Only want 2 Gauges in the impreza as i have a dash top pod already with a decent stereo in it and a 7" LCD in the double din. (Which will work once i get the CARPC to drive it!!!)

Any ideas on a decent 2 gauge pilliar pod for a new age impreza??

A few questions Jake...how much is that Defi-style dashtop pod and is it for our 52mm gauges (they look like 60mm in the picture?). What's the finish like? Does it match the normal very dark grey/almost black dash finish and texture? Cheers!

I'm on the list of losers who've got to wait for our gauges to come...but anyway, I've got money sitting here waiting for a decent dashtop pod. If it can be delivered for £65 and it's the same quality as the one in your photo, that'll be great. Just need to be sure that it's not designed for 60mm gauges.

 

Also interested in the pod but to suit 60mm gauges if that is possible. I am using my own gauges.

Anybody used these pods, from the same guy who is able to supply some of the other bits we required to fit these gauges.

I think Oil pressure is more important than temp so gonna go for the Oil pressure gauge (Anyone disagree??). What connection will i need, is it from the pressure switch beneath the alternator rather than the bung above #3 or can either location be used..

Pressure is taken from the existing pressure switch location which is what the Gaugeplace adapter is for. The bung is for the oil temp sender.

I've seen on the US ebay site a complete dashboard binnacle, that exactly like the standard one that goes around the main clocks, but has a 52mm pod in each bottom corner, where there's nothing that you need to look at anyway. It looks mint, but I think it was only for the newage Imprezas.

 

I've ordered a top pod for a newage today for mine.

Will let you know of quality etc when it arrives. The chap that is selling is interested in a group buy on SN.

If enough interest I can arrange/pass his details on...

I paid £70 to my door but i'm sure it will be cheaper with a GB...

Well I've just won a dashtop centre pod on ebay today, £60 delivered, from Australia. Looks like the right finish for my MY98, so we'll see when it turns up.

 

Seen them, look good, but only for the classics that I could see....

Returning it could be a pain if you don't like!!

 

They have them for the 01 onwards models definitely. Returning them definitely could be a pain, you're right about that. I'd probably just resell it to someone else though.

 

I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank silent running for his execellent work regarding Impreza specific adaptors. Are we 100% now that those ones you linked to are the ones to go for (i.e. can I order blind before I've got my gauges?).

Also, cuprajake can you post a link or contact details for the classic wavey 3-way dash bin pod. Provided the quality is reasonable and its for 52mm gauges then I'm ready to order that too.

 

Also, I realise the gayness of this question but for those putting the gauges in a top pod what order are you putting them? I presume you'd want boost to be most readily visible but another consideration (and here is the gay part) is how much and how frequently they move. I personally would prefer some balance in the movement. I guess boost moves the most followed by oil pressure and then finally oil temperature which moves slowly and then remains still. On that basis you'd maybe want Pressure - Temp - Boost (as you look at them) so that the big movers are at the outer edges. Only problem is that pressure, which is important, is furthest from you and probably hardest to observe!

 

Saxo boy (or should I say gayness boy LOL) - I just got my sender adaptors through today. They look spot on and are both tapped for 1/8 NPT which is the universal sender/gauge thread. I've not had anything directly from the gauge seller to say what the thread is but every bit of info I've trawled off the internet about them says that they are 1/8 NPT. and unfortunately I'm one of the delayed deliveries as well so you lot will mostly get your gauges before I get mine.

cuprajake, perhaps you can check the sender threads once more? I can't remember whether you looked into that for definite or not? Cheers.

Anyway saxoboy as far as the gayness of which gauge goes where, I have mulled this one over myself. I'm used to boost being close at hand, and now I've sold off my boost gauge which was in my A-pillar corner pod, it's kind of upsetting not to have it there. So boost is definitely going in the right hand one closest to me. Having had a Clio 16v for a long time, that had as standard an oil gauge pod in the middle (shame on you Subaru for not doing the same!) with oil level, oil temp and oil pressure IIRC. Level was on the left because you only looked at it once when you started the car. I can't remember which way round the other two were, but I remember I hardly ever looked at oil pressure but oil temp was a big sign of whether the car was being overworked. As far as pressure goes, it'll be up and down the whole time, and won't really mean anything at all while driving. All you need to know is whether it's too high or too low, which can be set to give a warning flash on these dials we're getting anyway. So I reckon boost should go nearest on the right, oil temp in the middle and oil pressure furthest away on the left.

Does anyone know if you can set minimum and maximum warning flashes with these gauges?

I don't know how oil pressure works but would it not be the case that the pressure at idle would be below the minimum pressure you'd need flat out at higher revs meaning you'd trigger your lower 'alarm' when idling. This being the case you couldn't have a lower alarm meaning if you had a sudden pressure loss when flat out or cornering hard you'd have to rely on your eyes to pick it up! Is it actually a useful gauge anyway - I mean, is it not the case that even a few seconds of pressure drop would kill your engine. How the hell are you going to nice and react on time?

 

I think you may be right. TBH oil pressure is not much good apart from high and low warnings which I think can both be programmed. But I suspect that if you had the kind of catastrophic oil leak that would break your engine while caning it, it would drop to your set minimum anyway. When my crankshaft oil seal blew, I knew within 5 seconds because there were clouds of smoke everywhere. I think either you get a huge leak or nothing at all.

 

I bought some of these gauges off the same guy, arrived today. I'm not keen on the holders that came with them so have made my own dash pod,thingy. Here are a few pic's, I'm going to paint it black and see how that look's, if it does not look right then I'll get it flocked.

Remove the centre strip and then cut a piece of cardboard till it fits perfect, you will need a tin of filler to cover the gap left by the centre strip.


Fit a piece of MDF once you have marked it up and cut with jigsaw and mark up for cutting, the first one I made went wrong, the centre line was fine but marking out from the centre I ended up the the holes overlapping once cut. The holes are very close to the top and bottom edge's of the vent, make sure the cutter is central before drilling.



Cut out the holes with a 52mm hole cutter, put the middle gauge in the centre and leave 12mm either side of it.





Neally finished, bit of filler and paint/flock
