My two theories :

1. It's not true and this is all propaganda and lies.
2. It is true, in which case it's too late to do anything as the population of the world is too big and we all want the good life.

I think number two is nearer reality. On one of these numerous documentaries on Global Warming, the point was made that to a large extent the damage has been done - by reducing emmissions we would affect the climate that our grandchildren live in, but there would be little immediate effect !

If the main cause of global warming is orbital variation, then the only way we can stop it is by stopping the earth from wobbling on its axis. So maybe a few strategically placed nukes set off in sequence might be the cure. Yeah right, I can just see the headlines, "nukes to be set off in London, New York, Moscow, Tokyo etc to halt the advance of global warming".

No, lets all just pay "green" taxes instead.

Or maybe I'm just being facetious.

I agree with that Andy, but regardless of the immediate effect as far as we are concerned, I think we should think of our future descendants and at least leave them a world which is inhabitable.

Can i ask one simple question.

How many of the people who've admitted they don't give a toss here actually have children? Are there parents on here who will admit they're doing nothing to inform their kids of the possibility that global warming might be a problem?

Anybody?

Is it only me that finds the following strange?

If there is one subject on here that everyone agrees on it is the well being of their children. Basically, people would do pretty much anything to protect them (and so they should). And yet, the possibility exists that we may be completely screwing the planet for them and for their children, and people couldn't care less and dismiss it with very little insight of knowledge.

Why do humans need to have kids before they (sometimes) realise what selfish eejits they're actually being?

Having kids certainly gives you a different outlook on life, but I'm sure that some of the people posting here that they don't give a t*ss about the planet's future, are parents who would die before something happened to their child.

I also don't think they have *quite* the same influence on the policies of their governments, Rich. Sadly. I have no idea about Chinese pulic information at all, but i'd like to think that all the available evidence isn't actively concealed from the general population, or glossed over as it doesn't sit comfortably their shockingly wasteful building programme of coal-fired power stations.

Get up and make a nice cup of tea (using elecricity from coal/gas/nuclear/maybe alternatives if lucky)

Get in scoob and go to work a few 10s of miles away (burning excessive fuel, probably no passengers)

Turn on PC (using elecricity from coal/gas/nuclear/maybe alternatives if lucky)

and whinge about another country wishing to develop itself...

LOL

3. Tony Blair taxes us just in case

The logical conclusion using this line of thinking is to get rid of the rain forests and scrap 'green' taxes
How does that work then? Thought trees removed CO2 and replaced it with oxygen? Cutting down forests would make it worse.

How anyone can say that pumping clouds of crap into the air makes it not our fault amazes me. Has to be a significant factor at least. Facts are there that most of this comes from non renewable sources so unless something happens then there will be an issue. Basically its all because we want £4 jeans from China.

Agree its a cycle and i think things will be done but simple things like... every new house has a solar panel would be a good start.

At the end of the day the planet will be here long after we aren't.

Global Warming may well be happening but I don't believe mankind has much to do with it. What I do know is that it follows the classic patterns of screwing very considerable amounts of money by taking a little from a very considerable percentage of the population. It goes like this:

* Some nutcash makes a controversial suggestion
* Lot of people laugh
* He tries to prove his theory and usually 'dissapears' :suspicious:
* Dust settles, all is quiet!
* A few more peeps stick their heads above the parapet and a minority group of believers are formed
* Over the years the voice that group has grows and full blown debate emerges
* 'Evidence' is presented from both sides but nobody ever has anything conclusive
* The Government realises this isn't going away and looks to seize the opportunity
* Suddenly government employed scientists 'prove' the theory
* Population education (I prefer to call it brainwashing) begins over a number of years
* General opinion changes to the degree that if you don't subscribe to the theory you are frowed upon
* A new means of dealing with the problems created by the theory is drawn up by government and it usually involves taxation
* It's all brushed under the carpet when its finally proven to be total B.S.

There are variations on these steps but you can be rest assured that Governments follow this pattern on pretty much anything. Y2k, WMD's, etc, etc.

Y2k is another classic example:

* Oh hell, we have a problem
* LOL, don't panic - these Y2k guys are crazy
* Time passes
* Well actually they may have a point
* Government: everyone, you must upgrade this and that to be Y2k proof
* Panic
* Mass upgrade spending
* 31st Dec 1999, 11:59:59 - fear
* 1st Jan 2000, 00:00:01 - hmmm, nothing
* Sweep up job

The main cause of global warming is said to be caused by the burning of carbon based fuels eg. gas, coal and oil.

At the rate we are using these resources, they ain't going to last long. I've heard oil will run out in about 100 years or so. Gas and coal wouldn't be far off either.

So when it all runs out, no more carbon emissions caused by humans. Cows farts maybe, but not us. End of problem.

On another note while the rest of the world kills itself by reducing emissions as much as possible, China and America (Bush, tosser) will not commit themselves to any type of emission reductions. How the hell do they get away with this?

Y2K was a completely different scenario. The fact that there was a huge amount of spending was why when Jan 1 00:00:01 came round nothing happened.

It is that that drives the climate here on good ol' earth!

Dave

PS: I do care about generally NOT polluting the environment, using less energy/water (mainly to save me money!), etc

What if your kid asks you why you're being so selfish with respect to the environment and its resources? What will you tell him to justify your pattern of behaviour?

Aaaaaand your bank account/gas/electricity/water/credit card/retailers......?
They were all 'fine' because of the major effort that went into making sure all the systems behind them worked.

I'm not being brainwashed by anyone. In fact i'd go so far as to say that i'm being open-minded enough to believe that it's NOT just a New Labour conspiracy, even though i think they're by and large the biggest bunch of fcukwits we've had in British politics for many a year.
But we've been here before. Personally i always find it an eye-opener that there are people who - in my opinion - squander the Earth's resources as if it's their birthright or something. I'm alright Jack, they've proved squat-all, why do i have to change anything unless you start pricing me into submission. We're all different. I just couldn't live with myself if i had that disregard. Please don't tell your son something as simplistic as the sun being the sole influence on our climate. Most eight year olds know better than that. Let him make his own decisions, hopefully he'll come to some more Earth-friendly conclusions.

It's the *rate* of change we're disputing, not whether it has ever happened before from purely natural causes.
