Living and working in Glasgow it's not something I've experienced - a bit of football banter certainly but it's called rivalry. Would the average Man U supporter really want Liverpool to win the Champions League or Premiership...I doubt it very much.

The team I'm working with at the moment in Clydebank ( a fairly spit and sawdust suburb of Glasgow ) has 2 Brummies, a Geordie, a Scouser and 5 guys from various parts of Scotland. I don't sense any hostility or antipathy infact there are a couple of COSG flags about the place - it raises some back and forth leg pulling but that's all!

When I heard about this kid on the news tonight ( and a guy in Aberdeen I think ) getting assaulted for allegedly displaying pride in their national team I felt ashamed. The reason I felt ashamed is that it builds on what I feel is a false perception that "all Jocks are anti-English", I was also ashamed that people who are fellow countrymen of mine feel that it's right to display their Scottishness by kicking out against easy targets who are rightfully proud of their own country.

Despite what you might think there are no orders of the Ku Klux Klan forming in Scotland hell bent on burning the Cross of St George and effigies of David Beckham. Most of us have colleagues, family, friends and neighbours who are English.

 

Anyway they need the English taxpayers to subsidise them

ETA But we're keeping our water, millions of gallons of it and it's ours, so while you need to pee on your car to wash it, I'll be jet washing mine, then filling the garden pond after I water the garden and hose the path down

 

Snap, out of my closest pals (mums from school), more than half of them are English. For some reason West Lothian has a high percentage of English people. I can only assume it's work that brings them here. For me, the rivalry is all in good fun and I expect it's the same for your average Scottish person. There is a bad element in every society.

Not all, often freindly rivalry and some good hearted banter.

There are always a minority of sad ***** who do this sort of thing and also cowardly nutter ***** who beat up little kids for wearing what they consider to be the wrong shirt.

There is no way you can just write off this incident as a one off. This country has become more and more lawless as we can see by the violent attacks and murderous knife and gun crime that are commonplace now. You cannot bury your head in the sand over this kind of behaviour.

There is less and less of the respect for authority and discipline that are needed to live in a civilised society. This country is sliding into absolute anarchy, the police seem to be powerless or do not have the will to stop it since they are too busy filling in governmental bits of paper in an effort to achieve the useless and damaging to the job targets that this load of loonies have set for them.

This was a shameful incident and the pity is that it will all go towards ruining any kind of unity betweeen Scotland and England.
