Ta for support DW. Even if you're loaded that money is better off in your pocket than sqandered on something that's a lot more expensive than the exact same thing elsewhere - just shows you're too lazy/stupid to look after your dosh!
And with 3 or 4 (or was that 17 ... I forget) 17K+ cars to look after you need all the dosh you can get ....

I was running 3 cars until recently, joint value of about £12k and the running costs were hard work, tax, MOT, etc etc

Anyway, I'm not really arguing against you, and agree that it's a good thing to save tax and other "unenjoyable expenditure" at any opportunity - I have no desire to line the chancelor's pocket any more than I am already (far too much this year with over £8k of stamp duty coming up soon ).
However, I would say that the £60 tax saving for using the Golf is only really any use if it is not more expensive to service, insure, fuel etc than the bigger engine equivalent car. I have no idea if it is or it isn't. If the total running costs are better on the 1.4 due to fuel economy, insurance and tax (which they might well be), then the car makes a lot of sense.
