There was a purge on the A64 near York a few months back on tinted windows. 2 policemen and a woman from the VOSA pulled me over. My side windows did not comply unfortunately so I was then issued with a prohibition notice so I could not drive or even have it towed away! Faced with the choice of leaving my Scoob at the side of the A64 the kind VOSA lady said she could immediately remove the tints for me and therefore lift the prohibition. The only alternative was to have the car put on a transporter to be taken off the public road and then have the tints removed and then present the vehicle to the nearest VOSA station to be fully inspected for compliance. Choosing the lesser of two evils I gave my permission for them to be removed at the side of the road. That was the easy part, getting the adhesive off the inner glass afterwards was a really really horrible job. From some of the comments above I guess someone will say it's my own fault because the tints shouldn't have been excessive. I bought my Scoob from a garage and wasn't even aware of the tinted percentage rule. Your windscreen must allow 75% of light through and the side windows must allow at least 70%. The VOSA lady told me to contact the garage and seek compensation from them. All in all a very bad day.

There are lots of unmarked police Scoobs in Yorkshire, there's a Silver one in Easingwold a little market town just north of York.

The old saying applies here Ignorance of the law, is No excuse...!
I pulled 3 young lads out of a crashed beemer a couple of years ago, found a girl almost dead in the hedge, sadly one was dead under the car, The point to my posting was to highlight the good our police force do, and after dealing with that accident, i hold them in the highest regard... it messed me up totally and to think they face these sights on a daily basis, im sure the vosa have their reasons as regards tints...! This is my opinion, and NOT meant to offend drivers with tinted windows...!

as for compensation, if you feel that you purchased a car that was (a) unroadworthy... and (b) illegal... then you need to take legal advice..

but honestly is it worth the hassle????

happy scoobying R4chy

dazza be careful with the 25% tint as most windows are already tinted slightly so that plus your 25% may take it over the 30% threshold.

hope that helps.
Cheer's monkeyboy840, you are correct there already 5% thats why i opted for the 25% tints to make sure they hopefully stay within the limit otherwise be awaste of money

I wasn't having a winge. I'm quite happy that the tints are gone, I was just annoyed because of the time it took to get the glass back to clean when the VOSA lady had assured me that nail varnish remover would easily clean it and it didn't work.

I know ignorance isn't an excuse, which is why I posted my original message, hopefully at least if someone else didn't realise or know, they do now.

Have a nice afternoon guys.
