a 4-wheeled heap, engine out and rebuild from scratch with decent components so it sounds like maybe money permitting i'd be best off with a later skyline/supra as a base strong bottom end. The idea of doing so with an impreza scares me as it doesn't sound as though they have a good base bottom end to start with. Whenever you tend to see these "1000BHP" tuned by top secret or the likes they tend to be Skylines or Supra's.
After testing the skyline i moved on to 300zx's, which for me personnaly i wanted a manual twin turbo and again for a 12yr old car was pretty shocked at how much they were fetching. So i moved on to Supra's and again found myself wanting the manual twin-turbo but my bank manager really wasn't impressed.

I was lucky enough to drive a r34 gtr on the weekend and for 500bhp it didn't feel quicker then my type ra and by the time the boost kicked in my type ra would have been gone.
Once above 4000rpm they came to life but i expected better, then again they do weight a lot.

What is it with the weight....They are not 2 ton barges...

Autocar tested an R34 GTR with timing gear in 1999.
It was the quoted 276bhp ( but they said it felt more like 320bhp which is what they are generally acknowledged to have as standard )
0-100 in 10.8 seconds - that's very quick.

ive driven a few skylines standard and none standard as my mate owns
MGT Racing which speacialise in importing and tuning skylines
they are brilliant cars on and off the track and can handle some serious power but i still think supra's edge over skylines as they are that little bit stronger when pushed to the limit of tune and look much better
(only slightly biased as i use to own a supra)
i had the pleasure of owning a fast supra with real credentials although it cost me an arm and a leg i never stopped smiling when ever i drove it , in fact i just had to look at it to put a grin on my face.
it was a manual running a single turbo (T6 T51R) it was running 735BHP @ 1.75bar
last time i checked its still 5th on the supra owner club fastset ever supras and 3rd fastest on the 60ft times of 1.62secs
quarter mile in 11.647 secs @ 124.45mph
60ft- 1.620secs
330ft- 4.631secs
1/8et 7.124secs, 1/8- 98.58mph
0-60 in 2.5secs
and as you can see from above 0-100 in just over 7secs

i dont think its fair to compare ra and gtr, different beasts, i had an r33 gtr 550bhp and not just an estimated figure rolling roaded proof!!!, the gtr would and did leave my 350 bhp sti3 on any straight what so ever BUT if it gets b road twisty its bye bye gtr, impreza is going to edge ahead both in the speed attainable and in the fun had driving it

500bhp r34 GTR move like **** off a greasy shovel, and an amazing car, how DARE you even try compare an STi Type RA to one! Even in standard form they are very quick, nice and tunable, easy enough to get to about 380-400bhp, after that it can be pricey alright, id have my supra over one any though

Skylines are the Daddy, but you would still rather have a Supra
A 350 BHP STI RA is going to be no slouch, how DARE you suggest otherwise. A 500BHP Skyline is going to outperform it, but it wouldn't be in another planet like you suggest.

I owned an R34-GTR, standard when I got it and modified through middlehurst nissan to around 420bhp. This was far more expensive to do than you might imagine and many other components needed replacing in addition, giving the impression that they aren't as bullet proof as some might say. I had it as a weekend car and in 3 years only drove it around 9,000miles, I would say that during this time I probably easily spent £15k on it and in the end it wasn't really worth this expense although it was the most fun car I have owned. (pics have been posted before along with my current Forrester Sti)
I have now ordered a new A line type 25 and quite frankly the performance of this is leagues ahead of the similarly powered skyline I had and I think it could easily hold its own against 600bhp skylines (apart from top speed)

Don't expect any car to be "bulletproof" if you are running more power than the warranted factory standard.
500 BHP engine may be "bulletproof" on some random yank rolling road that lasts 20 seconds, but not so bulletproof with 3 hours of hard cross country driving.

T88 turbo, built 2.8 R32 GTR...... once the car hit 5500 revs thought I was going into orbit... quite possibly the fastest car I will experience...
Find a good built one and pay the extra for a nice example
Better have deep pockets regardless (stock / modded) tho...
