No, it's a free world. But don't bitch when we're honest enough to tell you what NOT doing that portrays to many other motorists on the road, lol!!!

Why? Imprezas aren't overly big, and aren't especially conspicuous when owned by the sort of blokes who DO have to go shopping!!

Who's the judge of whether it's right or not though. Yes it might be slightly irrational given that they're all essentially steel boxes, but it's a very real phenomenon nonetheless. X5s are an image tool more than most cars on the road, to a large number of motorists. It's a fact of life.

They've got a car that i could buy tomorrow, but wouldn't dream of doing so, based upon its total unsuitability for what i need, and for the negative image it portrays. The subject was raised, we're telling you our side of the story, simple as. Nothing to do with getting on with lives etc etc.

Yes but your saying people who drive X5's think they own a better car than most around them looking down on your etc feeling all smug with their image, yes?
So I said, the fact that your moaning theyve got a car that they consider better than yours (or anybody else who has this opinion of X5 drivers) gives their thoughts credit....
Your giving them attention by stereotyping them anyway and according to your logic, thats what they want.

"X5s are an image tool more than most cars on the road, to a large number of motorists."
so is make up, ipods, music, clothing, hair cut, watch, the list is endless - people will often select an item for its image.
People picking an X5 do so because they like it, their social group likes it - so what if it has a negative image elsewhere.
Do you think the people on here that sticker up their scoobs think about the image they portray to others? of course not, they like it and their social group likes it.
In the kingdoom of 3 eyed people the bloke with 2 is an ugly ****.

I agree, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Good luck to them if that's what they want; i'll continue to consider them jerks when i see X5s used out of context. Everyone's happy.

I have done. They're too big and usually aren't being used for what they're intended, and they're a pure display of wealth. Do you want it in another language?

Used for what they're intended... you don't think they're intended as off-roaders do you?
Pure display of wealth... some say they're a decent means of transport too
P.S. Esperanto please.

Many others are partly this i grant you, but few are as over-sized and out of their intended sphere of use as an X5. You know that's my point here, we're just repeating it now.

They're certainly not marketed as school run or shopping cars either!!!!
Yes i'm sure they're "decent", just grossly inappropriate in the context you usually see them. Again, i think we've covered most angles of the debate now.

"They're certainly not marketed as school run or shopping cars either"
there is no such thing, on wet days when walking is daft i have taken my kid to school in a TVR, a Westfield, a Volvo, a Galaxy, an M3 roadster...the list goes on. I have never owned an X5 but assuming its got two seats it sounds perfect.
You could argue the TVR "too fast", the galaxy "too many spare seats", the M3 "too gay"......but unless you travel by some nasty east european £3k car there will allways be elements surplus to needs.

It's 4x4 capability is very useful in the snow, I know that I'd rather my wife were sitting in her X5 when taking the kids to school in the snow rather than in a Focus

Here are a few points,
X5 bears as much intended use in relation to what they're actually used for as they do a bespoilered 300bhp 4x4 rally replica.
X5 road foot print is not much bigger if at all than a exec saloon or estate car or MPV.
X5 are marketed as Sports Utility Vechiles not Off-Roaders.
X5 consume fuel and polute as much as 300bhp, chipped/tuned decat 4x4 rally replica.
The image of those driving bespoilered 300bhp 4x4 rally replica is no better than a X5. (IMO).
Cars are bought according socio-econimic groups not just image.
At the end of the day, anything more than a 1.4 shopping car/family hatch is excessive on todays roads. What would prefer to drive, a shopping trolly instead of what you already drive?

True, but Chiswick Day School is only 1/3rd of a mile down the road, which has already been gritted. In the UK, 4wd to enable a safer school run must count for what - 5 days maximum per year?
