But how can you possibly comment on how realistic the physics are unless you have experience of what the real physics are actually like

What you are saying is you enjoy the handling model that the game provides. That doesn't mean it is realistic. It just means that you like that style of gameplay.

Its the fact that the steering and 'feel' when the back end goes out or understeers into a corner is far more realistic than any other console driving game and how much control you get over it.
Which you cannot possibly know unless you have driven a car to the limit and made the back end step out etc. For example, I've quite happily used heavy braking in GT4, and kept the brake on whilst steering around tight bends. If you did this in a real car you'd be off sightseeing...

No one is saying its perfect, only that it is very good for a game.
I never said you did say it's perfect. However, it is a "enjoyable" driving model that people enjoy using in a game rather than an accurate representation of what a car really drives like. Try driving GTR with all the driver aids turned off. That's a much closer representation

Are you saying that doing the things needed to make the back end of a car step out or counter steer a slide and control the throttle so it doesn't spin don't work in the GT games?
I never said that at all. I simply said that I've got a lot of experience of driving a number of cars on track (both road cars and race prepared), and the handling of the same cars in GT doesn't even come close to be being the same. For a start GT doesn't take into account things like grip levels, weather, tyre wear, weight distribution, fuel loads etc, all of which can have a massive effect on the handling

I also never said that you couldn't counter a slide etc in GT. What I said was that you could do things with the car in GT that just aren't physically possible in a real car. Even Jeremy Clarkson admitted this a year or two ago when he did an episode of Top Gear comparing the game with the real thing, (I think at Laguna Seca, although I could be wrong). He came to the conclusion that the game was nothing like the real thing...

It's a fun game, it's not a simulation.

There are mistakes. The BMW M3 CSL, for instance, brakes much better on the road than it does on the screen. And there’s no way a Peugeot 106 could outdrag a Fiat Punto off the line. But other than this, I’m struggling: they’ve even managed to accurately reflect the differences between a Mercedes SL 600 and the Mercedes SL 55, which is hard enough to do in real life.

There’s more, too. If you take a banked curve in the Bentley Le Mans car flat out, you’ll be fine. If you back off, even a little bit, you lose the aerodynamic grip and end up spinning.

That’s how it is. This game would only be more real if a big spike shot out of the screen and skewered your head every time you crashed

What Clarkson said on top gear is that the fear factor comes into play when doing the real thing. He used it as in illustration of the difference between racing drivers and mere mortals. He also used a slightly different car in the Top Gear test.

He actually rates the game highly in the realism stakes.

That's true, however he also said that the track layout was different to that in the game, and that the handling of the car was very different in certain areas (mostly in the braking department).

Personally I don't believe any journalists, especially Clarkson. He's an entertaining chap, but most of what he says is done purely to provoke a reaction (so people will read his newspaper column) or depends on which company is paying him or taking him on corporate lunches this week. I certainly wouldn't take what he says as gospel

All I know is that the cars I have driven on track (and on rally stages) handle nothing like those same cars in the GT games (or Forza). So I fail to see how those games can be called realistic. Personally I just think they are entertaining

And yes, I am still looking forward to Forza 2. Hopefully the next GT on PS3 will be good, but there's a bit of a wait for that one (end of next year if reports are to be believed)...

Plus, how can you mark any game high in the realism stakes when there is so much that the engine doesn't model?

for what its worth i used to be a GT fanboy

loved the games, thought they were very real IMO

but after plugging the DFP wheel in the PC and getting well and truley hooked on LFS for the second time around, the steering wheel has not been plugged into the PS2 ever scince.

tried a few other PC games, RFactor = never liked this at all, crazy physics nothing like a real car, GTR 1/2 i could never get away with these, not sure why, to me the cars never felt like they were on the tarmac

went back to GT4 a few times, but lost intrest soooo fast, the cars just felt wrong, like the tyres were not modeled or something?

tried a few others on the 360, PGR graphics are quite nice, but the game just never hooked me, like i said i played for a few hours, and had enough cash to buy the crazy ferrari that costs the most cash, after that i couldnt work out what was the point of playing, i made enough to buy all the ferrari cars just to get some achievement points but it was not "fun"

i will probably spend a bit of time selling them and buying the other cars just for the points, and then sell the game ?

TDU i did quite like the bikes part, except when i crashed into the cars trying to do wheelies

this was in the demo, i have heard the real game has different controls, but i wont be buying it.

has the xbox steering wheel got force feedback and such?

I really couldn't see what the fuss was all about wit the GT games, although I suppose it was the most realistic driving game on the PS2. That doesn't mean it behaves realistically though

The GTR games on the PC had a far better driving model, (as did Forza on the old xbox, although that was still pretty arcadey).
Forza physics are complete and utter trash. You can drift FWD cars like RWD cars for gods sake. Wwhen it comes to console racers Gran Turismo is easily the daddy.

I've done the same thing in GT. They are both pretty rubbish where accurate handling is concerned. At least forza makes some attempt at damage / wear & tear handling which the GT arcade games don't.

To me, forza handling is alot more arcade, than GT. You can powerslide any car with ease in forza, however in GT you couldnt. And cars that were historically known to be good drifters in real life, were also the the best in GT.

I tried the last GT and I too thought the way the cars drove handled was a bag o'****e and the game totally over-rated.

Forza was soooo much better. Plus, the 'ring in Forza was much more realistic.

A video of me doing GT4 in Sim mode, worth watching for some decent car control as i am using the Logitech wheel in full 900degree mode

Treated the car like a real Scoob with Sim Tyres and proper settings in the suspension, diff and gearing dept.

I like the much mailigned Enthusia for out and out realistic drifting with the wheel.

Hope Forza really rocks and not a pile of over hyped poo

So i need to spend another 18quid to be able to upgrade to Hardcore mode on TDU, well thats just craptastic

So how do mortals do 3 screens on their 360? Or is there a PC version of Forza on the way?

Forza 2 supports multiple screens as did Forza 1. The problem is that you need multiple consoles as well as screens. But the good thing is that you can have a complete 360 degree setup if you have enough kit
