I think people are expecting too much from "Next-Gen" gaming. IMO, the standards set by PC games are the benchmark, you aren't really going to see much that betters a PC game simply because the PC is an upgradable platform and will always have the better (or equal) hardware to run them on.
I like all gaming machines alike, but it annoys me that the Sony spin machine thinks it can fool the weak minded into thinking that they can produce games that surpass anything we have ever seen before. Its simply not true.

Crap - sorry fellas, but have to remember C64 came out a fair bit of time after Spectrum and thus, at that time, Vic 20 ruled... would have loved a C64 but couldn;t afford it.
What was the name of the best (cartridge game) for Vic 20 that was hard to get hold of but the greatest???? Will come to me...

The argument is though that a top end PC is £1k upwards, where as a 360's £300, no real comparison.

Dunk is saying we cant expect next gen on consoles, as they can only ever match the PC for graphics etc.
But...the console market is bigger, so developers will put more time and money into console games than PC games - PC hardware may be able to keep up, but I would think the console games will develop to next gen much quicker.

My opinion would be that they are better than the previous generation of consoles, but only as good, but not better than the best and latest PC games (for the reasons mentioned before).

Nicer looking games to me is not next-gen, hence why I think the current line up of 360 games is not next-gen. Things like adding a full realistic physics engine with completely deformable environments, rag doll physics on bodies, full decent reflectivity and utilising environments more in games to me is next gen and I don't think we are there yet.
The hardware of both the XBox 360 and (imaginary as of yet) PS3 will probably be more up to the job, but it's going to require a lot more effort on the part of the developers. Again, it's the environment and the general gameplay that'll take us to next-gen IMHO, not fancy graphics (although reflectivity falls into that so I've just contradicted myself ).

Swen6, do you have shares in Microsoft, or are you just hoping to see the PS3 fail? Given that Sony came from nowhere with the PS1, I wouldn't put it past them to put out a corker of a machine, but only time will tell on that one
I see Microsoft have just replaced the main guy in Japan due to poor sales. It would appear the home support for the PS3 hasn't been wiped out yet

Ditto Hanslow - Japan stopped getting the 360 imported for a while as the launch stock was still sitting on the shelves.
