To cragger if you are still watching this thread if you go out and buy an impreza buy 1 you like whether its a JDM or UK.
I've got a 93wrx which does need touch up but what 13 year old car doesn't (try finding a decent 13 yo Mondeo as an example).
You haven't said how much you want/can spend on 1

Got my JDM STI
First impressions:
Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag!!!
OMG, the VF28 takes an age to give full pull after gear changes compared to a decat TD04. Once it's on boost this particular example would haul *** away from my MY99 but with the lag on a really tight c-class road my first instinct is that the MY99 might be faster. This is just my initial impression.
All this said though the extra grunt is noticable. At 80mph in 5th gear if I plant the throttle the whole car raises up and she pulls genuinely hard!! My 99 could never do that.
Indicators on the right! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRG!!!!!!!!

So, basically, JDM cars are for old women who can afford the time to light a pipe and slip their tartan slippers on before any real power comes in??
By that time me and my UK Impreza are just a dot on the horizon!!

i got my wrx JDM because the uk dont have a typeRA and the price. most JDM cars come with good coilovers and other we bit and bobs ( can save ya a small fortune). iff i did not want the RA it would not bother me iff it was a JDM or a UK its still a subaru at the ent off the day.
only allowed to keep there cars for 3 year in japan? . im sure its because after 3 year it goes though a big sevice and road tax policy thay have there .you pay large road tax on the car that can cost a small forture (half the cost off the car i think). cars are that cheep there with high earnings and all that thay get shot off them get a new car and have an other 3 year off driving there cheep rally cars b4 it all happen again.rant over thats a other story.
get what you want and can afford mate there all subarus and both have there pros and cons. take you time and im sure you will love it
oh and whats wrong with wearing a skirt dont knock it till ya try it few more grans off weight off the car when im in it.
come on point out the spelling

It's too early to say Andy - I think it needs remapped. I never thought I'd say it but the map is faaaaaaaaaar to aggressive. Hardly any throttle is required for full boost and lurches a lot between changes. This probably isn't helped by the lightened flywheel and pullies which no doubt reduce engine inertia.
Also, when at full boost and full throttle the slightest lift seems to cause a lot of pressure drop and the rate of acceleration drops enough for you to notice making progress a little jerky. This could just be a dump valve issue? Either way my first guess is that it needs a remap.
P.S. It feels utterly crude compared to the S2000. Brutally faster coming out of bends and down straights but 100% point and squirt! I really thought you had to be well over 350bhp and on a big turbo before you were in the realm of point-n-squirt!

I have a VF28 on my car with a front mount and the last thing it is is laggy.
Saxo boy, get the car mapped properly and it will be transformed.
My car WAS a UK turbo 2000 but its got a fully forged STI ver 5 engine now and its awesome. (360 bhp 322 ft/lbs) Although the car as been highly modified and everything is there waiting for a rotated GT30 setup.
Speaking from experience I would say that the Jap version is the better performance car. But the UK is less raw and more refined and suited to our roads.

Perhaps its because I've come from an S2000 but trust me the time between planting your foot again and anything meaningful happening seems like an age. In reality is probably about 0.5 of a second but if you mulitply that up three gear changes and in a 0-100mph run you have 1.5s where the car is doing pretty much bugger all but waiting for boost to build. I think it needs Andy F's touch

Put it like this Daz if you floored it in 1st gear and changed to 2nd at full boost and high revs without riding the clutch a fraction on the change (i.e. clutch in, grab, clutch out very quickly) then it would lurch you forward on the change (no matter how quick you ****** it) and then snap your head back when the boost comes back in. It's just too bloody aggressive and I suspect its mapping (hope its mapping)

So will you now slag off Vtec's in favour of turbos ?
If you had my car (just assume for a minute that you would buy a lardy Bug !), would you change the turbo ? As you may recall it's aleady remapped and partially decatted = 273bhp. Any thoughts ? Wouldn't want to wreck the gearbox !

Truthfully I don't know 100% what turbo is in your car. I'll assume Subaru continued to churn out the TD04 although I can't imagine that's what's in the STI PPPs at 301bhp.
I'd say that my car would be usefully quicker than yours in a straight-line and I'd imagine it would feel considerably quicker (remember this can be deceptive) but it certainly couldn't make you look silly. Where I could run into problems is trying to moderate boost in the twisties and I suspect this is where you'd have a massive advantage. It really is all or nothing in my car but then I suspect a lot of its failings are due to the way its been mapped and I think a more progressive map would create a better experience.
I'm getting used to it and driving it smoother and better all the time. I'd have to say the extra grunt - especially at the top end - is worth it over a decat TD04. However, I think a hybird TD04 running a real 300bhp would be a very interesting set up and I suspect would represent the best of both worlds. I'll happily take you out in the STI sometime and you can judge for yourself. It pulled my mates CTR's pants down pretty badly yesterday afternoon - flew past him! In fairness from about 80kph () upwards the civic could exercise far better damage limitation. A rolling drag from 90mph would be (besides rather academic) interesting
With regards to vtec there is no question that the turbo shove is very addictive and it makes for a car that feels a lot quicker, but in reality it's not massively so. It is however very crude and you can feel and appreciate that when you drive it having come from the S2000. The S2000 drives and feels well engineered and precise where as the Subaru feels like a saloon car with a shed-load of power. Both have appeal for different reasons.
After a blast in the twisties in the S2000 you walk away smiling at how well you navigated the car at speed from corner to corner and mentally review your performance in your head.
After a blast in the twisties in the Scooby you walk away laughing at how you clung onto the helm as the car did pretty silly things to get you to the other end alive!!
LOL at the attention it gets though. The S2000 got thumbs up from school kids and nods of appreciation from those in the know. With the scooby guys with caps at 45 degrees hang out of corsa's with mobiles to take pictures
