turned them off, whatever they are, simply can not see why they would be added to the site

I had a look round, but it holds the same appeal to me as myspace or faceparty. As I'm an old fart who is happy with the friends he has in the real world, it really doesn't seem to be the thing for me.
If I wanted to find a forum about a new hobby or interest, I'd Google it!
