Pending Speeding Conviction 96 in a 60 - Advice Required.

Was the message really offensive? DONT THINK SO, lighten up.
I just think he should get what he deserves, ie a BAN. You would soon change your mind if some idiot doing 96 in a 60 crashed into you hurting you and your family. Fingers crossed.

In Israel the Police can't catch motorcycle with a laser gun!
something to do with the fact that most of the motorcycle is the wheels.
Try to dig in further maybe you will be the first guy in England to show how unaccurate these guns are.

Pazza,
Do the words 'sanctimonious git' mean anything to you? Even if you think it (and have you REALLY never exceeded the speed limit), there's no need to rub salt into the guy's wound.
He was asking for advice, remember, rather than a smug serves-you-right comment.
Oh yes, and since you're such a fine driver, please tell me why you think that you think that doing 96 mph makes you dangerous. In a straight line, dry roads, no traffic ... you haven't bothered to ask. If he was doing this in the wet, at night, tailgating someone, then I could see your point.
My friend, you seem to be to be the sort of blinkered, trilby-wearing, Avensis-driving ("ooh, it's so reliable"), middle-land-hogging idiot who has probably caused more accidents through your lack of ability than you could ever imagine.

Thanks for all the replies.
To answer some of the questions above:-
I was caught on the A59 going from Bolton Abbey to Skipton. As far as I know I was clocked on the hill (where it goes to 2 lanes for approx 200 yards) - about a mile on from the garage on the left. The Police car was hidden and I didn't know I'd been clocked until they caught up with me at the next Roundabout (a couple of miles further on). Road conditions / weather were good. There was very little traffic on the road due to the petrol strike.
I am a Systems Engineer and my work involves a lot of travelling so I am hoping to get a letter from my employer.
Thanks,
Ian.

Totting-up of points doesn't always lead to a ban. Take my brother's instance from a few years ago....
He was caught speeding (in a Montego of all things) on the A38 (dual carriageway) near Exeter, and was clocked at just over 100mph. He already had 12 points on his license (all for speeding!), but decided to represent himself at Exeter magistrates.
He pleaded that he needed to keep his licence for a new job which he had just got in Taunton. He escaped with a fine (can't remember the amount) and 15 (*fifteen*) points on his licence!
I believe that this was possibly a very exceptional case - but it proves that you don't necessarily need an expensive lawyer.
Dave.

Yes it was offensive my friend. Ian asked for advice and you responded by telling him he should be banned and have the book thrown at him. If you are saying you would not be offended by that I for one do not believe you.
If you have nothing constructive to say then say nothing. If you insist on saying it, why not come to one of our meets and we can discuss it face to face.
I may not have phrased it as eloquently as Sunil but the feeling is the same.

Was doing 33mph over the limit and got 7 day ban, 6 points and £140 fine. Hire a decent solicitor to mitigate and I reckon you might escape a ban, depending on what side of the bed the magistrate got out of. I used Andreas Serghis - reccomended by Mark Underwood. Anyway you can get Andreas on 01273 773577.

I was doing 103 on a 70mph dual carriageway (A419 Birdlip to Swindon - Cirencester Bypass) and got clocked by the dreaded laser gun.
When it goes to Court maybe in as much as 3 -4 months time, do the following:-
1 Dress smart that means suit and tie.
2 Be polite and respectful
3After they have read the charges against you they will ask you how you plead. Plead guilty naturally. They should ask you if you wish the court to take into consideration any factors with regard to your circumstances.
4 this is your opportunity to explain all the reasons why being banned from driving would bring you extraordinary hardship,eg lving in a rural area and relying totally on your vehicle for getting to shops, school run, work etc.
5 If you are a company director and people in your employ depend on your presence for their livelyhood.
6 If you depend on your driving for your living and a big ban would result in the loss of your job.
7 If you have any dependants who rely totally on you for their means of transport.
As it happened I was a sales engineer at the time of my offence and as a result I lost my job because my MD was wrongly informed that I would be banned for at least 3 months,
when it came to court I was able to truthfully say that I was travelling the whole country trying to get my consultancy business of the ground, also live in rural area , with 11 year old daughter who needs taking 4 miles to the school bus pick up point and collecting from same.
Result £40 fine and 7 day ban with no points ( had clean licence prior to this).
The guy after me was doing 101 mph on same stretch and he got 6 points, £300 fine and no ban. He requested no ban due to employees who would suffer loss of earnings due to his absence from work so he took the points. He was warned that if he repeated the offence within 12 months he faced a long ban and very large fine.
I did not have a solicitor.
Hope this all helps and best of luck.

SIMPLE FACT - WE ALL SPEED!!!!
Every day all of us speed. Pazza, next time you are following the car in front look at your speedo. I'll bet you do 45 in a 30 zone tomorrow?
I, as all of us, bought a fast car because I like to drive fast. When I speed, as I do EVERY day, whether it's 38 in a 30 or 140+ in a 70 (which is VERY!!!! rare) I make sure the situation is as safe as it can be ie. I overtake cars at 38 in a 30 but absolutely NOT at 140+ in a 70.
These speeds may sound absurd but how many Scooby owners here occasionally go over 130mph? A friend of mine did 160+ last week.
I expect some critisism over this so don't be shy.
What's the fastest anyone has driven this week? My speed is 115mph.
PS: 115mph, not a car in sight either way, long straight road, countryside and at night. Hit 115 then slowed to 80. These cars are so quick but stop even quicker.
Scotty.

45 in a 30 on my bike (Pedal Power) - I was fined £20
As for speeding it's mainly up to how the bloke with the hammer feels. We've all heard of the governments zero tollerance but hopefully these people are human too - If he treats you un-fairly wait til he finishes, following him home in his Jag and get a mate to video tape him speeding ! LOL

52 in a 30 - on a (very light) pushbike (also downhill) - huge bollocking as I was overtaking at the time!!!, but no fine or anything - shear amazement I think.

As far as I'm aware, you can escape the totting up ban if you can prove that the 6month ban will produce undue hardship, such as losing your job. A mate of mine managed to get 16 points on his licence and escaped a ban when his boss attended court with his P45. The boss simply said "if you ban him, I give him his p45". Your can only use the undue hardship plea once in any 3 year period. Not too bad as some of the points are likely to come off during that 3 year period.
I think that 50mph over the limit leads to an automatic ban, regardless of undue hardship etc.
Jerome.

Here's my 2p....
'Meeting' to 'discuss' facts means 'Start me and I'll give you a kicking'. That being the case, why now just say that.
Mellow - 80+? mph with 2-3 car lengths gap - sounds like tailgating to me. Just IMHO. ;-)
Sure, we all speed, though I very rarely do in 30/40 and probably max out at 80 on a motorway. Then again I don't drive a Scooby but a big old barge so I guess there is less incentive for me to nail it.

My recentish experience.
Clocked @ 71 in a 30 (short blast on wide industrial road which used to have 60 limit). Went to court, dressed up, no lawyer, said sorry, made no bull**** excuses + pleaded guilty.
Bench said they'd given me credit for admitting what i'd done and then slapped me with a 4 month ban + 250 fine + 55 costs.
Clerk of court reckoned i did well - was expecting 6 months ....
Oddly, gave in my licence which was returned few weeks later with no mention of any ban on it. Still just showed 9 old points (10+ yrs old). Also, told insurers and got NO loading. Good old co-op
One final thing. Paid fine with my egg card to get 1% cashback )
A VERY humbling experience all round.

About the "we all speed" statement. When it comes to 30/40/50 limits I, and a few others (very few admittedly) *don't* speed. In my case this is for three main reasons:
1. It's no "fun" anyway. Yes, I bought the Scoob 'cos I like driving fast. But in built up areas? Where's the enjoyment there? Boring roads usually. In fact the most fun is from blasting away from the queue of irate drivers behind me when the GLF sign appears!
2. Driving within the speed limits in built-up areas gives me more time to react in the event of an "incident". And no, I don't believe the simple "speed kills" argument one bit (thought up by the police to be understandable to those too stupid for anything more logical perhaps). Actually *concentrating* while driving is far more important than the speed one is driving. Many drivers don't concentrate. But back to where I started; lower speed gives me more time to react even if I *am* concentrating.
3. I don't need to worry about cameras/radar/laser etc. I can relax and concentrate on real hazards like other (speeding!) drivers.
Oh, and when I see a GLF sign and the conditions are appropriate, I drive like a complete lunatic! Which is why I have much sympathy for the original poster - he was caught in a GLF zone, far more danger is caused by those speeding in 30s/40s/50s, IMO.
Sorry to sound so soap-boxy, but I care about this issue, and somewhat resent being lumped in with the "everyone speeds" thing...
Andy
P.S. Motorways as well - why go above 80? You save seconds on journey times, and spend more time concentrating on avoiding speed traps than driving properly. Much more relaxing too. And good on fuel in a Scoob!
P.P.S. I'll shut up now.

Driving down the M50 in Dublin about 2 years ago and was late for a meeting and needed to make up some time. Was in a civic SiR V-tec showing 130mph on the clock and was clocked by a motorbike cop on the overhead bridge. As soon as I saw him I hit the brakes back down to 70mph and said **** I am soon to be and out of work Sales rep. Fortunately for me it took the cop a couple of seconds to get back on his bike and follow me, in the meantime a black Nissan Almera over takes me at about 85mph and it just happened to be the same colour as my car. Still thinking I am going to lose my job I pulled back into the over taking lane and along comes Mr Motorbike cop with lights blazing and signalling for me to pull over. as soon as I did he pisses past me and pulls up the Almera and does him for doing 130mph (in an Almera , not) when he was doing only 85. As I drove by I couldn't help but grin.

No, people post stuff on this bbs that they know is offensive and would never say in company. That does not mean that anyone needs "a good kicking".

My bacon has been saved on more than one occassion by a solicitor who specialises in SPEEDING and other Road Traffic Act offences.
It is my firm belief, that u must have a solicitor in court with u as he will do your advocasy for u and thereby u can gaurantee that nothing gets fumbled.
The guy I use will travel to any court in the country and be there representing you on the day.
At first I thought his fees were high but they included his traveling and disbursements. At my last appearance, having not long been out of a ban for 6 months (totting up and speeding) I thought I had no chance at all in escaping a ban. I was clocked on laser at 111mph on a clear road with no traffic on a 70mph dual carriageway. The result from that episode was merely 5 points, an endorsement and a fine of £275 when I should have had the book thrown at me as doing this speed usually and automatically warrants an instant ban plus fine.
Within a month of getting this medicine I got caught yet agai on a Gatso on the A303 when I was clocked at 82mph in a 60mph zone. Result should have been heavy on points plus large fine. My result was after his arguement with the magistartes was £30 and no penalty points...the 30 quid was to cover costs.
Any how he comes highly recommended and is used extensively by Porsche Club members. Give him a call and see what he says and I am confident he will do a great job for u in DAMAGE LIMITATION.
He Mr Andreas Serghis of St Aubyn's Chambers, 79 St Aubyn's, HOVE, East Sussex, BN3 2TL. Call him on 01273 773577/735248 OR his pager 01426 233833 and HE WILL CALL U BACK.
Good luck and perhaps you can persuade him to advertise on this BBS or in the club magazine.
Regards
