The bigger the car the more insecure the occupant , obviously...
The bigger the car (clearly 4X4 are bigger) the fewer the individual number of car space avaliable - total capitalistic selfishness.

Nothing bigger than a push-bike within a mile of school pickups when in towns - unless its a bus .

People tend to buy cars according to their income and, high earners buy prestige cars, BMW, Mercs, Jags, Audis etc, others not blessed with such income buy mainstream cars, Fords, Vauxhalls, Hondas, Toyotas, Citron, Renault etc etc.

People buy BMW/Mercs/Audis for the same reason people buy Scoobies/Evos, its down your particular lifestyle and more importantly their EGO!!.

I've noticed with amusement that more and more of the deluded fools that trundle around in their bloated 4 x 4s are sporting huge dents in their tailgates because they have no idea how to reverse them.

This comical 'badge of incompetence' remains because, of course, their credit cards are 'maxed out' and they can't afford the enormous repair bills, or the massive hike in insurance premiums that a claim would trigger.

Not very cool at all really...

My take on the X5 is this. Given that most will never use it's off road capabilities a 5 series estate would fulfill their needs much better, as well as being cheaper and a better drive.
Therefore they bought it for the sake of what they perceive to be it's better image. That probably makes them the type of shallow, attention seeking gimps most people tend to dislike. Furthermore as the X5 actually has a terrible image it also makes them shallow and unknowledgeable to boot. All just a stereotype of course, but the facts about the X5 tend to support it.

Stickered up Scoobys aren't my cup of tea, but I've not got anything against them in particular. Bikes are in race rep colours so why not cars?

With the high tech parking systems on an X5 you really do have to be deaf and blind to crash one.
ore likely damage is caused by jealous illiterates and there is no point in repairing it becuase it will just happen again.

I think it has more to do with the attitude of the people driving them than anything else, given that I can't see the point of buying one of these vehicles if you don't need it's capabilities. I tend to find that the usual reasons for their purchase is to protect the occupants and sod everyone else which is usually demonstrated in the way they are driven - charge down the road and expect everyone else to get out of the way!

It's not just limited to X5s either.

Not sure I get that argument as just about every car on the road does more than 70 mph!!!

How very true.
I used to do installs for a lot of the footballers in Glasgow and the estate at the old Newton Mearns hospital is the only place I have seen come close.

This is exactly my take on people and their cars. I drive a BMW, doesn't make me a bad or arogant driver, I use my mirrors and indicators like everyone else!! I've worked my way through cars according to my income, started with a 1.2 Clio, numerous FWD and AWD cars and wanted to drive a RWD car and a BMW is one of the best.

At the end of the day, any car can get you from A to B, but its how you get there that counts. (and I don't mean driving around like I've stolen the car!)

You can use the acceleration and handling of your car without breaking the law. Also, you may go abroad where the speed limits are different or indeed go on the track.

Takes one to know one. I didn't think the street furniture with which these people collide was capable of feeling emotion or writing.

So? You can do similar with a 4x4 off roader... But you choose to judge, how many Imprezas have been abroad or been on a track?

There are probably a hell of a lot more Imprezas that have been tracked than soft roaders that have actually been off road.

Personally I see all these types of cars a waste of space on the roads and I hold the same opinion of them all because they drive a tank when a little Nissan Micra could do the same job... Only benefit is theyre safer in the X5 yet more likely to cause damage as they cant see over the bonnet.
And would you want to be the boy dropped off at prep school in a Hyundai Santa Fe or a Kia Sportage - a Nissan Micra would be ok as it would be taken to be the nannies car

It would be as bad as being the oldest boy in short trousers!

Not sure that acceleration or handling are particular characteristics of a 4x4 off roader? An Impreza is a normal family car with a tuned engine, which surely makes it not very different from most other cars, not sure if you are against all cars? My point is that a big 10mpg off roader is in most circumstances completely impractical for the road.

So a 20mpg Impreza isnt completely Inpractical then either?

Im against no cars, I own a 12mpg RX7. My point is your views are a little short sighted IMO

I meant as percentage of those sold in the UK. They're certainly not as common as X5s or Range Rover Sports round here.

Lots of things are impratical when you can't afford them

It's not practical for people to have a massive 6 bedroom house with only 3 people living there.
