Like my EJ20 lump then... maybe I should have left it in, and turned the tunes up...lol
Hoping to map mine as soon as possible... just get it running first then plug the lap top in and have a play...
Has Ron said to you anything about running it in???
What sort of mileage has he told you to do before its said to be 'RUN IN'... thats the can of worms opened now... here we go...

I asked Ron about running in and he sent me a "detailed" explanation. I'll pm it too you as it'd take me forever to give you the jist.

I have to confess I'm not going to stick exactly to it as I've spoken to many people and read dozens of threads on the matter. Suffice to say it'll have roughly 1000 miles on it when its mapped. I changed the oil at 400 for a branded mineral oil and will do so again to synthetic prior to the map. As its got over 600 miles on it now I've started using some more revs and even a little boost, nothing crazy though. I think the highest I've seen is 0.4 of a bar.

It's very tempting just to turn the avcr back on and give it a blast though but until its mapped I'll try to behave.

Right... still not alot of change at the moment... Ron is still waiting on the pistons. They are finished with the machining process, but the coating is taking a little longer than expected. The crank/rods/bearings and other small things are all set for the install... He has some pics and will send them to me when he returns from his vacation on Monday the 24th... Have sent the heads away for abit of a refresh, they have been cleaned up, all the valves re-seated etc, and re-shimmed... these are due back to me next week... all in time for the engine coming back, which shouldn't be to long now...
I have been busy painting/ minting the car up... for awhile now I haven't been happy with the paintwork, there has been a few marks/ scratches on it I just haven't been able to shift by hand... to many people it looks very clean, but i'm very picky when it comes to paintwork... so I phoned a mate last week... and with the weather being abit better towards the weekend... he's managed to pop down and mop the car yesterday/ sunday...
After a 2 and a half hour mopping, followed by the rest of the day polishing and waxing the car... the final results imho are stunning... all the fine little marks have virtually gone, and you can see the metalic finish on the car really well in the sun now... Once its back on the road and running well, I plan to have the splitter, boot lid, spoiler and side skirts re-painted to perfect it... but for now, what you think???

Sorry about the pic quality... done on my phone... they don't really do the finish justice...

Have painted under the front arches again, still got to re-do the rears and carry on underneath the floor... Looking nice and clean though...

Yes it's running well, if a little lumpy. It's also a bit smelly as it's overfuelling like a mo fo. The flames coming out the back of it are ridiculous. Just wish I wasn't having to pay for all that optimax.

It's getting mapped on Wednesday so hopefully should be fine after that. Don't know if my nerves will be though, I've hit 0.5 bar a couple of times and near sh@ myself. It's going to be an absolute weapon when its done.

Quote:-The flames coming out the back of it are ridiculous... lol... I'm uming and arhing about turbo again... although the garrett hybrid Andy F does is good for 450bhp... I dunno if I should just splash out now and go for a GT30R or GT35R... Hmmmmmmmmm??? I want it reliable though... and just keep thinking of the transmission... think its gonna struggle with 450bhp plus anyway... let alone 500bhp plus...
Think the Garrett hybrid is a sensible choice... just gotta resist the temptaion...lol
Playsatan, if your down this way once re-mapped... your gonna have to take me out in yours... can't wait for mine...

Is 450bhp enough????? That's the question.

I know if I want to uprate it later then the bottom end is good for it and lets face it, a turbo swap is an afternoon with the spanners. I resigned myself to the fact that the next thing I'm buying is a gearbox and clutch so if it goes it goes.

I'm planning to have it at SSO if you're there. Just do me a favour and don't park next to mine, you'll show it right up.

Ive uprated my g/b and clutch on my 2.5 before hiking the power and the peace of mind that you have done all to prevent the box blowing up im hoping will be worth it

Question

Its more money...lol, only thing is I've already back in October brought a uprated up-pipe from Teg-sport... think it was only £130 quid, should be easy enough to sell on again, its still in the box with my equal length headers, will be keeping them... but if I was to go for any of the mentioned Garrett GT..R series... it would mean a dedicated uppipe, downpipe, & external wastegate will be needed which hikes the price up again...???
Regarding the gearbox... it's gonna need something doing to 4th and 5th gear as they wern't right anyway, so I may have a quick rebuild done... just take it easy and try get a few miles on it...
I've gotta be able to drive this everyday, seriously, don't you think 450bhp is gonna be enough? As I'd rather payout a few more quid now and make the right choice, but if I was to go for the one of the GT..R series mentioned... which one? and why...
Your running with a GT30R aint you Playsatan??? Whats gonna be the limit bhp wise on this EJ22t 2.35???

Its a hybrid gt30 so it's not rotated. It means I could keep my old up/down pipes and the wastegate is built in. It's defo the budget option but the specs suggest it should be good for roughly 500bhp (or so I'm told) and I think that was on a 2.0.

What I'm starting to realise is that I really shouldn't have set myself a power target at all. What I'm doing now, and should have done from the start, is striving for the best package for me. If its a 500bhp car so be it but it's more important that it's driveable. At the end of the day it's not a dyno queen or a drag strip/track only car, it's mainly going to be used on the road and that's where it'll have to perform.

As I've said before if I want more power then there are things I can do but I'm getting to/past the point of diminishing returns and it's time I just started to enjoy the bloody thing.

Please don't cast this post up to me in 6 months time BTW.

Cheers for the PM.... Still unsure what to go for... aleast as you've mentioned... the block is good for alot more... going for 800cc flow matched V ports, so if at a later date I wanted to upgrade the turbo... I should really just be able to get away with changing the turbo and nowt else... looking forward to having it running again... can't wait to get it run in and giving it some with the anti-lag switched on...lol

IMHO - if its your everyday car then a GT series rotated turbo is not the right choice...a bolt on upgraded turbo should be good for everyday enjoyable use....depends what you really want the car for.....everyday 10 miles to work and back and lots of drag and track days or what??? 450bhp is enough for an everyday car without question and you dont need a GT series rotated turbo to acheive that...Lateral Performance doturbos that are staright bolt on to reach that power

Think I'll stick with the The Garrett hybrid Andy F is doing... he says its a fairly new unit. Owen developments and RCMS do a similar unit. RCMS actually call it an IHI GT35 even although it is nothing like a GT35 ???

Just back from Andy's and there was some turbo talk going on. The hybrid one I fitted is flowing a lot more air than my old 20g and is at 1bar by 3.4k and 1.8bar at just over 4k. It was holding 1.8 all the way to the redline but he tailed it off to 1.6. He did comment that a garrett in it original housing (rotated) would boost even earlier and be good for maybe 30/40 more bhp. The only downside is price as you have to modify up/down pipes and intakes etc.

Only you know wether its worth it or not.

BTW, its that powerful I'm getting torque steer!

Am I the only one that thinks mid 300s is more than enough in a classic roadcar?

I would like to try a high powered 2.0ltr to see the difference in driving characteristics.

You guys are mad

Black TypeR looks seriously

If rolling roads are to be believed (considered?) in this conversation, then my 2 litre clocked 407 bhp and 380 on a 20g etc.
The car has no rubber in the suspension anywhere or in the rear diff subframe etc.

There is no squirming or otherwise, but the rate of accelleration seems severe when really pushing on a B/A road with the tyres sometime scrabbling for grip and chattering across the chassis.

I think my car is ok with this level of bhp/torque, but any more and the car driven hard would make it a bit dodgy on the public road.

But on the (hill climb) track........

Graham.

Default Rotation

So is rotation not an option, or just not good on 20g? (I know you would have already done it if the way to go?)

Yes, it all went jim dandy. Need to learn how to drive the thing yet again as it's a bit more lively that my everyday 1.6 focus. Will get it on the rollers at the next local r/r day. I asked Andy what his arsedyno reckoned it to be but he said it'd been a while since that'd been callibrated.

Slightly off-topic (perhaps completely ) - Scoobyslammed, have you a mate who's just bought a Cav Turbo?

Car looks positively gleaming. I had the choice of a mag featured black V4 Type R or the V4 RA i eventually bought. Those pics make me wonder what could've been lol. Looking forward to seeing it go back together.
