Oh, and the brakes!!! Jesus, the brakes!! I have uprated pads, disks and braided hoses and they still need written warning that you'd like to slow down. They are nowhere near a match for the power. In its current state of tune I'd say for fast road driving and track driving you'd have a far quicker car spending £1500 on brakes than £5000 on the engine, etc!

I was perhaps a little spoiled with the S2000 but I don't remember the scooby's being this p*ss-poor at stopping.

Two-Words......Engine Braking!
I've never owned a car with engine braking like the scoob. The original brakes are poor, but if you know how to engine brake its not a problem, in fact i out-brake just about everything.

I'll happily take you out in the STI sometime and you can judge for yourself. It pulled my mates CTR's pants down pretty badly yesterday afternoon - flew past him! In fairness from about 80kph () upwards the civic could exercise far better damage limitation. A rolling drag from 90mph would be (besides rather academic) interesting

With regards to vtec there is no question that the turbo shove is very addictive and it makes for a car that feels a lot quicker, but in reality it's not massively so. It is however very crude and you can feel and appreciate that when you drive it having come from the S2000. The S2000 drives and feels well engineered and precise where as the Subaru feels like a saloon car with a shed-load of power. Both have appeal for different reasons.

After a blast in the twisties in the S2000 you walk away smiling at how well you navigated the car at speed from corner to corner and mentally review your performance in your head.

After a blast in the twisties in the Scooby you walk away laughing at how you clung onto the helm as the car did pretty silly things to get you to the other end alive!!

LOL at the attention it gets though. The S2000 got thumbs up from school kids and nods of appreciation from those in the know. With the scooby guys with caps at 45 degrees hang out of corsa's with mobiles to take pictures

I am of course aware that there are much quicker Scoobs than mine on the road, although I'd describe it as "pleasingly quick". At the mo it's a fun daily driver, as opposed to an out and out track car. I think an Andy F TD04 hybrid would be the way to go. I think Andy said about 320bhp was feasible.

Going out for a blast in each others cars sounds a laugh. Busy prior to Xmas, but maybe sometime after ?

Good God!!

A sensible post and from one so young - I thought Engine Braking Techniques had died out with my forefathers!

The reason I get 67,000miles out of brake pads is because I let the engine do the braking .... it's very effective, but I thought it was a skill that had disappeared - good to see some youngsters engaging in it!!

Andy, sounds like a plan - I've just been out for a lunch time drive to get to know her and by far the most impressive card it can play is the mid-range in 2nd and 3rd gears. It's proper 'put you in your seat' stuff and much more than my UK could muster over that range. I made an overtake this morning that the S2000 couldn't have dreamed of and I still had bags of time to spare!

? Its something most people don't even know exists, a good function of the car and it compensates well for ****e early WRX brakes.
It puts a smile on your face when a 911 overtakes you on the straights then wonders how you are able to brake so late.

I played around with it this morning and can't say I found the engine braking to be very significant at all.

Example: approaching a corner at the top end of 3rd gear and looking at holding 2nd through the corner and for the exit. Start braking and heel-toe down into 2nd (dropping it straight in would brake the car more but it’s jerky and unsettles the car). Revs rise up quite high and continue to brake into the corner with the engine working down, turn in, find apex, floor, smile Not sure if it’s relevant but my engine has a lightened flywheel and lightened pulleys which at a guess would lower its inertia. I’m not saying it makes no difference but it doesn’t seem to make enough to transform the cars stopping ability significantly.
