Indeed - garden project for this year is to build a large charcoal BBQ, with griddle and smoker.

i agree.... BBQ's shoyuld only be attempted with charcoal./ Gas is cheating and takes the fun out of it. You may as well cook it in the kitchen

bbq's are probably gas in Australia because it's convenient and safe. They are hardly going to encourage thick antipodean people to mess around with charcoal near thousands of miles of tinder dry bush!

Convenient and safe it may be, but it's also souless and boring.

If you bbq on gas you are lazy, clueless oh and gay!

If your priority is good food, cooked outdoors then gas is perfect. It allows for easy set up meaning more outdoor sessions, cooking faster and safer and with more control.

If your priority is slow setup, hassle, cleaning up, burnt food and smoke then chacoal is your thing.

When i see gordon ramsey cook food without an ability to control the level of heat i will start doing likewise.

We said BBQ - not a bonfire. You can regulate the heat on mine quite easily - turn the **** on the front and the food rises higher or lower above the coals.

As for the rest, it doesn't take long to setup, I've never burnt anything on the BBQ and it tastes much better than gas and it takes about 2 seconds to tip the coals on to the compost when it's all over.

I'm not particularly religious about the charcoal / gas issue, but I do use charcoal and get very good results with no burning at all. You can control the heat by regulating the airflow.
