I think autopilot is spot on.
Its quite strange, I think nowadays it will be the majority who wont help. I'm old fashioned I guess, I would to the best of my ability.

I intervened when some chav was slapping his girlfriend outside a bar some years ago and ended up with a two inch scar in my hand. He pulled a knife and went for my face but I managed to get my hand up first.
I think it depends on the situation - I would certainly shout to try and distract the mugger but whether or not I then interevened would depend on a number of factors (size of gang, any potential help about, etc).
