I'm not sure that's correct mate. My understanding has always been that if you feel that the service was inadequate you are legally entitled to deduct 10% from the bil (no more than that) irrespective of the group size. In doing so you must state you are refusing to pay the service charge and have deducted the amount accordingly. Presumably, you wouldn't be leaving a tip either.

PS A word to the wise: if you do this, I really don't advocate returning to said establishment, for obvious reasons!!

Service charge is compulsory if stated on the menu. if you refuse to pay it becomes a legal issue and settled by a court if anyone can be botherd to take it that far.
