hi m8 sorry been out and only just seen the replies,
Right you will find the code for the tdo5/4 stamped on the front intake side of the turbohousing(alloy bit) its behind the heatsheild so you may have to remove this it should say something like TD05H and other no.s along side it is quite difficult to see , but you need to be sure first what turbo you have because people tend to swap and chop as td04 has same fittings as do some of the later IHI turbos, as for ecu Andy at www.enduringsolutions.co.uk can sell you a chip kit for any of the earlier ecu that (cannot be remapped) just have a read of the website first it explains it all about the extra socket subaru intended for extra map) then when you know what you want get in touch with Andy and he will burn a chip to suit your car! he also advertises on ebay just search for subaru ecu and you will find ESL there are others doing similiar chips but i have only dealt with ANDY at esl because he guarentees the work and he will instal the chip for a fee which he insures against damage to ecu, i actually kept my z4 and bought another ecu of ebay because the early ones are all the same 4 yellow connectors just they have different maps, but if you fit an ESL chip into the ebayed one you have best of both worlds if you need to return to std. and selll chipped ecu on! as i say its all in esl`s webpage www.enduringsolutions .co.uk

That sounds like good advice mate.
I will double check the turbo tonight, although I am 99% sure it's a TD04 as a mate looked for me when I was at Power Engineering. But I will double check anyway.
As for the ECU...I am going to double check what I already have as I do not know if it has been upgraded or anything.
If I do have a TD04 and I fit my Z4 ECU will I still need an extra chip?? Or will it be ok as is??

It seems to me this thread is going round in circles.....IF you have a TD04 turbo then the Z4 is not going to give you any more power infact it will probabaly have the reverse effect..but..If you have a TD05 then its an excellent upgrade....also...the Z4 doesnt come with the socket to accept the upgrade chip it needs a socket to be soldered into the ecu

TD04+z4 BAD
Just to give you a few options for this outcome either upgrade your turbo to a td05 or fit a esl ecu to your existing ecu to use with the td04.

If you fit the turbo yourself this would be the cheaper option otherwise they will both cost you about the same in price.

If you decide to stay with the td04 and fit a esl ecu you might as well sell the z4. If later on you upgrade to a td05 you only need to buy the esl chips to use with the td05 these cost less than a z4.

If you have a TD04 then you should not fit a Z4 ECU with it, its a map for a TD05 turbo.

As has ben said you have a few options.
option 1: Get a TD05 and the Z4 ECU this will then run around 260PS (257 ish BHP)
optoin 2: leave your TD04 on the car and get an ESL/scoobyecu chip made for the TD04 turbo. This will give you around 270BHP and be mapped on UK fuel.
option 3: Get the TD05 and install an ESL/scoobyecu chip made for the TD05. This should give you around 285BHP.

The cheapest option would be to get the ESL/scoobyecu chip made for a TD04, it will cost about £195 and you should just be able to plug it into your existing ECU. These chips replace the origional maps on the ECU so when you have one installed it overides whatever ECU your currently running. This will give you great spool up from the TD04 and a good deal of power.

However this is pretty much as far as you can take the TD04, so if you plan on further mods in the future then you may be better with a TD05 which with supporting mods (injectors, FMIC) and a good map can make 320+BHP.

Personally I'd just get the esl/scooby ecu for the TD04 and worry about taking it further as and when the time comes.
