I am all for innovation, it might be a blind alley like Citroen Activa's, 4WS and those Subaru thingys but we may all be driving them in ten years.

I was running 3 cars until recently, joint value of about £12k and the running costs were hard work, tax, MOT, etc etc
Unless you're running 3 or 4 of these 1.4 Golfs or other small engine cars that do the job of larger engined cars, you aren't saving that £300 (gross salary equivalent, not net cash saving, note) in lower tax. Besides which, I imagine you'd save a lot more than £300 by running only 1 or 2 cars.

Anyway, I'm not really arguing against you, and agree that it's a good thing to save tax and other "unenjoyable expenditure" at any opportunity - I have no desire to line the chancelor's pocket any more than I am already (far too much this year with over £8k of stamp duty coming up soon ).

However, I would say that the £60 tax saving for using the Golf is only really any use if it is not more expensive to service, insure, fuel etc than the bigger engine equivalent car. I have no idea if it is or it isn't. If the total running costs are better on the 1.4 due to fuel economy, insurance and tax (which they might well be), then the car makes a lot of sense.
