as usual David has talked me through a load of options but i must admit i do like the sound of going 2.5 and with all the recent good comments of how well the 2.5s are going with the md321T and being a superb road car

i am very tempted with

2.5 block, rods, pistons, race bearings

heads , sti 5 cams, uprated springs & valves all polished up and flow tested

get rid of the tumblers and fit sti 8 inlet manifold

braided fuel line running in parallel

p20 housing

ppg gear set

if I was to incraese the fuel pressure of the 650's would they run 450bhp ? and would i be better of moving to a bosh fuel pump at this level

I am currently at this level 440/480 (not for long though ) and am still running the walbro 255...

terry

I would be sticking with the rcm turbo, not going to a md321t but im guessing the difference can't be huge ... or am I very wrong ?

if the turbo manifold etc wasn't so new I would be thinking about going for a twisted setup

jonjo, Neil, cheers I can scatch something of the ever increasing list

I think your RCM turbo has a lot of potential, I would stick with it.

thats the plan , You won't hear me complaining about the current setup, the fact is i am lucky it has lasted this long and after going to the pod last year tip toeing around just doing enough to beat my friends - its time for a rebuild - if we get a few horses as well its a bonus

unless Bob ( mapper) turned round and said I would be better off with another turbo - to be honest with my past experience i found it best to research, research research then take my ideas to Bob for him to rip them to bits - then come up with what I really want

one bit that did make me smile was David at API state I did need a sti inlet manifold to run my turbo due to the clearance issue with the tumbler valves - so it wasn't me being stupid with the fitting of this turbo i would have been much better off with the sti inlet ...... live and learn

Im really wishing I had the space to do this work my self

and hot off the press

******the girl friend has gave the go ahead to the new build*****

after a big talk it was decided that if we buy a house this year It will be years before i get to do something like this ever again

house is on the cards for 2008 and a new interest free card has landed on the door step

if any one has any recomendation or horror stories let me know ( in private if you wish )

I want to build an engine that will last and allow me to add a gt30 r if \ when the voices in my head get worse

the one's he had in were straight to the heads like the classics , must be off a jap car - looking at a engine he had on the bench all became clear

he also mentioned they slightly move the turbo for better clearance of the inlet

obviously i need to find a way of dealing with the tgv's , one comment was just to tie them out of the way ( much cheaper than the aps system )

has any one had the cel removed that goes along with the tgv's being removed using ecu tek... if they have I could just bin them

think there is a line in the map that can be commented out to ensure the cel doesnt crop up.

Rich - I'm sure you don't need to spend anywhere near £13k to achieve what you are looking for - and I don't mean by buying cheap crap either....

Search around for options. Find an engine builder you can trust and source components from Lateral or AS Performance. Gearbox built for you by Zen

A well built 2.5 litre with an MD321 turbo would make the most driveable and fast road car that money can buy. If you go for bigger turbo's you will lose driveability

whats driveability

remember mine is a wrx with heads that need work ( i assume ) and a gear box that needs replacing with clutch etc etc

sadly the only garage that I know from experiance I can trust is RCM after i was less than impressed by 2 other "specialists" but i am still awaiting a quote and have a feeling it will be way over the current one

-I have never used any of the guys you have mentioned but agree they seem to have 100% reputations on the web, but looking at web prices APIs don't seem far out

am I over specing the engine getting for what i need ?

full spec

2.5 block supplyed with crank
rods
Pistons
cams ( sti 5 )
race bearingss
uprated timing belt
polished heads, uprated valves and springs
pump
baffeled sump
braided fuel lines, fuel reg goodrich connectors, run in parallel
clutch ( to handle 500 ft lbs )
flywheel
ppg box ( replcing forks and bearings )
inlet manifold
all fit and supplied

it all adds up - im not sure if adding the price to the thread was a good move or not but comments like your terry make me glad i did

The Enginuity remapping program has various TGV cel fixes-including an open circuit fix, you can do this yourself from a laptop, the software is all free, you only have to buy an obd2 lead from tactrix.

The software can be found on Main Page - OpenECU

Ive been very successful remapping my own WRX with this-Mind you, you cant beat the knowledge of the people like Bob Rawle ect...Its taken me a lot of evenings/petrol to get what little knowledge i have on remapping, but it'll then be easier for me when i start to do a build like yours.

Cracking thread-youve really taken the bull by the horns now havn't you

The beauty of Zen or API is you can get the engine/trans from both so maybe deal a package with them, a one-stop shop.

I think i would ask for parts from Mark at Lateral for the engine and add new synchro's to the box/ppg build-up.

the great thing about these threads is you can look back

ow the joys of feature creep

RCM did get back to me and have done a good deal, and with allot of good advice through PMs \ emails I have decided to go with it

( a big thanks to alang )

nothing against API in the choice but as I have used RCM in the past and they have made up for the delay ... here goes all my money

not going to mention spec untill its all on paper its changed about 20 times in the last month

im hoping for over 500bhp but have to see how far budget will go

only thing i have done to mine recently is fit a few new carbon look pannels

these are the subaru ones but sourced from Scott Lowe and a much better price

main reason for the swap was I took an big chunk out of the originals with my fishing gear

PS As far as I am aware the RCM turbo and MD321 T are the same thing called a different number.

That's what l hoped - thanks for clearing that up Rich. Good Luck. l know RCM 'll do a good job, as they seem incapable of doing anything else.

sooooooooo

Things are moving along a little, new pads on the rear and some braided hoses .... nice easy job ( yes first time i ever changed pads in my life )

hoses were a pig to split but once off went back together well

RCM as expected are taking time to get round to my car and my clutch has started to slip a little so rather than miss the start of the summer I have booked the car in for a API ppg gear set and a new clutch \ flywheel

now what clutch do you think i should go for, i was thinking a single plate but watching others ( thanks Neil ) I have started to think i should go for the twin plate exedy .... would that be a bad idea ?

Im hoping with the new gear box I can get the most out of the current engine with regards santa pod etc but it will be more than capable of the new engine

cheers

looks like some one has stuffed it full of wire wool, Im guessing this is the insides trying to brake free, so i will be looking out for a new back box as well

well cars now off the drive and with API, exedy dual plate clutch and a straight cut ppg
just hope i can get on with the noise

I could get away with less but i didn't need the worry, after looking after my current 5 speed this long its time for a "no excuse" attiude when it comes to playing at the 1/4 mile and getting in on a few track days
