Use Optimax,it IS the best fuel at 98.6ron......
#31
Ive just re-read all the posts on this thread.
Basically no one has any "Hard evidence" that this fuel's causing a problem/creating a benefit.
Recently a number of threads have been started saying that Optimax is the danglies. Now theres a few slaggers.....
I remember threads a few months ago were slagging off BP/Texaco/Shell Super Unleaded.
The only fact i can see is that we all can't half talk a load of old BOLLOX based on zero fact and "my mate told me" type anicdotes, cant we
Dont you just love this BBS!!!

I used optimax in mine and it did run rather badly even after runningthrough 4 tanks and an ECU reset just in case.
Back to ESSO SUL which I know my car likes plus octane booster and I will wait a bit longer.
Whether or not it is TRUE 98.6 RON is another matter, but why does it have to have spo many extra bits in, I am concerned it may end up leaving deposits around the engine.
I am happy to wait until there are good things aobut it rather than a mixed response.
Michelle.
Oh and I have done A-level chemistry so no patronising me about RON just cos I am a girly

I've noticed a difference in my ERST, when i went back from Optimax to Esso SUL, it wasn't pulling as hard and its set to run 97sul. However, I only noticed the difference at the top end and pulling hard in fifth.
I filled up again with optimax this morning but still with 1/4 tank of Esso left in it. I'll see later in the week if the performance picks up a touch again.
But then again its probably all in my imagination and was due to varying ambient conditions
Paul.

I believe the fuel is not advertised as 98.6 RON. In fact it doesn't mention it's RON at all on the pump. Shell aim for an AVERAGE of 98.6 RON. (As per somone on here's phone call to Shell at the outset.)
That's why a)there will be differences in effect and
b)Why it has a brand name and is not called SUL (which is an officially recognised standard).

Jza,
"Basically no one has any "Hard evidence" that this fuel's causing a problem/creating a benefit."
So if I can significantly improve the advance on my map and increase the safety margin of detonation - what more hard evidence do you need.
Also 1.6 RON is quite a big difference. Almost the difference between SUL and NUL.

Dingy,
"Another Person mapped an engine, said the torque was less, i could have got confused with who said what"
I think you must of, cause SDB heard the same thing as me (as he was sitting between you and I when you said it)!!!!
You back peddling nobber!!!

imatrukahs,
See - that's what this BBS is all about - sharing info/knowledge, helping each other out and meeting like minded people - whatever car they own!!!
Matt
P.S. I didn't fail to spot the innuendo BTW so please don't think I'm thick
That's what i call a mass debate session!!!!!

'Call me insane but will just 1RON make any difference except in a placebo styleee? '
When SUL used to be 98RON it made a BIG difference, at least on cars that had mapped ECU's. And being as Jap cars are mapped for 102RON fuel, anything that gets nearer that has got to be worth considering?? Mind you, there are other things that it would be nice to know, like the oxygen content of the fuel and it's MON rating, which is v.important on a forced induction vehicle.

Michelle, the reason Shell claim it is so good is because it DOESN'T have all those extras that other manufacturers put in - it is a purer fuel (supposedly) and is manufactured to meet FUTURE emmission laws. If your car doesn't like Optimax, then you are doing the right thing going back to something you know/trust.

'....and here was me thinking this was a the Subaru community.
Do you think if I go to the ARSOC board I can have an intelligent conversation with Subaru drivers?'
The point here is that people are trying to share knowledge/opinions - does it really matter what car they drive?

Bill,
if you think that threads like this are about enlightened exchange of knowledge and experience then I am clearly on the wrong bulletin board. Subaru driver or not - ignorant speculation, happenstance and conjecture seem to dominate these threads.
Off to get my coat.
