Grimaldis Pizza - is that the place in greenwich village? frequented by the rich and famous??
if so, we went there a few years ago - great food and pretty cheap too. they have a stone pizza oven in the restaurant and photos all over the place of various actors/actresses who have been in there

Just back myself from NYC.
Although touristy, Carnegie Deli is worth a spin, go for pastrami on rye, and then order a cheesecake to take away, walk to central park, and eat it!!
I also ate in Ruby Foos in Times Square, which is obviously touristy, but food is good, prices reasonable and very good Sushi.
I also found a nice Indian behind Waldorf Astoria Hotel, tucked away down a side street, which I found to be top drawer. Will ask girlfriend for the name of it and post it up.
Peter Luger's is also good, was tipped the nod re that place, and must say, I found it spot on. From memory, both Carnegie and Luger's dont take credit cards though, so make sure you take plenty of cash with you!!

Peter Lugers does good porterhouse steak, but it's a bit basic - if it's a romantic meal then it's the wrong place - only go there if you're real steak worshipers.
Gramercy Tavern is my favourite in NYC - I generally eat in the bar area which is fantastic & reasonably priced, but you can't book so get there early'ish (7 or so) or you're in for a wait - early works well with jet lag too.
Los Caminos is good if you like mexican - guacamole made at your table is to die for.
If you have to eat around Times Square then Virgils is the only place thats half decent - try to avoid the area for eating.

Another steak house:
Ruth's Chris Steak House : New York, NY Steakhouse, Manhattan Steak Restaurants, Ruth's Chris Steak House
I've eaten at a few of these and have always been impressed with both food and service. Should be just in your budget too.
Last time I had porterhouse for two... my missus had her own

Time to resurrect this great thread as it's a couple of years old now and time has moved on.
Anyone got recent suggestions? I'm looking for somewhere for a quiet, romantic, meal in February.

Keen's Steak House on West 36th street is oustanding if you like red meat!
Brooklyn Diner on west 57th - the manager will be rude to you and tell you what to do, but you'll put up with all of it for the food which is outstanding diner style food. Also, when you sit in a booth, there are placques saying which famous people have sat there before.
They've also opened another one in Times Square. Only eaten there once, but it was outstanding also.
Sparks.. somewhere around 45th street on the east side. Used to be a favourite of the mafia types, and one huge mafia boss was killed in his car just outside there about 10 - 15 years ago!
For a stunning romantic meal (And score a few points with the misses!), go to either the Watersedge or River Cafe on the brooklyn side, overlooking the city at night.
Other than those (which are the main ones I try to visit whenever in New York), you can't go wrong having a good explore. One of the best things about New York is the food, and if you're there for a while, I'd recommend exploring and just trying places - espcially some of the really simple soup-kitchen style places - but not for your romatic meal, obviously.
Have fun, its a great city.
Are we proposing??

PS. Check out the dress code for waters edge and river cafe.
They're definitely the two places to go for the romantic dinner in NY, but I'm pretty sure at least one of them has a jacket and tie dress code, which I'm not really into. I think it was waters edge.

The place is callled cafe havana and its on the corner of Prince and elizabeth street. Its a bit of a secret, those in the know only hang out so keep it a secret and its full of really attractive hip young things at times but don't let that put you off. If the restaurant is full and you don't want to que they have another tiny cafe 3 doors up.
