i just wanted to let you all know that yesterday was fantastic!
it was a very emotional day but a very happy one too. it was exactly how my mum wanted it to be. she loved the sun and wanted to be buried in the full sun. she got her wish and the weather was perfect. she loved animals and would have been made up knowing that there are sheep grazing in the graveyard. she is next to a cornfield which is very pretty. a bench is next to her grave as well. i am going to replace this with a new one with a plaque on in memory of my mum. the whole day went perfectly smoothly.
i got up this morning and didnt feel sad at all. i feel very positive. thanks again everyone for understanding my pain throughout the last 6 months
leslie...........i hope things go as well for you as they have for me. i dont know where i found the strength to get through this but i did, and you will too, i am thinking about you and your family
dynomix.......i remember your mum was given the same prognosis as mine, i hope she is doing well. she has a great family round her, including you. i hope you are able to keep us up to date with your mums fight. i know it will be hard for you, and i hope you can find the strengh you will need through this thread, i have...............please pass on my thoughts to your family xxx

Good to hear everything went well. It is a hard and draining day.
I just switched off and went onto auto pilot on my Dad's funeral (nearly 6months now
). But then I did have to eject a rogue "financial advisor" at the wake, and I set fire to my fish and chips when I got back home

Thanks for that Sara. I am so glad you had a good day yesterday, I hope ours goes as well. As the older child I have been elected to make the speech at the burial service. Hope I can get through that without choking up.

I can only echo the comments from others.
Not ashamed to say it choked me up with a tear or two to hear your mum had passed on, I followed the thread hoping for a miracle, willing her and you on.
Best wishes

Hi Sara,
Just wanted to tell you that My Mum was buried last week up London way.
We also had a good day with the weather and the funeral Mass and service at the grave went perfectly. I told you a while ago that she was Austrian and we played one of her favourite tunes "Edelweiss" at the grave at the end of the service. It was very moving and I spent most of the time choked up. It is a very emotional time as you said, especially when you lose someone you love so much and she was so respected for her personality and her understanding of other people. So many people attended and it was wonderful also to meet so many friends that I had not seen for years.

its just over two weeks since i lost my mum now and things are ok. i miss her terribly and keep wanting to phone her. her mobile was buried with her as my daughter was worried that she would be lonely
i dont picture my mum as she was in hospita,l now, i just see her happy and smiling face like she was on holiday.
i hope you can start to have nice memories now all the shock is over
My wife had surgery on the 7th August, which went well. A week later she was discharged because they needed the beds. 3 days later she was re-admitted to hospital with a severe wound infection and septicaemia. She was very ill. Yes you've guessed it. It was MRSA. She had to spend another 2 weeks in isolation. She is now home but still on weird antibiotics, because the infection has returned. She still has a hole in her breast - an open wound, which was 7cm deep and 4 cm across - where the abcess erupted through her skin. We are so angry with the NHS. They just don't give a damn.
Today we saw the consultant, who did the surgery. He was insistent that we complain to the Trust. He said that they used to have a rate of infection consistent with other countries, when surgical patients were kept in separate wards from medical cases. 6 months ago the management over ruled the surgical consultants and surgical cases were mixed with medical cases. The infection rate soared. We assured him we were taking legal advice. They cannot be allowed to get away with this disregard for patients safety just to meet their political targets. He said that the surgical consultants had not done a ward round for 2 days. He has had to cancel operations on cancer patients, because all the beds are taken by medical patients. That is elderly patients who are too ill for nursing homes. In Aberdeen 30% of all the beds are occupied by such patients.
This was the probable cause of Linda's infection. The day of her surgery an 85 year old woman, who was obviously seriously ill with some infection was admitted to the breast care surgical ward. Why can't they keep such patients isolated until the nature of their infection is established? There are single rooms available for such contingicies. According to the consultant these single rooms are mostly occupied by women, who are in for terminations, to spare them the embarrasment. He was livid. He obviously wants his day in court, where he has to tell the truth under oath.
We intend to pursue this as far as we can. But it is not what you want to be contending with in these circumstances.
On a brighter note the biopsy results from the tissue removed, indicate a Grade IV response to the chemotherapy. That is 100% necrosis of the tumour. They could find no trace of any cancer cells.

Charles...
I'm so sorry to hear that your wife is still suffering, but good news that they can find no cancer cells.
MRSA is horrendous. My dad caught that after having major surgery for his oral cancer. It caused no end of problems, causing wounds to reopen resulting in further surgery. He was on the antibiotics for over a year, but was finally given the all clear from the bug.
If you have the consultant behind you, go for it - in our case the consultant didn't want to know, but I took a complaint as far as I could within the hospital itself, and was pleased to see some immediate results.
Keep us updated as to how your wife gets on - my thoughts are with you both.

Thats marvelous news about your wifes recovery, but horrific about the infection and the carry on at the hospital. As l-g said, you are 'lucky' to have to consultant on your side, and it seems he obviously wants this brought out in the open.
Best of luck with both your wife's continuing recovery and with pursuing this further.

Good luck Charles as said above.
I have to go and see the specialist on 12th October for a review. From what the doctors have told me, they have the melanoma removed from my back and under my left armpit. I have had three lymph nodes out under my arm, and a local wide excision on my back.
I`ve got a scar 7 inches long on my back!!!

Thats a terrible story Charles, hope she is recovering alright now.
Hope all is well with you Anthony and delighted to hear about your mum Dynamix. It is amazing what they can do these days.
I have recently finished the Chemo at last thank goodness, my sense of taste has returned and my blood pressure is returning to normal from being very low. It willl take a few months to get over it completely they say. Got checks coming up early next month.
I know how you feel Sara, it is exactly the same for me of course.

if you have got your sense of taste back does that mean you wont be on SN anymore?
Good to hear that everyone is ok,
Had my 3 monthly checkup last week in Leeds, had a THOROUGH medical, and everything is ok for now. The specialist made my wife laugh, with me been out of shall I say the physical side of work for the past few months or so, the specialist then asked "Do you work out?" Because I asked about gaining my former self physique
My wife then preceeded to roll around on the floor in fits of laughter, she said "He doesnt even know what a Gym looks like, only the guy next door"
So back in January for checkup. So hope all goes well with me and everybody else.

Hello all. Linda and I have just got back from a 2 1/2 week stay in Cornwall. Yes, she is progressing. Hopefully the wound caused by the infection will be closed up and healed in the next few weeks. She sees the consultant again on Tuesday to review her progress, and to see when she can start radiotherapy. She has to be completely healed before they will start the radiotherapy, so that has been put back by weeks if not months.
As far as further action goes, the Trust have acknowledged receipt of our complaint. They are probably "losing" the records as we speak. We have received a copy of their Infection Control Procedures, which make interesting reading. As we suspected their procedures recommend taking wet swabs. They took dry swabs. Hence they did not detect the infection before Linda was discharged the first time. If you were cynical, you might think this was deliberate. Their procedures also emphasis the need for risk assessment. Patients who are admitted with a liklihood of carrying/having MRSA, such as patients from nursing homes, should be isolated until it is known that they are not carrying MRSA. Patients who are at greater risk than usual of contracting MRSA such as my wife, who had undergone Chemo, should also be isolated.
So on all 3 counts they have contravened their own procedures. You need to show that they have contravened written procedures, to have any chance of proving negligence.
Anyway we are awaiting a substantial response - the lawyers words - from the Trust's Complaints Officer.
