Ok, here we go ... the accurate answers to what you should do:-

It depends on what type of person you are, as in most things in life:-

1. If you are scared of things that go bump in the car - buy a CockLink

2. If you are stupid, in a Technical sense - you know no different - buy a CockLink

3. If you are under 20 years old - buy a CockLink, why? well kiddies like them

4. If you want to impress mummy and daddy then get a CockLink

My point was that the car is near standard and so I feel the risk is significantly lower than running in a car with an aftermarket ECU.

Mostly Not applicable Im female, 30yrs old, dont need to impress anyone and mainly just wondered if a knocklink was any good.
Yes I have very little technical knowledge of an engine and thought it may help someone like me to identify any problems so helping me not to spend a fortune in the long run.
Maybe if you were a little less forcefull with your point people may listen to you, I think I would be more inclined to see your side if you calmed down a bit and explained it politely. Thanks for your side anyway

I'm not taking anyone's side here - as I said before I can see where a Knocklink might be useful, and I can also see where it is pointless and silly. I'm not a Subaru tuner nor have any commercial interests in Subaru tuning beyond what it personally costs me. My experience comes from having driven, maintained and tuned a variety of different cars and having friends who have also done so - whether on carbs, injection, throttle bodies, nitrous, NA or turbocharged. But I still don't see a clear answer about why the Subaru engine/ECU is so crap that it blows up or needs monitoring just in case of a component failure. Subarus in general have a pretty good reputation for reliability etc - ask any farmer driving a Legacy estate on 200k. So why is it that as soon as you delve into the world of Impreza tuners or enthusiasts, you hear the most outrageous weaknesses that I've never heard of amongst owners and tuners of other marques? The first time I heard of a Knocklink was on here and I was SHOCKED that it seemed that monitoring mild knock was an acceptable part of Impreza tuning. A modern car shouldn't even show ANY knock at all, under any circumstance! Some of the things I've heard and been amazed by on SN:

Overboosted, hit the fuel cut and almost got thrown through the windscreen - because it was a COLDER THAN USUAL DAY!
Engine blew up 10 minutes after an oil change - because some fancy procedure wasn't followed!
Engine blew up at 110mph - because the ECU was 'out of parameters' and simply let the driver carry on flooring it even though the charge temp was through the roof.
Number 3 piston knackered in some way - because the engine had reached 50k miles/not enough fuel pressure/not enough oil reaching this cylinder etc etc.
'Bad batches of fuel' - I've never, in all the 15 years I've been driving, encountered a bad batch of fuel. Suddenly in the world of Imprezas, everyone's been unlucky enough to get one. Perhaps the more plausible answer is that Impreza engines are too delicate and feeble to handle normal variations in fuel quality that every other manufacturer programs the ECU to account for.

It's just disgraceful. Absolutely inexcusable. I will never get over how these apparently strong cars are just so weak. If Subaru had done a proper job in the first place, there would be no need for Knocklinks, parallel fuel rails, MAF sensors as service items (in fact come to think of it, why the hell didn't they just use a MAP sensor combined with the TPS that's already there, and do the job properly?)

My final comment regarding how crap Subaru are. Look at poor old Petter Solberg - wasn't it something like a BROKEN DRIVESHAFT that caused him a problem last weekend on the WRC? I mean come on Subaru, it's a rally, don't you think a WRC car should be able to handle a few bumps without wrecking a driveshaft? The shame of it...to be out of the points because of a broken driveshaft! It might as well be a clogged washer jet!

A Knocklink is a personal choice.

If you like 'driving' your car, have any performance mods, have an import, want some advanced warning that something could be amiss. Then it's worthwhile for peace of mind.

If you like 'driving?' your car like you're on an economy run, get 35 mpg, don't exceed 4K rpm, don't exceed 70mph, use the cheapest oil possible, have the original brake pads after 70K miles, think Subaru have done the best job possible, need to ask how to change the gearbox oil and where it should come on the dipstick, have extensive engineering background, then don't bother.

Just to stray back on topic and answer the first post I am going to briefly explain why I chose to fit a knocklink on my car.

Having taken delivery of a shiney new Impreza turbo back in September 1998 it wasn't long before I realised that I couldn't safely explore the full potential of the whole package on the road. So I took to the only safe place to do this, the track, naturally I was hooked and could see the potential for a few improovements...as the years passed I made more and more changes so that the next time I was on track I would have something different to try/learn (I tended to only go to Donington and Bedford).

Now back in those days because the changes I made to the car were relatively minor I used to pop along to a few of the Rolling Road days to see if the latest modification and made any quantifiable difference (the only real use of a RR). At one such day held at Powerstation the latest modification (a catless downpipe) had made virtually no difference and the power plot seemed spikey...not only that but Rich had to abort the run early because he could hear bad det through his det cans. This happened to be just after the time of the fuel protests, so it seemed plausible that I had a contaminated batch of fuel. Problem was I had a track day at Donington booked for the following day and I wanted to run. Discussing the problem with Rich we agreed that the most sensible course of action was to drain the tank of fuel, change the fuel filter, put in a fresh batch of fuel, conduct an ecu reset, run the car for another tankful, change the filter again, and refill. Thankfully Powerstation had a supply of Subaru fuel filters in stock so I bought two, we drained the tank, removed the old filter there and then. The fuel left in the filter that came out was black and obviously badly contaminated. The following day at Donington we changed the filter again and just for good measure I added a bottle of octane booster.

After this experience I realised that despite thinking I could hear det and pinking (I cut my teeth on simple engines with carberators and was quite used to having to make adjustments) it was clear that it wasn't so easy on a Subaru engine, particularly with a crash helmet on and while trying to negotiate Craner Curves!

Discussing this with several respected tuning companies it was clear that for my purposes some form of detination warning system for the driver was going to be a good idea...and the Knocklink fitted the bill, so I bought and fitted one for my own peace of mind. I was simple enough to install, the Bosch sensor being bolted directly to the block on a spare tapped hole beneath the intercooler very close to the standard sensor in fact, and the little processor/display box being mouted to the left of the steering wheel on the dash, so the lights were as visible as the fuel gauge. As advised the sensativity was set to maximum and left well alone.

Since fitting the box I have rarely had a 'big red', however on the occaisions that I have seen one on track it has warned me that perhaps it was time to ease off the pace and let the car cool down. On the road frequent big reds have been a signal to me to investigate further and on more than one occaision they have led me to finding another poor batch of fuel, failing fuel pressure regulator, failing fuel pump etc. In one extraordinary case my relatively standard (at the time) car showed repeated big reds, which led me to my local main dealer to have the Select Monitor plugged in to see what was going on, the car was detting as soon as it came onto any boost! This turned out to be the failed fuel pressure reg, and the ecu simply could not retard the ignition anyfurther to prevent the det.

My car has certainly not been moly coddled, it has been used hard, but only in the appropriate place, after 96k miles (5k of which has been on track!) I removed the original engine becuase I wanted something a bit more powerful, not because there were any problems.

I certainly don't regard the Knocklink as an essential modification on a lowly tuned UK car, however start playing around with ECU's etc or spend a lot of time on track and it becomes a very good idea. On an import where the stock ecu has had it's retardation perameters set around 100 octane fuel I again think it is a good idea to have one fitted, these ecus just do not have the ability to retard the ignition far enough should someone start running the car on 95 octane and have a problem.

Err, you are wrong on this i can assure you! If like me your car is programmed for Optimax, and it actually gets some pile of ****e like my car did instead, and yes i was using an Optimax pump at the time, then the ECU wont instantly manage it.
I had filled up the day before it was due to be re-mapped, and when i took it in they could not believe how ****e it was driving and asked me what i had filled up with! According to them, it would not boost, and the ECU had altered "whatever" so far it was actually driving like a car with no turbo.
So, i would think that in this case the ECU did its job properly.
BUT, on saying that, if the fuel was so ****, why was it that after an ECU reset the car ran normally and was then mapped, with the same fuel that was supposed to be ****? Now that i cannot understand.
The question remains, what the **** made the ECU change stuff?

Best ask your mapper, maybe he just turned off the knock learning

Whether thats a joke or not, i dont know, as i know nothing about cars to say either way. Thats the beauty of taking your car to a "specialist" as they can tell you anything and ppl like me have to take them at face value.

As someone who's just about to get one fitted, I thought I should add my two cents as to the reasons why:

1) I personally don't think that the std ECU is not capable of keeping a std UK car running perfectly safely under most conditions. However, like any component, it has its limitations -which have been eloquently identified by the tuners on here. Given how destructive DET is to a turbocharged engine -and the cost of fixing an engine that has suffered a melted piston etc - It seems sensible to have some form of backup to give you warning should a sensor or other component start to pack in and -for whatever reason- the ECU not pick it up/act on it.

2) I'm modifying the car, so it'll be running outside of the parameters that Subaru UK specified. Of couse, the ECU has flexibility to account for deviations from the std parameters, but the available adjustment is finite! Who's to say my mods won't take it out of that range?

3) I Have an MY99 with the well documented dodgy maf. We know that dody mafs have killed lots of Scooby engines; are we to assume that all of the owners were just ignorant, drove the cars like prats, ignored the warning signs. I think not. I would suggest that the ECU adjusted -as far as it could- for the faulty sensor and disguised the problem, untill one sustained enthusiastic prod of the loud pedal latter....

4) I intend to get my car's ECU remapped to take account of the changes in the set up, but need a little while to save the required dosh, but even when it has been remapped, MAFS can still go, as can fuel pressure regs or pumps etc...You can still get a bad batch of fuel, it's particularly important to know about this if you've had your car tuned for a certain octane rating (as many have on here).

7) Anything to give our resident troll something to poke fun at.....it's the least I can do for making me laugh so frequently.
