Look at the component costs of the PS3

I know MS sell the Xbox 360 hardware at a loss but it's going to sting to loss-lead on the PS3 at those cost prices!

The marketing people at $ony have already said people wouldnt mind paying £400 for a console, and would even get a 2nd job to fund it.

Hello

That is a huge loss per console. They better have lots of games available at release date otherwise they will take ages to recoup those costs.

The Playstation 3 will lose money for at least a few years. How much and for how long is key, and recent projections from Merrill Lynch Japan suggest that the PS3 could lose a tremendous amount of money for Sony in the first few years. Merrill Lynch is projecting losses of 1.18 billion in year 1, 730 million in year 2 and 457 million in year 3. By comparison, Sony's profits in the past three years has been about 1.86 billion. If the PS3 doesn't start turning a serious profit in year 4, Sony's bank accounts could start drying up. There's no indication if these losses also anticipate the costs involved with setting up the massive infrastructure for an Xbox Live competitor, which most people think Sony will provide. If not, Sony's losses could skyrocket even more as it looks to create a brand-new online presence.

Sony could try to offset these losses by launching the PS3 with a higher price point, but anything above $500 is considered too high for wide adoption. Will consumers agree with Ken Kutaragi's assessment that you will want to work an extra job to have one? Kutaragi has even lamented that "…the PS3 can't be offered at a price that's targeted toward households."

The PS2 was £800 a machine when it was first launched and it didn't do that any harm.

Absolute tosh.

Sony play second fiddle in pretty much every department nowadays. TVs - LG, Hitachi, Panasonic have much better models for a start, AV - Denon and Yamaha any day of the week, MP3 player - I don't think I need to spell this one out for you, but I will; i p o d, PCs - i'd rather have an Apple, HP or a Dell.

The only area Sony have made any notable improvement, but they're still not top of the class, would be mobile phones.

Don't get me wrong, I reckon the PS3 will be a great machine and any competition can only be good for us, the consumer. I just wish people would stop falling for the Sony spin machine, next generation gaming is here - right now.

lol - you must be a spin junkie Pete, cause you can't seem to get enough of it

I don't have time to play all my ps2, cube, xbox, gba, ds etc games so I'm not getting a 360 until some decent games are out.

I will probably get a 360, ps3 and revolution at the same time when they are all out.

The only people who think sony are good at av stuff, tvs, dvds etc are people who know nothing about decent equipment, they buy the stuff because sony is a big name everyone has heard of and so therefore it must be the best.
And let me guess, the expert, (aka spotty teenager in dixons/comet/curry), also confirm that sony are the best tvs you can buy!!

Forget the comercial con, sony may be a big well known name but when it comes to av stuff forget it, panasonic, denon, etc is light years ahead in terms of quality.

If you really think sony is the best then you are really missing out on the better stuff. Check out a panasonic screen with a decent feed (no not scart!) and you will see a hugh difference.

Last night I suffered another 360 headache to add to an ever expanding last of gripes, I'm seriously considering selling the thing as its more trouble than its worth TBH, compared to an almost glitch free history of PS2 ownership.

Microsofts machine is substandard - yes the visuals are nice and online play is top notch but its obviously been rushed out just to get one over on Sony.

My only fear is that Sony now feel to the need to launch early rather than properly play-testing the PS3 like M$ have done.

Don't Samsung supply the panny screens.

I've got a Samsung LCD and have to say it outshines anything Sony have to offer

Split disc.

PGR3 hasnt been out of the machine for about a week so its not a mis-handling issue, there's an 1 1/2 cm crack from the centre leading out so the 360 wont read it.

Been on AV Forums and 360's damaging discs seems to be a common problem, although mainly with COD2 from what I can gather.

They scratch discs on rare occassion if you actually move the console while the disc is spinning (which is a stupid thing to do in any cd/dvd player tbh).

Never heard of a drive cracking a disc .

If it seems common on COD2 then dont you thing this would be a disc manufacturing fault or has the console got it in for COD

Console has not budged an inch since launch day.

COD2 seems to be main "victim" but I don't think any title has been spared from what I've read - there'll always been one copy worse than any other in a batch I suppose so maybe I've just been unlucky on that one - but seeing as I've done nothing wrong to damage it I'm expecting M$ to replace it - I'm not spending £50 an replacements every 3 months!

Not the first problem I've had, I had to go and buy a memory card when my profile got corrupted (no explanation why from the support idiot) so there's another £22 they owe me, and then there's the constant hangs the thing does, although thankfully they're a lot less frequent since the dashboard update.

One dissatisfied owner.

In slight contrast, I've had major problems with my 360, sent it back to MS, had to buy a memory card to backup my saves as they sent a brand new clean HDD back (preempted), but am still over the moon with the console

Their customer support although vague about the problem, were incredibly fast and helpful. If not for a slight courier problem, out of their hands, I would have had my replacement in aroud 5 working days. Pretty good turnaround for any product if you ask me.

The disc problems with COD2 must me down to disc manuafacturing not the console surely ? Could have happened with any disc.

The 360 is an incredible machine and even with the odd, rare incident its well worth the money IMO. If anyone thinks they won't get problems with the PS3 (maybe even more so) they are sadly mistaken.

Its easy to slag off the 360 saying that the PS3 will 'blow it away', it will be 'fault free', 'blah blah' but where is it ? Next gen gaming is here NOW, where are Sony ? Still at the drawing board.

Could you not format the mem card and re-download your profile from live.

You should know from the history of windows that m$ release a product followed by 300 bug fixes each week

Just to add, at the beginning my profile was corrupt and wouldnt allow me to add any credit to the account, i left a message on the xbox forum and within 10mins their support guy pm'd me with the problem and a fix, and also offered me 500 m$ points for my troubles. Can't fault the support at all.

the corruption happened before the dashboard update.

recovering a profile will wipe any saves associated with it so I had to access the 360 through my wifes gamertag and then copy them to the mem card - since the update I beleive you can copy them to another profile on the HDD.

I did lose some stuff though - neither of the Rare titles (PDZ & Kameo) would allow me to copy the save so I lost those and also my progress on Bejewelled 2's endless mode.

I tried arguing with the customer support that I should be reimbursed for the memory card but they weren't having any of it. I doubt I'll have any joy with getting a replacement copy of PGR3 either.

Dunk - you're not the first I've heard of having to return the console - my brother in law is currently on his 3rd! I read somewhere that 20% of owners had suffered the "ring of death" - I know the PS3 will have teething troubles but I very much doubt it'll be a percentage as high as that.

20% ? I really don't think thats accurate. The return rate of Xbox 360 units were well below the average of 3-5% for consumer electronics.

I had heard that on a forum, 25% of owners said that they had had the 360 freeze on them at some point, maybe this is what you'd read ? The internet is a wonderful thing, but has a habit of blowing things out of all proportion

How is it "next gen gaming now", I haven't seen anything as yet that is significantly better than Xbox/PS2.

I really wanted the 360 to be awesome, but as yet there is no evidence for me that supports that.

Maybe the next raft of games will prove me wrong, there is a WW2 flight sim thing that is looking very good next gen graphics wise.

The xbox / ps2 took 12-18months before anything decent started to immerge. The developers need time to get to grips with it.

Prey / Huxley and Gears of War are looking pretty good, should be released soon.

As for awesome, check out DOA 4 on a HD tv, looks the bollox and very realistic water effects. Just shows we should be in for some amazing games in the near future.

LOL you guys crack me up. This so much reminds me of previous console / computer wars, speccy vs c64, ps2 vs xbox, mac vs PC, Amiga vs ST, etc.

If you've bought one and like it, great! If you want to wait and see what the PS3 can offer, great!

Remember, graphics are fine, but when you are whizzing through a game, are you really paying that much attention to the graphics? Gameplay is king despite what a game looks like. Look at the emulation scene where people are playing lots of crappy old games.

From what I've read, there are development PS3s already out there so stuff is being developed at the moment. As to whether the quality control will produce anything stable and decent at release remains to be seen.

Me, I'm waiting to see what the PS3 offers. I've not been overly impressed with what the 360 offers (my opinion!) at the moment, and I may be equally unimpressed when the PS3 comes out I'll admit the (small?) number of hardware issues on the 360 is a concern, but then a pilot electronics product does have niggles, although I'd argue that the Japanese have stricter quality control

Anyway, play nice, you know you aren't going to convince anyone about anything Yes the 360 is here now, if you want one, buy one, if you don't, wait for the PS3 and or price reductions on the 360. I turned down the offer from my missus for her to buy me one for my birthday, in the end, I settled for a pre-order on Final Fantasy XII on the PS2 as I know I'll get a lot of use out of that!
