Knocklink

Hi All

Im new to owning an impreza and there are alot of people talking about fitting a knocklink sensor can anyone tell me what they are and what purpose its for and how they are fitted and how much they cost.

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

dynamix 10 February 2006 06:31 PM

if you look in the FAQ's you will find the answer :)

Trout 10 February 2006 06:34 PM

This is an often asked question - indeed there is a post on this page about the very same thing.

Before the abuse starts I would suggest you try SEARCH :D

There's a group buy here:

BRD are offering a deal with a good explanation too.

Welcome to S/Net BTW :)

It's a Randon Light Generator ....... it's purpose is threefold:-

1. To scare the crap out of you ... needlessly

2. To make you look good to the 13 year old girls and chavs at MacDonalds

3. To make the terrified feel somewhat more comfortable

In essence, you need to be either a wimp or a 20 year old to even consider it a good idea.

By the way .. the name for them is COCKLINK!! I will leave it to you to work out why everyone calls them THAT!! :D

PS Lewis his purpose is threefold
1. To scare the crap out of new members...needlessly
2. To make himself (grumpy old bastad) look good to all at the daycentre.
3. To make the comfortable feel somewhat terrified.

Here is a question for the so called 'cocklink' fans....
What do you do when your lights come on ?
I assume there's a red one for danger :wonder:

What next.....down to the garage for a strip down, drain the fuel

I'm interested to know.

wide 10 February 2006 07:30 PM

Get one for piece of mind, and ignore old people!!

ex-webby 10 February 2006 07:30 PM

Pete,

(As Always).... since your brain has obviously become detatched from the rest of your body, lets clear up a few things here and since you portray yourself with engineering knowledge perhaps you would like to put me straight! ;)

Have you got ANY idea or remotely know what DET is, how it can be caused and why it is so bad?

Do you also know what a "compulsive dribbler" is?

Of course..... because your Subaru manual does not refer to DET or the monitoring of, then of course it doesnt actually matter then.

Drewruberry,
Welcome to ScoobyNet and the community...... don't take the comments made to PSLEWIS as being over the top. But when you have been around a bit you will get to realise that the higher frontal lobe on Pete's head is in fact full of NOTHING and has no real purposes in life (it's alright, since the TEFAL adverts stopped, Pete was basically jobless and took refuge on here). :D

Regards,
Shaun.

Leave the old Boy alone! lol If he was scaring the crap out of new people he would be saying... Get one! and spend £40 on oil! lol

Assuming your guage is functioning correctly.....

Back off the loud pedal (so not to induce the monitored DET).

Take note of when it happened (i.e. under what load and revs) if possible.

Go and see a tuner for an expert opinion.

Shaun.

nik52wrx 10 February 2006 07:34 PM

Are we mainly talking import cars then ?

ex-webby 10 February 2006 07:36 PM

Import/UK.... makes no difference regarding the relevance of DET.

And watch the money dribble out of your pocket like an incontinent old man's wee wee.

Cocklinks were probably invented and introduced by tuners with "expert opinions"

No.....

Just people who haven't a clue...........Mr lewis is quite correct, they are a gimmick to get people down to their mappers....(usually the one's who sold it(their cocklink) too them), Damage is done to EVERY engine all the time,FACT,Having a few LEDs telling you this is bull ****!, But makes money for some..................

nik52wrx 10 February 2006 07:48 PM

I would guess then that out of the many joe averages that buy Subarus, particularly those that don't visit this forum, will never of heard of such a device.

I would guess then that 90% of Imprezas are running without knocklinks without any problems. Contrary to what a lot of people suggest on this site i don't believe every other Impreza blows up particularly newage.

As i run my car as recommended by Subaru and as it has a Subaru warranty i will take my chances and avoid the worry of watching lights lite up.

Each to their own at the end of the day.

pslewis 10 February 2006 07:52 PM

HA HA HA HA COCLINKS ...... the usual ScoobyNet bollox :D

Now, don't get me wrong, CockLink adverts are a source of income for the site - so should be treated with kiddie gloves .........

"Detonation:-

Detonation is the spontaneous combustion of the end-gas (remaining fuel/air mixture) in the chamber. It always occurs after normal combustion is initiated by the spark plug. The initial combustion at the spark plug is followed by a normal combustion burn. For some reason, likely heat and pressure, the end gas in the chamber spontaneously combusts. The key point here is that detonation occurs after you have initiated the normal combustion with the spark plug.

Pre-ignition:-

Pre-ignition is defined as the ignition of the mixture prior to the spark plug firing. Anytime something causes the mixture in the chamber to ignite prior to the spark plug event it is classified as pre-ignition"

The two are completely different and abnormal phenomenon.

The CockLink does what your Subaru Knock Sensor does, but VERY much slower!!!

The Subaru supplied device detects knock and the ECU retards the timing to a point where knock is no longer detected ..... it will then advance and probe until knock is heard and back off again. This it does many 1,000s of time a second!

A Cocklink Device lights up lights to tell you if it detects knock, you get a red light and are supposed to lift off the throttle and/or change your petrol - and your underpants probably!! This is MUCH MUCH slower than the ECU can react ............ so, you are too late - engine damaged - therefore POINTLESS!

You may ask why is it so pointless, I'll let you into a secret as to how the CockLinks are set-up .............. fix CockLink to vehicle, start engine and ADJUST, YES!!! ADJUST the device until no red light is seen!!!!

WTF????????????

Thats like fitting a Security Light to illuminate your Impreza to deter thieves, but you adjust it so that it NEVER comes on, as it shines into your bedroom window!!

Now, by all means ....... if the rustle of the leaves at night makes you run home, crying, to mummy - buy one.

If you don't scare easy don't waste your money .......

This is just my opinion and plenty of fairies on here will disagree with me ..... :D

Nik52WRX,

I dont think ANYONE in a right frame of mind would suggest they are a MUST HAVE and that they even prevent any damage, but for the sake of a few quid, many people like to know if their engine has any specific running problems relating to what these type of guages monitor.

As you say, each to there own, but for some to arrogantly say they are useless must have superior intellect to the rest of the human race. ;)

I don't need likkle lights to tell me my engine isn't running right - I WILL KNOW ITS NOT!

So, they are not a must have AND don't prevent engine damage??

I fail to see what use they have then, they may as well be connected to the stereo to give a DISCO Light Show!! :D

Pete,

Knocklink adverts are a source of income for this site???????..... like your knowledge of engines, your knowledge of that is also clearly misguided/non existant. ;)

Anyway....

I suggest you actually do a bit more reading before making a sweeping comment concerning how the ECU retards ignition etc when it picks up DET. The ECU only retards up to certain parameters, if what you state was correct then DET would never be a problem. Which I think you will find is NOT true! ;) In fact..... give me your car and I bet you I can cause the car to DET and blow it's load, before the ECU has even realised what day of the week it is! :D

WOW WOW I bet that would impress the Teenagers down at the MacDonalds!!

It does NOT impress me!!

You can make a car blow itself before the ECU has corrected the fact that you are driving like a foookin knobhead?????

Tell you what mate, you don't need a CockLink, you need a mature brain implant!!

I'm SHOCKED!!

Pete, try an experiment for me, could you please?

Find a good, solid wall and bash your head against it a few times.

Done that? Good. It may hurt a bit, but I doubt very much you've done any permanent damage.

Now, go back to the wall and bash your head against it again, and again, and again. Keep at it as long as you can. Remember, a few times didn't do any damage, so it's OK to keep doing for hours on end, right?

ex-webby 10 February 2006 08:07 PM

Pete,

How you conveniently brush over the fact that you have no idea how the ECU works, but make sweeping statements on how it does work..... your a legend! :D

When fitting a DET monitoring device, calibrating against DET CANS would be advisable for accuracy. But since your way is the only way, you must be correct! ;)

I bow to your superior knowledge. ;)

Oh, I SEE!!!

It's an analogy .......................

Well, let me see now, I THINK I would STOP when it started hurting - therefore I would STOP driving like a **** if my engine was showing signs of stress!!!

Pete,

Yet another of your out of context quotes!!! You know exactly what I meant, but since your SPECIAL ECU accounts for all DET and will sort it all out, you surely wouldnt mind me trying that experiment.
